Reborn as a Landlord-Chapter 1516 - 771: Returning to the Bride’s Parental Home (Part 2)
Lian Manman deliberately brought up the topic with him and told such a story. Wu Lang and Xiao Qi also joined in to comfort him, all out of concern for him. Lian Shouxin understood this in his heart and was naturally touched.
With such a family, he really had no reason to be unhappy because of others.
The next day, after breakfast, Zhang Qingshan’s family returned. Lian Shouxin and Lady Zhang needed to prepare to host Lian Zhizhi’s three-day return, so they were busy at home and naturally didn’t go to the old residence.
Lian Shouli also didn’t come to say anything more. After he went home that day, Lady Zhao and Lian Yeye learned about what he had said to Lian Shouxin and earnestly persuaded him otherwise. Additionally, with the end of the year approaching, he still had unfinished work and not much free time.
In a blink of an eye, it was the day for the three-day return. Early this morning, Lian Manman’s family got up and had a simple breakfast. Lady Zhang and Lian Manman led the people to clean and arrange once more,
as the daughter’s and son-in-law’s three-day return is a big event and should be treated solemnly.
Lady Zhao and Lian Yeye also came early to help. Although Erlang and Luo Xiaoyan lived far away, they arrived early in the morning. After the wedding feast that day, Lady Zhang had told Erlang and Luo Xiaoyan to come today.
Lian Manman’s family had enough people, so there wasn’t a real need for them to do anything. It was just a matter of liveliness, showing that these people weren’t considered outsiders.
As the sun rose a bit high, the sound of firecrackers could be heard outside, signaling that Wu Jiaxing and Lian Zhizhi had returned. A group of people hurried out to welcome them, extending out to the main gate.
Wu Jiaxing was riding a big blue mule, followed by a sedan chair carried by two men. The Wu family had their own carriage, but since it was a new marriage return, they specially hired a sedan chair. Behind the sedan were several men, each carrying a pole with red decorations on it, prepared by the Wu family as return gifts. The first pole carried a large pig’s head draped in red silk. On the three poles that followed were bolts of cloth, fish, and meat.
In Thirty Mile Camp’s wedding tradition, sending a pig’s head on the three-day return represents a very grand gesture. Of course, for families who can’t afford a whole pig’s head, at least some pig’s head meat must be included in the return gifts.
While in Liaodong Prefecture’s custom, the pig’s head is a gift specifically for the bride’s family from the son-in-law. The most representative dish for hosting the son-in-law is chicken. There’s a folk saying in Liaodong Prefecture: when the son-in-law enters, the little chicken loses its soul.
The four chambermaids sent with Lian Zhizhi by the Lian family followed her back, attending on either side of Wu Jiaxing and Lian Zhizhi’s sedan chair. Additionally, a servant employed by the Wu family for errands followed, running back and forth.
The sedan chair stopped at the main gate, and Lian Zhizhi, dressed in red, was helped out of it.
Although it had only been a few days apart, it felt like an annual separation. When Lian Zhizhi got out of the sedan chair and saw Lian Shouxin and Lady Zhang, she called out "Father, Mother" and, along with Wu Jiaxing, approached to kneel and kowtow.
Wu Lang supported Wu Jiaxing, and Lian Manman supported Lian Zhizhi.
"Let’s kowtow first at the archway," Lian Shouxin said.
An incense table with a brocade cushion had already been set up in front of the archway. Everyone walked over, where incense was burned, and bowing performed, with Wu Jiaxing and Lian Zhizhi kowtowing three times before being helped up by everyone, laughing and chatting as they crowded into the courtyard.
Upon reaching the front hall, Lian Shouxin and Lady Zhang sat at the head. Two maidservants came over and set brocade cushions on the ground, and Wu Jiaxing and Lian Zhizhi kneeled on the cushions to properly kowtow to Lian Shouxin and Lady Zhang.
Previously, Wu Jiaxing called Lian Shouxin and Lady Zhang uncle and aunt. After kowtowing, he followed Lian Zhizhi in addressing them as father and mother.
Lian Shouxin and Lady Zhang both smilingly agreed, while a maidservant brought over a tray containing the presents the couple had prepared for Wu Jiaxing as a meeting gift.
The Lian family’s meeting gift for Wu Jiaxing was a pair of jade pendants and a pouch with two small gold lockets inside shaped like Ru Yi. This meeting gift also implied a change of title fee. The Lian family was very pleased with Wu Jiaxing, the son-in-law, so the meeting gift was generous. The pair of jade pendants was of exquisite white jade, and the usual small silver lockets were replaced with high-quality small gold lockets.
Everyone helped Wu Jiaxing and Lian Zhizhi up and let them sit to the side.
Lian Manman, Wu Lang, and Xiao Qi all came over to greet Wu Jiaxing, cheerfully calling him brother-in-law. Xiao Qi’s eyes sparkled as he looked at Wu Jiaxing, his expression clearly saying he wanted a red envelope, a big one.
Wu Jiaxing hurriedly stood up, returned the greeting, and, while smiling, instructed someone to bring the gifts for his brothers and sister.
The gifts Wu Jiaxing prepared for Wu Lang and Xiao Qi were the same: a box of Hu brushes, an inkstone, and a box of Huizhou ink, along with a set of clothes, shoes, and socks, evidently tailored to their sizes. Clearly, the return gifts had been prepared well in advance.
For Lian Manman, the gifts were also a box of Hu brushes, an inkstone, a box of Huizhou ink, and a set of clothes, also complete with shoes and socks.
The gifts prepared by the Wu family for the three siblings were generally the same, but Lian Manman also received an extra string of coral beads. These coral beads were bright red, each as large as a fingertip, and appeared flawless.
In this era, there was no such thing as dyed coral, and coral of such a red color was extremely rare.
Lian Manman felt happy, and Lian Shouxin, seated at the head, nodded slightly, while Lady Zhang’s eyes crinkled with smiles.
Following this, Wu Jiaxing met Lady Zhao, Erlang, and the others. Only then did everyone sit down to chat. After one round of tea, Lian Manman pulled Lian Zhizhi up, and Lady Zhang led the womenfolk to the back garden.
