Reborn As Super Heiress-Chapter 1672 - 1656: Unrepentant to the End
A group of uniformed police officers walked straight into Ke Zhenyue’s office.
"Who are you, and what do you want? Do you know what this place is?"
Ke Zhenyue’s grip on his wine glass faltered, nearly dropping it. He felt a pang of panic but tried to maintain his composure, clutching the glass tightly with an angry expression as he sternly questioned them.
However, before he could finish speaking, Director He, Han Wen, Huo Sining, and others walked in, all looking at him with cold expressions.
Ke Zhenyue’s heart sank. He had an inkling that things were going poorly, but he reminded himself not to give anything away:
"Director, what on earth is going on? Why have you brought so many police here? Has something happened?"
Ke Zhenyue feigned confusion, but He Guolin was not buying it.
"Ke Zhenyue, you have been formally sued by CCTV Channel Ten, and you are under arrest. Please come with us!"
A police officer approached and handcuffed Ke Zhenyue’s wrist.
Ke Zhenyue’s demeanor changed to one of panic as he scrambled: "Why? I’m a law-abiding citizen. On what grounds are you arresting me? Director, please say something, what on earth is happening?"
He Guolin sneered, "Ke Zhenyue, even now you’re denying it? Xiao Ma and the others have found out that you cut the wire for the hanging lights in Studio 7. Why do you think we’re arresting you?"
Ke Zhenyue’s heart sank further, but he continued to feign innocence: "What wire? I didn’t cut it. You have no evidence. On what basis are you arresting me?"
He Guolin responded, "Who says we don’t have evidence? We retrieved surveillance footage. The cameras clearly recorded your actions in the ceiling area!"
"Impossible, that’s impossible! I distinctly remember shutting down the cameras in those two areas from the control room. How could you have footage..."
Ke Zhenyue’s face changed as he argued, but halfway through, he realized he’d exposed himself and wished he could bite his tongue off.
Looking up, he saw He Guolin and the others watching him with mocking smiles and eyes full of derision.
"Didn’t you say you knew nothing about the wire? Then why did you shut off the cameras in those two areas?"
"You’ve just admitted it yourself. You tricked the control room staff into leaving, shut off the cameras in the wire area, and discreetly cut the hanging light wire. Your intentions were truly malicious!"
Seeing that continuing to play dumb was pointless, Ke Zhenyue decided to drop the pretense:
"Yes, I shut off the cameras in those areas. So what? Turning off cameras isn’t illegal. What evidence do you have that I cut the wire? If you can’t prove it, I’ll sue you for defamation!"
Everyone fell silent upon hearing Ke Zhenyue’s words.
Seeing their expressions, Ke Zhenyue felt a surge of pride. He lifted his head, smirked, and said triumphantly:
"What now? Can’t produce evidence, can you? You have no proof it was me, so on what grounds are you arresting me?"
Then, he angrily shouted at the officer who handcuffed him: "Hurry up and release me! Are you trying to resort to police brutality?!"
Xiao Ma was already angered by Ke Zhenyue’s actions, and seeing him still obstinately refusing to admit it, he too was incensed:
"Director Ke, you might not know this, but Studio 7 doesn’t only have two cameras pointed at the wire. There’s a new camera in the hallway to the restroom. The placement is hidden, so most wouldn’t notice, but that camera clearly records everyone entering and leaving the ceiling area."
Xiao Ma’s words left Ke Zhenyue frozen. His arrogant expression vanished, and his face turned deathly pale.
Ke Zhenyue slowly raised his head, looking at Xiao Ma in disbelief: "What did you say?"
"Do I really need to repeat it? You know exactly what you did. Justice has long arms, and your plan wasn’t as flawless as you thought. It was full of holes that anyone could have spotted!"
He Guolin looked at Ke Zhenyue with a disappointed expression and sighed:
"I thought that after all your years in the station, you were the most stable. I even considered promoting you before I retired. But you’ve truly let me down. Just for the position of chief director, you’d go to such lengths. This wasn’t a momentary lapse; it was sheer madness!"
Realizing that everything was exposed and there was no turning back, Ke Zhenyue looked coldly at He Guolin:
"Don’t act so righteous. I don’t believe I did anything wrong. Isn’t this commonplace in the industry? Everyone looks out for themselves. You’re so eager to take me down, just to save your own skin, right?"
He Guolin hadn’t expected Ke Zhenyue to remain unrepentant. He didn’t want to waste more words on him and turned expressionlessly to the police:
"There’s nothing more to say. The evidence is conclusive. Take him away and handle things appropriately. Follow the procedure and don’t ask for leniency for him!"
Huo Sining stood by, watching as the police took Ke Zhenyue away. His venomous eyes were fixed on her, as if ready to pounce at any moment.
Huo Sining’s lips curled into a smile as she addressed the officers: "Officer, wait a moment!"
The officers turned to Huo Sining, confused.
Huo Sining’s face showed a sweet, innocent smile: "May I have a word with Director Ke?"
The officers exchanged glances and nodded, allowing Huo Sining to approach.
Huo Sining smiled as she walked forward, leaning close to Ke Zhenyue’s ear and whispered in a cold voice:
"Director Ke, did you really think you won today? If so, you’re mistaken. I’m not at a loss at all. Also, let me remind you, when it comes to being petty, you’re no match for me, Huo Sining!"
With that, Huo Sining calmly flicked her fingernail and, smiling, stepped back.
