Reborn as a Landlord-Chapter 1453 - 739: Chaos Amid Turmoil (Part 2)
Moreover, even if they don’t consider Lian Shouli, they have to consider Lady Zhao and Lian Yeye, the mother and daughter.
As everyone sat down, naturally they asked how things were going over at the old house with Lady Zhao.
"... No matter what, they wouldn’t leave, just clinging on. The Woo Family Brothers were worn out too, and if no one kept an eye on them, they would have run off... Old Master has a soft heart, seeing the time, he even had someone make a meal for them," Lady Zhao updated everyone on the situation at the old mansion.
"There’s nothing for them to cling to, just kick them out. I can’t believe it, so many people at the old mansion can’t handle kicking out two people," Lian Manman said.
"Who’s going to kick them out when the Old Master hasn’t said anything formal?" Lady Zhao replied, "I noticed the Second Master’s family seemed pretty happy."
To really get rough, they’d still have to rely on Lian Shouyi’s group; others couldn’t handle it.
"Mom, have you been helping with the cooking all afternoon?" Lian Yeye asked Lady Zhao.
"Yes." Lady Zhao nodded, "Jizu’s wife was too busy by herself, and your grandma just sat on the brick bed scared, so your dad asked me to lend a hand."
"Who stayed for the meal? Were that father and daughter given food, along with the Woo Family Brothers and the wife of Woo Ergou?" Lian Manman asked.
"The wife of Woo Ergou went home. When it was time to eat, Old Master said to let Woo Ergou and Woo Sangou have some too, but the Old Madam chased them away. Only the father and son from the Zhou Family were left to eat," Lady Zhao said.
"Mom, did you and dad also eat at the old mansion?" Lian Yeye asked again.
"Yes." Lady Zhao nodded, but her eyes flickered slightly.
"Xiao Xi, go to the kitchen and see if there’s any warm pastry, bring it over," Lian Manman instructed Xiao Xi.
"Mom, they surely didn’t let you sit at the table, right?" Lian Yeye’s face turned red with anger.
"Old Master invited me to the table," Lady Zhao said somewhat weakly.
"Surely, my grandma didn’t give you a good face, huh?" Lian Yeye covered her face and then let her hand drop, forming a fist, "Oh, if only I could have stayed there longer. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have eaten here, I would have called you." 𝚏𝕣𝕖𝚎𝚠𝚎𝚋𝚗𝐨𝐯𝕖𝕝.𝕔𝐨𝕞
Lian Yeye was very regretful; in just that little moment she wasn’t watching, Lady Zhao had been bullied again at the old mansion.
"It’s nothing, it’s just that bit of work; it was nothing for me to help out. I’m not interested in that meal. If I actually ate there, I couldn’t swallow it," Lady Zhao said quickly.
This was partly to comfort Lian Yeye, and partly true.
"Who cares about that, it’s just unbearable how she treats us like we’re not even people!" Lian Yeye’s voice raised emphatically.
"I bet my third uncle got to eat at the table," Lian Manman remarked.
"He ate at the same table as Old Master," Lady Zhao replied.
Lian Manman fell silent.
"Mom, you went there early in the morning and stayed hungry until now; dad didn’t say anything?" Lian Yeye asked anxiously.
"It was all chaos; there wasn’t time. Just as your dad and I were about to leave, he told me to go home first to eat," Lady Zhao said, seemingly quite gratified that Lian Shouli had remembered to tell her to go have a meal.
At that moment, Xiao Xi walked in with a tray of pastries, and Lady Zhang promptly instructed Lady Zhao to eat while they were hot, skillfully deflecting the conversation.
"Oh, Yeye, I forgot to ask earlier, did our grandpa say he wanted my dad to go over, or did my third uncle come over and ask him himself?" Lian Manman questioned Lian Yeye.
Lian Yeye looked towards Lady Zhao.
"The Old Master didn’t explicitly say," Lady Zhao hesitated before saying, "It just seemed like he couldn’t arrange it all, was terribly worried. The Old Madam did mention wanting you all to go, and even said to call someone from the yamen to seize them or something."
Lian Manman responded with an "Oh," and then immediately changed the subject, refusing to mention anything further about the old mansion.
Meanwhile, back at the Lian Family Old Mansion, everything was shrouded in gloom.
Old Master Lian and Lady Zhou had moved from the eastern room to the western, leaving the eastern room for the Zhou Family father and daughter, along with Woo Ergou and Woo Sangou. Old Master Lian had told the Woo Family Brothers that since they caused the trouble, they needed to clean it up. He even specifically instructed Lian Shouyi’s household to keep a close watch on Old Master Zhou and the Woo Family Brothers, promising Lian Shouyi some benefits.
Still worried, he reminded Lady Chiang to keep an eye out in the outer room.
Lian Shouren, badly beaten, lay on the brick bed in the western room with Old Master Lian and Lady Zhou sitting beside him. The old couple felt uncomfortable leaving their familiar bed for this room, but right now, they had no choice.
"... You even made food for them; now that they’re full, they’ll be even more energized to wear us down. When will it end? From the looks of them, those two won’t be easy to get rid of. They might just settle in for food and drink and not leave," Lady Zhou complained to Old Master Lian.
Lady Zhou’s comment about the father and daughter from the Zhou Family not being cunning meant they weren’t quick-witted or were somewhat foolish.
"You think I wanted to do it?" Old Master Lian was overwhelmed with issues, "If we didn’t feed them, just look at that old one; what a face he had. And that frail body, after a whole night of fuss, if anything were to happen while they were here, we’d be in big trouble! A murder charge."
In these times, a murder charge is a nightmare for everyone involved. Once entangled, whether or not the death was your fault, you could end up broke, separated from your family, or worse.
"Of course, it’s also because I feel sorry for them... People do have a conscience. When treated this way, they wouldn’t have the heart to harm us," Old Master Lian said after taking a breath.
"Just like Woo Ergou, Woo Sangou," Lady Zhou spat, "Have a conscience, my foot! Wolves’ hearts and dogs’ lungs!"
"For common folk like us, encountering such trouble is tough," Old Master Lian sighed.
"Dad, we can’t keep these people here," Lian Shouren interjected anxiously, propping himself up, "Not to mention anything else, but we can’t endure them hitting us. A few more hits, and it’ll cost a life."
Old Master Lian looked towards Lian Shouli, who was sitting on the floor.
