Chapter 266: The Mechanic deep in the Wasteland [1]

16th August, Year 714 A.G.

Western Biome, the fringe of the Wastes just outside Community G.

Rustle! Rustle!

The sound of the wind blowing through the wasteland reverberated, carrying a faint metallic whistling sound with it.

Across miles, apart from the wilderness and the occasional scrapyard spread across its expanse, the only person here was a certain mechanic.

The mechanic lounged against his bike as if the wasteland were a familiar old friend, like he’d lived here all his life.

The Karaki CT-3X was different from before.

Compared to before, it looked sleeker and slimmer, but don’t let its current appearance fool you. Having been worked on and modified by a D Rank Field Engineer, it was stronger, faster, more robust, and rugged than ever before.

Leon looked at his wristwatch to confirm the time as he waited for his package.

[03:17pm]

"They’re already 5 minutes late," He clicked his tongue.

’In sci-fi movies, this is where the protagonist should be smoking a pipe while waiting for his cargo right?’ He thought idly. ’Dammit, am I losing aura?’

Just like months ago when he just awakened in this world, the world remained the same as it stayed trapped in a state of perpetual evening.

Neon storms rumbled in the sky, obscuring the glow of a distant sun as with his sunshades on, Leon observed the storms in an idle manner, comparing it with what he saw during his last Trial.

At this moment, he was dressed in black scavenger clothes with a hood hiding his features, black gloves and dark sunshades.

And then it came.

WHOOSH!

The sound came like a knife through the sky as a shriek of compressed air tore overhead, so fast it seemed to arrive before its echo.

’Finally,’ Leon thought as he looked up just in time to catch a blur of metal streaking across the storm-filled sky.

It was a high-speed jet and as it approached, it ripped the cloud and storm-filled sky open.

The thunder followed a heartbeat later, rolling outward through the sky and bouncing off distant ruins, reverberating through the ground and into his chest.

Leon felt his bones vibrate.

And then something detached from the jet’s belly as it passed- an airdrop.

The airdrop fell clean and controlled, its guidance fins twitching as it cut through the air, landing just a few meters away from him.

Boom!

A soft detonation bloomed near the ground as retro-thrusters fired, enabling the huge metallic crate to settle into the dust with a heavy, satisfying thud.

Leon finally moved as he pushed off the superbike while dusting his black gloves, his boots crunching as he crossed the dry ground.

As he moved, he noticed the high-speed jet suddenly shoot fireworks into the sky as if it was greeting him, making him wave at it. "Yeah, bye bye". He muttered with a chuckle as he approached the cargo crate.

He keyed the crate open and scanned the seals, confirming that everything was intact. "Sweet," he grinned beneath his hood.

Less than 2 minutes later, the cargo was lashed tight to the modified Karaki CT-3X superbike’s reinforced rear frame.

Leon double-checked that the strap was tight, then he climbed the bike and powered it as the engine growled to life like some primordial beast.

VROOM!

Having changed the engine of the superbike, its sound was truly intimidating now but it sounded like music to Leon’s ears.

Hearing it, he grinned and dragged the accelerator as the superbike quickly disappeared into the distant wasteland away from Community G.

’It’s time for more work’. He thought.

...

Leon arrived after just 15 minutes.

"Davis, is the coast clear?"

DING!

A virtual projection of a tiny cute robot instantly floated in front of him. "Welcome back master, the coast is clear".

Since he started ordering goods requiring airdrops from Leviathan Quay, to protect his shelter and hide it’s coordinates from the spying eyes of the world, Leon always went through this lengthy process to retrieve his goods.

Besides, there were over 50 invisible C-5 drones quietly hovering in different strategic locations around his shelter.

They were Davis’s eyes and also his eyes.

With Community G already turned into an outpost of the Freegrid Collective, Leon no longer found it hard to create invisible C-5 drones as anytime he needed a NetRunner service, all he needed was to go to the Wastes community.

With the coast clear, he finally drove the Karaki CT-3X towards the center of the shelter. The staircase entrance was no longer his shelter’s only entrance.

Now, he had a second entrance where he could directly drive into.

As he drove forward, from the top of the shelter, a driveway suddenly unfolded downward as if leading to a buried underground city.

Leon drove inside.

Compared to a few months ago, once again his shelter experienced tremendous architectural changes.

With his new skills as a D Rank Field Engineer, and his vast all-encompassing knowledge as a Warmachine Specialist, Leon finally had everything he needed to truly turn the ancient Space-X facility into a true Mechanist’s abode.

And within the past 2 weeks, he did just that.

After completing the impossible Trial and helping Ren Nora become the ’Glitch’, he woke up and found himself on 3rd August.

Just like he feared, the 13 days that he spent in the Trial were the same 13 days that his body spent alone in the shelter in reality.

Leon woke up to intense hunger that made him rush to Community G.

When he woke up, he looked thin and extremely dehydrated. Only after having a feast at Mary and Gary’s restaurant did he recover.

After that, he took a day to rest and after that, well, work started.

With his current wealth and his ties to the Geneforge Clans, Julian simply made a call to Lieutenant Johnmark and that was all he needed to arrange airdrop deliveries that would be sent directly to him here in the Wastes.

Since completing his Trial and becoming a D Rank Field Mechanist, today made it exactly 2 weeks.

In this time, he already did a lot of work in his shelter.

The shelter itself was one of his best work so far.

DING!
