Lian Lanlan’s expression changed slightly. She hesitated for a moment before agreeing and getting out of bed to leave.
Lian Manman glanced at Lian Jizu again.
"Jizu, it’s getting dark outside. Go with your Aunt Lanlan and give her a hand," Lady Zhou then said to Lian Jizu.
Lian Jizu responded verbally but didn’t move his body.
"Brother Jizu, didn’t you hear what Grandma said?" Lian Manman addressed Lian Jizu.
Lian Jizu looked around, feeling reluctant, but he had no choice and followed Lian Lanlan outside.
"Grandma, going back to Taicang will be pointless even if you bring more people. We won’t be able to help; it will only make things worse and more rigid," Lian Manman finally spoke to Lady Zhou after sending both Lian Lanlan and Lian Jizu out.
Lady Zhou didn’t reply and gave Lian Manman a skeptical look.
Lian Manman smiled faintly.
The fact that Lady Zhou cooperated by sending away Lian Lanlan and Lian Jizu showed that she understood in her heart who could be relied upon and who couldn’t. Since Lady Zhou understood this, after a few days of cooling off and reflecting, it was likely that she had figured out the situation in Taicang by now.
"Grandma, tell me, when you go back to Taicang, what kind of outcome do you want?" Lian Manman asked Lady Zhou.
"What other outcome could I want?" Lady Zhou pointed at Lian Shouli and Lian Shouxin and said, "Just look at the two of you—both of your ages—and you still want a stepmother?!"
"Well, does my eldest uncle and second uncle want one? What about my eldest aunt and second aunt?" Lian Manman immediately rebutted.
Lady Zhou’s eyes turned slightly as if she had thought of something.
"Grandma, you can think about this matter slowly when you get back to Taicang," Lian Manman said. "Grandma, if you follow my suggestion, the first thing you must do when you return to Taicang is not to quarrel with Grandpa."
Lady Zhou opened her mouth, wanting to speak.
"Even if there is a quarrel, it has to happen after we drive outsiders away. Family matters should stay within the family; there’s no need to let others take advantage of the situation, right?" Lian Manman quickly continued.
"Driving her away? That’s not so easy!" Lady Zhou responded. Her agreement with Lian Manman’s argument was evident, yet her worry remained—the difficulty of driving Aunt Ping out once she returned.
"Grandma, driving her away is easy—it’s just a matter of your word," Lian Manman said. "If she’s still working in the kitchen, just pay her wages and send her away immediately. If she’s no longer working in the kitchen, then she’s even more under your control. Telling her to leave is just your word."
"Grandma, you’re the elder lady in Taicang. This matter doesn’t need to cause you any distress—it really is just your word."
"My word?! Would your Grandpa agree?" Lady Zhou snorted skeptically.
"Grandma, we’ve already written to Grandpa. If you go back this time and don’t quarrel with him, if you show him some respect, Grandpa will certainly agree to this matter." Finally, Lian Manman added, "Although—it might take a bit of financial sacrifice from Uncle."
Offering advice to Lady Zhou left Lian Manman feeling conflicted. Deep down, she really didn’t want to get involved in this messy affair—whatever happens, happens.
Upon hearing Lian Manman mention the letter sent to Old Master Lian, suggesting that reconciliation with him would lead to him not pursuing Aunt Ping, Lady Zhou immediately felt relieved and regained confidence.
Once she regained confidence, her thoughts began to move faster.
"Still have to give her money? She’d like that, wouldn’t she? She’s only doing this for money!" Lady Zhou said angrily and disdainfully.
Did Aunt Ping truly have an affair with Old Master Lian? Lian Manman didn’t know. Did Aunt Ping want to become his concubine? Lian Manman didn’t know either. But one thing was certain—if Aunt Ping really became Old Master Lian’s concubine, it wouldn’t be out of love.
Since Aunt Ping wasn’t sacrificing everything for love, it wouldn’t be hard to deal with her. After all, Old Master Lian wasn’t some high-ranking official or a wealthy aristocrat. To be blunt, he wasn’t even gilded. 𝐟𝕣𝗲𝕖𝕨𝗲𝐛𝗻𝗼𝐯𝗲𝚕.𝗰𝚘𝐦
"Maybe we don’t even need to give her money." Seeing Lady Zhou reluctant to part with money, Lian Manman added, "Grandma, as long as you reconcile with Grandpa, you could give the word to Uncle, and he’ll find a way to resolve the matter. Uncle’s role as County Magistrate isn’t for nothing, is it?"
Lian Manman was telling Lady Zhou that she needed to unite with Old Master Lian. Only then could they maintain authority in the County Magistrate’s household. If Lady Zhou hadn’t quarreled with Old Master Lian this time, she wouldn’t have been sent back in disgrace. Conversely, Old Master Lian’s current life in Taicang likely wasn’t much better either.
Having been insulted by his wife, losing face in front of his children and grandchildren, and with Aunt Ping now an additional topic of gossip, Old Master Lian probably didn’t have much sway in front of the younger generations at this point.
