Reborn as a Landlord-Chapter 1507 - 767: Calculations
Lady Zhou finished serving everyone before serving herself. Though it was all rice with mixed grains, some had bowls piled high, while others just had flat bowls barely full. The grandchildren’s bowls were all full, but Lian Duoduo had the least. Lady Zhou herself had a bowl piled high with mixed grains and a steamed white bun.
"Go ahead and eat." Lady Zhou picked up her chopsticks and said.
Everyone waited until Old Master Lian picked up some food with his chopsticks, then they all started eating quickly in silence. Even after setting aside half of the meal Wu Family sent over, it was still quite a feast.
The meals at the old house were usually plain and lacked meat, so this dinner certainly whetted everyone’s appetite. It didn’t take long before Lian Shouyi finished his first bowl of rice, eating a bun while handing over his bowl for a refill.
Even if it wasn’t all white rice, there was still a lot mixed in, making it taste sweeter than the everyday sorghum rice. Normally, on ordinary days, the refilling duty would be passed to Lady Chiang. But today was different. With such good food, even just refilling was done by Lady Zhou.
Lady Zhou chewed two bites of the fatty meat in her mouth and swallowed, wiped her oily mouth with the back of her hand, and then took Lian Shouyi’s bowl to refill it with a full bowl of rice.
"...Heaven and earth, and yet I still have to take care of you all." While handing the bowl back to Lian Shouyi, Lady Zhou cast a sidelong glance at him. The complaint was mild, carrying more of a hint of flaunting and showing kindness. 𝑓𝘳𝘦𝑒𝑤𝑒𝘣𝘯ℴ𝘷𝘦𝓁.𝑐𝑜𝑚
Lian Shouyi smiled ingratiatingly at Lady Zhou and then put his head down to eat his rice and vegetables.
The whole family ate sweetly and enjoyably; Lady Zhou’s chopsticks also frequently reached into the dish bowl, picking pieces of fatty meat into her mouth, swallowing them with rice.
Lady Zhou enjoyed her meal, but it didn’t stop her from occasionally glaring at Lady He and Lian Duoduo with her eyes. Whenever these two reached for the dish bowls, Lady Zhou’s gaze would follow them, grim and heavy. Most times, Lian Duoduo kept her head down, only occasionally taking a bite from the nearest dish bowl, while Lady He continued reaching for the dishes despite Lady Zhou’s dark gaze.
"Second son’s wife, go fetch a couple of scallions." Lady Zhou saw Lady He’s bowl nearly empty and quickly instructed.
"Mom, there’s enough food, why do we need scallions?" Lady He mumbled as she swallowed.
"As soon as you see food, you can’t even move. The big mouth talks without stopping, how much food can you eat. Hurry up, I can’t get you to move." Lady Zhou said with a stern face.
Towards the end, Lady Zhou clapped her chopsticks on the table.
Lady He took another mouthful of rice and crammed a large bite of vegetables into her mouth before getting down to fetch the scallions. The people at the table were long used to this and continued eating as if nothing had happened.
Once Lady He was gone, Lady Zhou picked up the white bun and tore off a piece, placing it in her mouth. While eating the white bun, Lady Zhou scooped several spoonfuls of sauerkraut chicken soup into her mouth. Then Lady Zhou wiped her mouth with the back of her hand, split the remaining bun into two, handing one half to Lady Chiang and the other to Lian Yaya.
"You both eat." Lady Zhou told Lady Chiang and Lian Yaya.
Lian Yaya took the half bun and continued eating, while Lady Chiang also took the bun but didn’t eat it, instead putting it into Da Niuniu’s bowl.
"When I give it to you, just eat it. No need to save it for Da Niuniu, there’s more in the pot." Lady Zhou said to Lady Chiang.
"Granny, let’s give it to Da Niuniu. With this, she’ll have enough. I can eat anything." Lady Chiang quickly said with a smile.
Seeing Lady Chiang say this, Lady Zhou just glanced at her and didn’t insist further.
Lady He came trotting back with two scallions from the outer room, was about to get on the kang, but was stopped by Lady Zhou.
"I told you to get scallions, and you bring them without even cleaning. With a twist and a turn, you’re as lazy as a pig. Clean the scallions properly, and... two aren’t enough, get two more." Lady Zhou waved her hand and sent Lady He out again.
Only after going twice was Lady He finally permitted to sit back down by the table. She quickly finished the last bites of rice from her bowl and asked for more. Lady Zhou just lowered her eyelids, pretending not to hear.
The food was good today, so Lady He was not about to give up easily. After calling out several times, before Lady Zhou could react, Old Master Lian put down his bowl.
"Take my bowl." Old Master Lian said, as he moved away from the table.
