Reborn as a Landlord-Chapter 87 - 49 Collides_2
Indeed, Lady Zhou was in the room talking to Lady Zhang.
"It’s good that you woke up... Did Old Fourth ask you anything? You didn’t say anything, did you?"
Lady Zhang made no sound.
"Xiuxiu didn’t do it on purpose, you know how hot-tempered Xiuxiu is, you should’ve stayed out of her way. You’ve had several children yourself, they’ve all taken a few tumbles and hits, but were fine, yet this one had an accident," Lady Zhou’s voice said.
Lian Manman’s eyes widened in shock, Lady Zhang’s miscarriage wasn’t due to a fall, it was related to Lian Xiuxiu.
"Don’t cry over spilt milk, I lost two children after they were a month old, but I’m fine now," she continued.
"Mother, it’s not the same," Lady Zhang’s voice choked, "I didn’t provoke Xiuxiu, she insulted me, I even tried to persuade her..."
"Enough, enough. Don’t you act all spoiled now, you and Old Fourth are still young, you can have more children. Living as a family, the last thing we need is gossip and trouble stirring up unrest in the household. In the midst of this busy harvest season, don’t you cause trouble, or you will be in the wrong too..." Perhaps because Lady Zhang had remained silent, Lady Zhou became even more assertive and outright blamed Lady Zhang.
Lian Manman clenched her teeth in anger outside the window. No wonder Lady Zhang had an accident and Lady Zhou didn’t send them a message; it was the neighbor, unable to stand it any longer, who brought them a message, and that’s how they found out. There was a reason behind it after all.
Yesterday, thinking Lady Zhang was going to die, Lady Zhou had said those words to take care of them, to seal Lady Zhang’s mouth. Now seeing that Lady Zhang had survived, she was afraid Lady Zhang would speak out, so she exerted both soft and hard tactics to try and seal Lady Zhang’s mouth again.
Lian Manman felt a fire rising from her heart to the top of her head.
"Second Sister," Xiao Qi tugged at Lian Manman’s sleeve, for he had followed her there.
"Xiao Qi," Lian Manman whispered, "hurry to the fields, call Dad and Grandpa back, tell them there’s trouble at home and they need to come back quickly."
Xiao Qi nodded and turned to run outside.
"Who’s out there?" Lady Zhou heard the noise outside and asked.
Lian Manman burst through the door and stormed into the room.
"So, was it my aunt who caused my mother’s miscarriage?"
"Weren’t you boiling eggs..." Lady Zhou was startled upon seeing Lian Manman but then steadied herself, "What did you hear? You’re just a child, this is none of your business."
"How is it none of my business? If I don’t step in, you all will harm my mother to death. What has my mother ever done to you? When Dad asked, when the Imperial Physician asked, my mother said nothing, taking all the blame herself. And here you are early in the morning, pressuring her again. Are you trying to hasten my mother’s death? If Dad loses his wife and we lose our mother, how does that benefit you?" Lian Manman didn’t mince words as she barraged Lady Zhou with questions.
Lady Zhou, accustomed to being dominant in the family, couldn’t stand being confronted like this.
"You disrespectful..."
Ignoring Lady Zhou, Lian Manman turned to Lady Zhang, "Mother, why are you being so foolish, suffering such a loss without saying anything?"
"Manman..." Lady Zhang was overwhelmed with complex emotions and didn’t know what to say.
"Mother, even if you cover for them, even if you give them your life, they will never speak a word in your favor. As soon as they turn around, they will bully your children too. Look, she even wanted to hit me," Lian Manman said.
"If she wants to hit anyone, let her hit me," Lady Zhang said to Lady Zhou.
Lady Zhou, seeing that she couldn’t keep things under wraps anymore, changed her tone abruptly. 𝚏𝗿𝗲𝐞𝚠𝕖𝐛𝗻𝗼𝐯𝕖𝚕.𝚌𝗼𝗺
"I’ve said all the nice things to you, that child doesn’t know any better, but you should know what’s the right thing to do," Lady Zhou said to Lady Zhang.
Lady Zhou was still forcing Lady Zhang up to that point.
Lian Manman was about to speak again when she heard the sound of footsteps and talking coming from outside; it was Lian Shouxin with several children hurrying back.
"Murder, help! Aunt is going to beat me to death!" Lian Manman immediately yelled.
Lady Zhou had just raised her hand, but because of Lady Zhang’s words, she hadn’t actually hit Lian Manman. Seeing Lian Manman’s reaction, she was immediately furious.
By this time, Lian Shouxin had already barged into the room.
"What’s going on, Manman, how is your mother?" Lian Shouxin asked as he entered.
"Why are you all back here instead of working in the fields?" Lady Zhou, noticing not just Lian Shouxin but also Lian Zhizhi and the others had returned, said with displeasure.
"Dad, my mother’s miscarriage wasn’t from a fall, it was Aunt who beat her. Just now, Granny came over, pressuring Mother not to speak out, and I overheard from outside. Granny won’t let me say it, threatening to kill me if I do," Lian Manman recounted everything she had heard to Lian Shouxin.
"If it wasn’t for Chun Ni and Chun Yan bringing us the message yesterday, we wouldn’t even be able to see my mother for the last time. They knew Mother was in bad shape, but at first refused to call the doctor, just asking Old Lady Wang to come. Later, when they saw my mother was about to die, it was Aunt Chunzhu who insisted on calling Doctor Li," Lian Manman added.
