Reborn as a Landlord-Chapter 944 - 482: Higher and Higher_2
Later, Old Jin helped out Lian Manman’s family a few times, and Lian Manman’s family reciprocated in turn. For instance, sweet potatoes and corn seeds – Old Jin shared in receiving them.
Thus, although Lian Shouxin and Lady Zhang were still wary of Old Jin’s background, the two families maintained a friendly relationship in the village.
When Old Jin spoke, Lian Shouxin was noticeably more enthusiastic compared to how he treated others.
Lady Zhang, Lian Manman, and Xiao Qi followed Lian Shouxin to the edge of the field. Lian Manman and Xiao Qi brought buckets to give Little Yellow Ox water. The family had acquired two robust green mules, but Xiao Qi still cherished his Little Yellow Ox the most. Over the year, Little Yellow Ox had grown from a young ox into a "young adult" ox.
"Those plots of land, let their brothers and a few others take care of that. My son and I just take a stroll," Old Jin waved his hand and smiled. "Wheat—it’s good stuff. I’ve gone down south, and the areas there that grow wheat aren’t much different from ours here. Our land can definitely grow wheat."
"This is something that, for generations, nobody thought of doing. Old Fourth brother, you’re setting the trend again," Old Jin laughed heartily. "Where did you find these wheat seeds?"
"Their family took a trip to Taicang and brought them back from there," Lian Shouxin replied.
"Good, good. These wheat seeds aren’t something you can buy around here. If anyone wants to plant now, they’re already too late for the season," Old Jin said, sounding somewhat regretful.
"Let’s wait until the new year and see how ours turn out. If we plant successfully, then the surrounding fields could all grow wheat," Lian Shouxin said.
"Old Fourth brother, you’re straightforward and have a good heart," Old Jin remarked.
As they chatted, others came over and began asking questions.
During these times, formal education wasn’t widespread, so people’s thinking was relatively simple and largely based on established habits. But once someone took the lead, many others would follow and emulate them.
Like millet, wheat was relatively challenging to manage. Still, plenty of families grew millet. Wheat, however, could be milled into fine flour – a luxury staple for the family, bringing an improved quality of life. On the market, it could fetch even better prices.
Lian Manman could foresee that once everyone witnessed her family’s harvest of golden wheat, smelled the fragrant flour, and saw the profits, there would certainly be a wave of people planting wheat next year.
Another opportunity to sell wheat seeds for a profit, Lian Manman clenched her fist. 𝐟𝕣𝗲𝕖𝕨𝗲𝐛𝗻𝗼𝐯𝗲𝚕.𝗰𝚘𝐦
Xi Bao glanced around and walked over to Lian Manman and Xiao Qi. He deliberately paced back and forth in front of Lian Manman, but she simply continued brushing Little Yellow Ox’s coat, seemingly unaware of him.
"Young oxen who worked hard in the fields shouldn’t drink water in a rush," Xi Bao said with a practiced air. "Even if they do drink, it should be done slowly."
While speaking, Xi Bao grabbed a handful of grass to place in the bucket. Yet, upon looking down, he realized the surface of the water was already covered with grass.
"Ahem," Xi Bao coughed awkwardly twice, his big eyes darting deliberately from left to right.
"Thank you, Brother Xi Bao, I understand now," Xiao Qi noticed Xi Bao’s embarrassment and kindly offered him an exit.
Xi Bao was the kind of person who, once given a step, could build himself an entire staircase complete with a landing platform.
"Manman, your family even has long-term workers now, so why are you still coming to the fields yourself?" Xi Bao struck up a conversation with Lian Manman. "Look at my family—both my dad and mom always said that if we had a little daughter, she would be treated like a treasure and spared from heavy labor. My sisters-in-law never have to work in the fields."
"I work in the fields because I want to. If I didn’t, no one would force me," Lian Manman finally turned her head to look at Xi Bao and replied.
Xi Bao was wearing a light blue cotton jacket today, his neck adorned with a flashy golden necklace of the same shade as his trousers. He hadn’t tied up his pants cuffs, suggesting he hadn’t come to the fields intending to work.
As the wind blew, it lifted Xi Bao’s loosened collar, and Lian Manman caught a glimpse of an intricately embroidered bellyband underneath his clothes. From just that glance, she could determine that the embroidery was even more elaborate than the one Lady Zhang had made for Xiao Qi.
Xi Bao, noticing Lian Manman observing him, seemed to sparkle even more in his wide-eyed excitement.
"Xi Bao, how did you suddenly become so talkative? You weren’t like this before," Lian Manman remarked unexpectedly.
"Huh?" Xi Bao froze in place, "I..."
Lian Manman walked back home with Xiao Qi and Lady Zhang, leaving Xi Bao standing by the edge of the wheat field. He stared at the ground, absentmindedly kicking at the tender shoots of wheel millet sprouting on the surface.
"...Fourth Brother tricked me, saying I had to be talkative to win over girls..."
...
They had brought back a hundred pounds of wheat seeds from Taicang, enough to plant nearly ten acres of wheat. Once the wheat planting was completed, Lian Shouxin hired several short-term workers to sow the remaining ten acres of high-grade farmland with peanuts. Meanwhile, beneath Nanshan Mountain, another thirty acres were planted with sorghum, millet, and various beans and other grains.
After completing the fifty acres of farmland under Nanshan, they moved on to tackle the one hundred thirty-nine acres of land located behind the northern houses in Zhao Family Village.
These over one hundred acres, aside from preserving portions near the edges for future sweet potato cultivation, were all planted with corn. Many in Zhao Family Village got their corn seeds from Lian Manman’s family and planted them nearby. They also followed Lian Manman’s family’s example of reserving land near the edges for sweet potatoes.
The arrangement of dozens of nearby acres ended up even more orderly than the initial plans had envisioned.
With the crops all planted, Lian Manman’s gaze shifted to the several dozen acres of mountain land.
