Reborn As Cursed Alpha's Mate-Chapter 20: The Creatures Of The Night
Chapter 20: The Creatures Of The Night
After the dinner, Siroos told his men to rest while he decided to keep the first watch.
"We will camp here for the night. At dawn, we will set out again."
His men nodded, getting up and putting out the fire. The night wasn’t cold enough for the fire to be needed.
"Come, I will escort you to the carriage." Siroos dusted his hands, removing the remaining crumbs. She had gotten up from the stone and he guided her back, remaining at a distance.
Opening the carriage door, he let her step inside. She gathered her dress at the sides and climbed into the khaki-painted vehicle which had four robust black steeds pushing it. The animals were gigantic beasts with glistening manes and well-defined bodies.
Cassandra turned to face Siroos, but before she could say anything, he quipped holding the door.
"No one will step inside your place, no one will even look at you wrong, irrespective of what you believe about us. So sleep in peace, princess." He closed the door on her bewildered face, not letting her have a last word or throw back a jibe.
Walking back to the stones they had formerly been sitting, he took his position and perched himself with his legs spread wide.
His men were preparing to sleep on the hard ground, they were tough and used to it. They didn’t need any mattresses.
"Here, unwind." Faris joined him while offering his wineskin, made out of goat’s hide.
Siroos grabbed it and began to chug it down as if it were water. His prominent Adam’s apple bobbed with every gulp. The bitter taste of the wine burnt its way down his throat.
"Did you tell her?" Faris asked as Siroos removed it from his mouth and swiped his wet lips with the back of his hand. Handing it back, he snorted.
"She has already decided to hate me without even giving me a chance. How was I supposed to tell her about the type of life she would have?" fгeewёbnoѵel_cσm
Faris patted his brother’s tensed but extremely broad shoulder bestowed his wisdom.
"You realise she can’t sense the mate bond like you do? She is not a shifter, and even being born as a mage princess, she has no magic, which makes her a fragile human. You will need to be patient and slow with her."
"She is not that fragile, didn’t you see her fight alongside me in the arena? She is just very strong-headed." Siroos’s head was still swimming from her intoxicating scent. Being in her proximity stirred every beast that lay within him and yet he knew he couldn’t touch her after what she had said.
"Well, she will need all the strength and strong-headedness if she is to survive what waits back at the pack. The truth will hurt her." Faris took a chug from the wineskin, a drop dribbled out from the side of his lips.
"If it hadn’t been for my people I wouldn’t have brought someone without their permission. I didn’t have a choice and telling her the truth would make her retaliate even further."
"Bro, she still will. Who would want the kind of life she is going to have in addition to knowing your lifestyle," Faris quipped, his eyes shining with mischief as he hinted at his tastes in women.
"Perks of being an Alpha. I never wanted a mate, knowing the kind of life she would have," he dragged in a sigh as Faris extended the wineskin to his brother again.
"Gods have it out for you. Giving you an animal spiritless, wolfless, magicless mate and then leading you to her. All I can do is wish you luck, try not to break her."
Siroos took a chug and laid the wineskin on the rough surface of the stone. Placing his hands on the back of his head, he leaned back and laid down on the grey boulder, staring wistfully at the half-moon above.
He wondered what he and his people had done wrong to incur the wrath of the gods and end up the way they had.
"She is going to get broken, one way or the other. I am sure her family has already damaged her enough and now she thinks she has been handed over to a group of barbarians." Siroos laid out the words as if they physically hurt him. He could feel the pressure of having the responsibility of someone on his shoulders.
Before Faris could answer his brother. The moon was obscured by the large leathery wings, and Siroos shot up from the stone he had been casually lying on.
Faris’s gaze shifted towards the sky as well, as they heard the flapping of wings and screeching sounds.
"What was that? I thought most of the creatures had fled from these lands," Faris’s troubled eyes wandered to his brother, who was standing on the stone with his head raised high towards the heavens and his brows pinching together in a scrutinising gaze.
The creatures circled above their heads and swiftly landed right in front of the two brothers. Siroos’s shoulders hunched, the bands of his back muscles rippled as he let out a warning growl, seeing what they were.
His men woke up bewildered hearing their Alpha’s call but stood in their steps. The moon darkened with stormy clouds as a mist of fear descended all around them, obscuring everyone’s view.
They were Erinyes, the creatures of night and vengeance who took revenge on men taking false oaths and not fulfilling them. With heads and bodies of beautiful seductive women and wings and teeth like that of a devil, black and dark like their hearts.
Their hands were nothing but sharp claws and their feet like pig’s hooves.
The men stood frozen, their hearts filled with fear seeing the furies. Only Siroos was not affected by their arrival as he readied himself to shift in case they attacked.
The front one flashed him a smile, revealing her teeth, blacker than a bottomless pit.
"Alpha of Dusartine," she spoke, her voice whispy but injecting a feeling of utter dread in their hearts. Faris shivered behind his brother. Her companions tittered, flashing their blackened teeth as well. They glistened in an unholy fashion. The allure in their voices was evil and yet fascinating.
The temperature dropped a few degrees.
"Declare your purpose for interrupting me and my men at this late hour," Siroos spoke in his Alpha tone, not at all feeling deterred by their presence.
Their leader giggled, folding her battered wings. The voice echoed ominously all around them.
"You swore an oath, Alpha. We are here to warn you to keep it. Break it and we will come to collect the debt."
