Chapter 132: Monster In The Fields

Hearing the plea of Wila’s mother, Cassandra made a promise to her. She then approached Haylia. Although she no longer spoke to the older woman, Cassandra knew this was not the time to hold grudges. They needed to work together in this difficult time.

"Vera Haylia, I need you to take up the responsibility of being in charge. I am going outside to look for Wila. He is missing," Cassandra told her mother-in-law in a dead serious tone.

Haylia, who was handling an older lady, settled her down, straightened up and gave Cassandra a horrified look.

"Luna, that’s not your job. A warrior will get to him. You can’t go out there in a storm with Sikalas on the loose."

Cassandra shook her head, rather stubbornly.

"Warriors are busy and we only have Ames here in case anything comes our way. As their Luna, it is my duty to keep everyone safe. That boy must have gotten lost in the storm, he will be scared. I am going after him."

Haylia knew the implications of this action. If anything was to happen to her, Siroos would completely lose it. He was already on the verge of diving into madness.

"Luna, listen we will send someone else. You can’t go out there alone," Lana walked over and begged her Luna.

But Cassandra’s mind was made up. She requested a cotton scarf from one of the women and wrapped it around her face and hair, leaving only her eyes open.

"Ames, get me a sword," Cassandra asked, walking over to Gamma, he had horror written in bold letters on his forehead. He made a quick glance towards Haylia, she was shaking her head with the same stunned look.

"I will go, Luna. I cannot let you walk out there amid a sandstorm with monsters on the loose," he answered, trying to dissuade her.

"You are needed here, Ames and I can handle myself. Isn’t this what the upcoming Luna Trials are about? To test the Lunas in such crunch moments. Or are they just for show? I am going and that’s final." With determination, Cassandra moved ahead while Ames reluctantly followed, giving a look to Lana and saying through the mind link.

’Tell, Alpha about it. I don’t want to lose my head.’

Lana nodded while her mouth hung open.

"Oh! Goddess, help us. Siroos is going to kill us all," Haylia ranted before busying herself with the elderly ladies.

Cassandra walked towards the weapons room with Ames on her heels. He helped her choose a sword. She held it from the hilt and swung it a few times. It sliced nicely through the air. It was light but sharp, perfect for Cassandra.

"This will do. Stay with the women, and don’t worry about me," she assured him, and he could only nod warily.

Cassandra walked out of their dwelling. The wind howled amidst the spray of sand, the sun had been blotted out and dusk seemed to have fallen.

Her heart gripped with fear, but she shoved it down, moving ahead against the strong winds, holding onto her sword with eyes squinted; she tried to look for Wila. She knew children loved playing near the Saffron fields and that’s where her mother said he had been, so she forged ahead.

Doing a quick scan of the bushes near the oasis, Luna lingered for a while but didn’t spot him there.

She fully trusted Siroos and the warriors in this regard that they would not let the monsters cross the protective barriers and boulders that lined and defined the boundaries of their lands.

"Wila?" Cassandra called out but her voice was buried in the storm. The wind blasted her with a spray of sand and she had to drag herself forward against the strong wind.

She didn’t give up and kept moving, the pendant Lotus had given her lit up, surrounding Cassandra in a protective halo. It worked against magic and monsters.

There was a small shed in the fields where cultivation tools were kept. Cassandra tried to think from Wila’s perspective. He was a smart kid; when the drums gonged, followed by the storm, he must have gotten scared and hidden himself in the shed.

That’s the place she wanted to check out first. Keeping her senses sharp, watching out for every sound Cassandra braced ahead.

The tumbleweeds flew past her as the palm trees bent over from the onslaught of wind. Cassandra pushed past the fence door of the fields and quietly entered, trying to remain steady in this howling wind. Her throat had dried up like the sand below as she dragged in breaths.

The shed had its door closed so she quietly approached and tried to open it but found it to be bolted from inside. A subtle smile crept up on her face.

Cassandra slowly knocked as the wind hurled past the shed, making howling noises.

"Wila? Are you in there? Open up," Cassandra called out and waited in anticipation. Her palm was getting sweaty against the hilt of the sword as she clutched it tightly.

The door unbolted from inside and screeched open, revealing a scared-looking Wila with his mop of hair and teary eyes.

"Luna!" He rushed to her, grabbing her from the waist and burying his face in her belly.

"Oh! Wila, I got you." Cassandra’s lips tugged in a warm smile as she hugged him back. Her heart eased that she had found him, but his next words chilled her heart; the warmth it had accumulated vanished in a blink.

"There is a monster here," he whimpered, his hands tightly clutching the sides of Cassandra’s dress.

"It’s going to be fine. Your Luna will fight the monster and will rescue you." She rubbed her hand on Wila’s back and provided assurance. As Cassandra turned to guide Wila back towards their dwelling she froze in her steps. Her head elevated as she stared into the yellow eyes of at least 30 feet high monster jetting silently out of the ground. Its skin leathery brown and mouth like a suction as it stared down at Cassandra and Wila, casting a dark shadow.

This one was much larger than the one the warriors had hunted who was male, this was a female. They had emerged because the female was supposed to lay eggs in soft ground with less sandy soil. The Saffron fields were a perfect breeding ground.

So the male stayed behind, distracting the male warriors while the female sneaked past and arrived at the fields. Wila had seen it emerging before and hidden himself in the shed as she prepared the spot to lay her eggs. But here she came face to face with the Luna of this land.

The halo around Cassandra glowed like a purple beacon, enveloping her and Wila as well.

She had never seen such a huge monster before; her hand with the sword violently shook as Wila gripped her clothes even tighter and whimpered.

"Close your eyes," she murmured to Wila, trying to keep her voice from trembling and slowly pulled Wila behind her, hiding him away.

She raised the sword towards the monster and boldly declared.

"I won’t go down without a fight."
