Reborn As Noble-Chapter 1163: The Weight of a Delayed Letter ( )
Meanwhile.
Garius’s Private Room.
Garius was inside, along with Alf and Erinette.
While Garius read the report and checked paperwork, a soft knock sounded at the door.
Garius looked up from the report as Alf’s hand subtly shifted toward the hidden weapon at his side, while Erinette calmly reached for the small dagger concealed at the back of her maid dress.
Alf walked forward and opened the door slowly. A guard stood outside, saluting respectfully before extending a letter with both palms.
"Sir Alf. There is a letter sent for our King."
"Letter? From whom?" Alf looked at the guard with his usual stern expression before slowly reaching for the letter. He turned it over, checking the seal, then channeled a faint pulse of mana through his special magic butler glove to detect poison or curses.
"Mm... I will present this letter to His Majesty. Continue your duty."
"Yes, Sir." The guard saluted and left quietly before Alf closed the door.
Garius tilted his head back, rubbing his chin thoughtfully. "Letter from whom, Alf?"
Alf examined the seal carefully. "It appears to be from the Mathrias Family."
"Hmm? From Rolland?" Garius paused and put down his paperwork.
He received the letter from Alf’s hand before reaching for a small, ornate letter opener on his desk to carefully break the seal.
Garius took out the letter and noticed there were three pages of paper folded inside.
"Hmm? Weird. He never sent me this much before." Garius chuckled softly before unfolding the letter and checking the date.
"Hmm... Looks like this letter is from a week ago." He glanced up at Alf.
"Alf?"
"Yes, Your Majesty?"
"Does the Human Kingdom’s wyvern courier service still not operate?"
"According to our observations, through scouts, sky eyes, and mana satellites, it appears Kimar has commandeered all tamed wyverns for his Air Cavalry."
Garius chuckled and shook his head. "How far is he going to take this obsession with strengthening his army? Now the mail by air has been replaced by slower methods like horseback."
He glanced up at Alf and Erinette. "How much dumber can Kimar get? He’s crippling his own kingdom’s communication just to bolster his forces."
Garius took a sip of his coffee before gently placing it down, shaking his head.
"Does he not know that communication is the backbone of any kingdom’s stability? Information must flow swiftly, not just for trade, but for diplomacy, intelligence, and governance."
Alf slowly took a seat in his chair. "Yes, Your Majesty. Kimar seems to prioritize military strength over logistical efficiency."
Garius sighed, his expression thoughtful. "Using outdated methods like horseback to deliver urgent correspondence especially diplomatic letters, is reckless. Messages could be intercepted, delayed, or lost entirely."
He shook his head and began reading the first letter. His face shifted into his usual stern expression.
"Your Majesty? Is there... something concerning?" Alf asked softly, noticing the change in Garius’s demeanor.
Garius exhaled.
"It looks like, according to Rolland in this letter, the region near his borders is preparing for significant military movement." He glanced at Alf. "Tell our command center to provide a full report and visual intelligence from that border area as soon as possible."
"As you command, Your Majesty." Alf nodded and tapped his mana talkie, contacting the command center.
"What is the letter about, Your Majesty?" Erinette asked while pouring another cup of coffee for him.
"It looks like he’s requesting assistance..." Garius’s voice trailed off thoughtfully.
He glanced at Alf. "Alf?"
"Yes, Your Majesty?"
"Our nation is..." Garius traced a line on the map in his mind. "From Armand’s northern border, there are two more regions before reaching Mathrias, right?"
"It is as you say, Your Majesty," Alf confirmed.
Garius rubbed his chin with his other hand, still looking at the first letter. "This means the only possible way we could send aid is by sea."
Garius kept reading the first letter carefully, his expression growing more serious with each line.
"Alf?"
"Yes, Your Majesty?"
"Do you think it’s best if we send Marcellus or Cedric to lead the navy and our troops toward Mathrias’s territory to aid them?" Garius rested his elbow on the armrest, his cheek leaning on his knuckle.
"I know sending Javier would be perfect for this since we all know, with him, there’s almost no risk of casualties since he can use his magic inventions for everything." He smirked. "And I know he has more than 120,000 puppet knights at his command. If I’m not mistaken..." Garius paused, his smirk widening. "He has the newest ones just outside this room, right?"
Alf chuckled softly and nodded. "Yes, Your Majesty. Young Master Javier’s latest models are indeed patrolling the estate perimeter."
"But I don’t want to keep burdening him with missions like this. He’s already handling more than he should. He’s gained experience and grown into a fine leader, but..." Garius paused and chuckled softly. "He’s someone who values his freedom too much. I’d rather let him focus on his inventions and his future wives for now."
Alf smiled gently. "Your Majesty should simply do as you see fit. Your plans have never failed us once."
Garius chuckled softly and looked at Alf and Erinette. "There’s no such thing as a perfect plan by me. It’s just... luck, and having good people by my side."
Alf shook his head, still smiling. "No such thing as luck when the outcome is consistently favorable."
Garius let out a soft laugh and smiled, leaning forward to pick up the first page of the letter again. "But I doubt Javier will let me send Marcellus or Cedric, or any of his half-siblings."
Erinette smiled knowingly. "That’s true, Your Highness. Young Master Javier is... fiercely protective of his family."
Garius rested his elbow on the table, cheek on his knuckle, while looking at the letter. "I’m pretty sure he’ll be mad and insist on going himself, ignoring any command I give and replacing his brothers for that duty." He smiled faintly. "Since his priority is his family’s safety... and his future wives."
Garius’s face suddenly turned serious as he began reading the second letter.
"Your Majesty?" Alf’s tone shifted, noticing the change in Garius’s demeanor.
Erinette watched Garius closely as he continued reading, his expression hardening.
Garius slammed the letter onto the table before pinching the bridge of his nose.
"That damn Rolland!" Garius’s voice was sharp with frustration. "Why now? Why didn’t he send this sooner?"
