Chapter 80: The demon pet

She hadn’t expected two academy tutors, figures pursued by countless noble families, to come personally and bow their heads to her.

She had disliked being treated as bait, yet she also understood that in this world, the strong set the rules. Tests, temptations, and trials were commonplace.

Still, sincerity was sincerity.

A faint smile, like a blooming lotus, curved her lips as she replied. "I also apologize for my attitude yesterday."

Since they had taken this step, she had no reason to cling to resentment. Their openness earned her respect.

The moment her words fell, Miel relaxed completely, plopping back into his seat and lifting his teacup again.

"Good, good," he said cheerfully. "Now that’s settled. Miss, your tea is excellent."

Seeing how swiftly the two had switched attitudes, even changing how they addressed her in the blink of an eye, Zora couldn’t help but twitch the corner of her lips.

These two... when serious, they were frighteningly serious, and when shameless, equally so.

When she thinks of shameless... suddenly a figure appears in her head. She immediately shook her head... Nah, compared to Kael’s shamelessness... this is child’s play...

A faint smile curved her dark eyes.

"Since you like it so much," Zora said lightly, "I’ll have the kitchen prepare more tea and pastries for you to take along."

"Hahaha! You really know how to treat people!" Miel laughed heartily, utterly delighted.

Sebastian glanced at her and spoke calmly, "In one month, the academy will begin its term. Don’t be late."

Zora nodded. "I’ll be there on time."

"Good!" Miel clapped his hands. "Then we won’t disturb you anymore. Cultivate well. We’ll be waiting for you at the academy."

"Alright."

After seeing the two off, Zora noticed Nigel and Rose standing near the gates of the Prince’s residence.

Nigel’s eyes lit up when he spotted her, and he waved enthusiastically. "Miss Zora!"

She raised a brow, slightly surprised. "You’re looking for me?"

Nigel nodded. "There’s an auction at Elysia Trading Hall today. I heard there’ll be quite a few rare treasures. Rose and I were passing by, so I thought I’d ask if you’re interested."

"An auction?" Zora’s eyes flickered, and a bright smile bloomed. "Count me in."

On the Holy Mystic Continent, auctions were one of the best places for cultivators to obtain rare items. Compared to ordinary shops, the quality was far higher, though the prices were just as fierce.

What she lacked most right now was a truly suitable weapon. Ordinary swords were no longer enough, something she had already learned the hard way when her blade was shattered by the Nether Wolf King.

"The auction starts at three in the afternoon," Nigel said cheerfully. "Let’s meet directly at Elysia Trading Hall."

Zora nodded lightly. There was still time before then. She decided to return first and take a closer look at the demon beast egg she had received.

Back in her room, Zora took out the demon beast egg.

It was about twenty centimeters tall, snow-white in color, its surface covered in intricate and mysterious runes that intertwined like living threads. The seal upon it was clearly powerful.

She studied it closely, her brows gradually knitting together.

She had some understanding of beast-taming techniques, yet the seal on this egg felt entirely unfamiliar. Compared to what she remembered from her previous life, the difference was striking.

"Master," White said softly, "this seal feels unusual."

Black nodded in agreement. "The aura inside... It’s not simple. I can sense its fluctuations."

Both Black and White were spiritual beasts themselves. Though they didn’t know their exact origins, they understood one thing very clearly.

In the hierarchy of demon beasts, bloodline and rank were absolute.

Low-level beasts instinctively submitted before high-level ones.

For Black to sense something extraordinary within this egg meant only one thing.

The demon beast sealed inside was anything but ordinary.

"The royal family already considers an ordinary demon beast egg a generous reward," Zora murmured, genuine surprise flickering in her eyes. "Yet this one feels... far from ordinary. Could they really be handing out something powerful?"

To be honest, she had never placed much hope in this egg.

Truly powerful demon pets were rare even among great clans, let alone something casually bestowed as a prize. Even if such a treasure existed, it shouldn’t have fallen into her hands.

Yet reality seemed to be cheerfully slapping her expectations aside.

White tilted his head, voice thoughtful. "In my opinion, the royal family probably doesn’t know what this egg truly is. There’s a special force sealing it, masking the beast’s aura. Only beings like us can sense it."

Zora’s lips curved upward. "So... I picked up a massive bargain."

She still didn’t know what kind of demon beast lay inside, but one thing was clear. Its level was anything but low.

A demon pet’s future was determined by its bloodline and potential.

A low-level beast, no matter how carefully raised, would always hit a ceiling.

A high-level one, however, had room to grow without limits and could one day become a terrifying support in battle.

Without hesitation, Zora drew a small blade, pricked her finger, and let a drop of blood fall onto the egg.

The moment the blood touched the shell, the engraved runes flared with a dazzling golden light, so bright it made her squint.

Good thing it was daytime. Had this happened at night, the glow would have drawn all the servants’ attention.

The blood slid along the runes, and the seal began to dissolve like melting snow. When the blood stopped moving, the seal vanished entirely, sinking into the egg as if absorbed. 𝐟𝗿𝐞𝚎𝚠𝐞𝚋𝕟𝐨𝚟𝐞𝕝.𝕔𝕠𝚖

Crack.

Crack.

The sound of breaking shells echoed softly.

Zora, Black, and White leaned closer with their eyes fixed on the egg, curiosity practically spilling out of them.

Soon, a small, snow-white paw poked out first, fluffy and round.

Then the shell split wider, and a furry little head emerged.

"Master!"

A soft, milky voice rang out, filled with instinctive dependence and innocent curiosity.

Zora stared.

Then stared some more.

Her lips twitched. "This... is the powerful demon beast you were talking about?"

In front of her sat a small white creature, fluff everywhere, blinking as it looked around. At first glance, it looked no different from an ordinary pet dog. Cute, harmless, the kind that could melt hearts on sight.

Mighty? Dominating? Awe-inspiring?

Not even slightly.

Black and White were equally stunned, silently comparing this fluffy little thing to the terrifying image they had imagined. The gap was... painful.

White cautiously leaned closer, examining it from head to toe. In all his memories, no demon beast worth mentioning had ever started life looking like this.

Suddenly, Black pointed excitedly. "Master, look at its forehead!"

Zora grabbed the little beast and peered closer. Sure enough, right between its brows was a faint but unmistakable marking that shaped like a crown.

She looked at the mark. Then, at the fluffy pet. Then back at the mark.

Her expression turned complicated.

"Crown?" she muttered. "What kind of king is this? A Dog King?"

"Pfft!"

Even she couldn’t help laughing.

Black and White couldn’t help but laugh when they heard the words "Dog King." The contrast was simply too lethal.
