Reborn as a Landlord-Chapter 1437 - 732: Midnight_2
"Enough, stop shouting. They’re all sound asleep. I’ll do it myself," Old Master Lian said with some irritation.
Outside, Lady Zhou was becoming anxious, and she began to curse loudly. Her voice was powerful and carried well in the still night, nearly reaching the edge of the village. Her shouting woke up distant and nearby dogs, which started barking, followed by the chickens and ducks being disturbed.
Lady He still showed no sign of movement, but the light in the West Room of the Upper Room came on.
With all this noise from Lady Zhou, everyone in the courtyard had already woken up. Lady Chiang quickly got dressed and came out to persuade Lady Zhou to go back inside.
"Granny, do you need to boil water? Let me do it. Please go back inside and rest," Lady Chiang said softly as she supported Lady Zhou.
"No need, I don’t believe it," Lady Zhou shook her arm, "If I wanted you to boil water, wouldn’t I ask you? I’m calling for the second daughter-in-law, and I refuse to believe I can’t get her out!"
With renewed determination and with Lady Chiang by her side, Lady Zhou felt even bolder. She simply came out of the Upper Room, took her small steps to the door of the East Wing, and started banging on it while cursing aggressively.
"...Are you in there, you damned cowards? Your wife stays out in the dead of night and hasn’t returned yet?... You lazy swine, sleeping like the dead..." The more Lady Zhou cursed, the nastier her words became, and her voice grew louder.
In the pitch-black night, Lady Chiang did not dare to leave Lady Zhou’s side and could only hold her arm. Feeling extremely embarrassed by Lady Zhou’s cursing, she couldn’t say anything and just lowered her head in silence. Inside the Upper Room, Old Master Lian knew Lady Zhou was venting her anger. He didn’t want her causing such a commotion, but his wound was hurting, and he was also angry. So, out of spite, he got out of bed to boil water himself.
Old Master Lian was also annoyed, using greater force in his movements, causing a racket in the outer room.
In the East Wing, Lian Shouyi’s family eventually couldn’t withstand Lady Zhou’s scolding, and the door opened. Lian Yaya timidly came out.
"Granny, what’s the matter?" Lian Yaya’s voice trembled with fear, and she was shivering. It was clear it wasn’t just from the cold night air, but more from fear.
"You little brat," Lady Zhou was still angry and didn’t care about how much Lian Yaya had been serving her recently. She scolded harshly, "I’ve been calling for ages, didn’t you hear? Do you have cotton stuffed in your ears?"
Lian Yaya dared not respond and started crying from being scolded.
Lady Zhou slapped Lian Yaya aside and continued to curse at the house until Lady He also came out.
Once Lady Zhou herded Lady He and Lian Yaya into the Upper Room, Old Master Lian had finished boiling the water. He kindly urged Lady Chiang, Lady He, and Lian Yaya to go back to sleep. This prompted Lady Zhou to redirect her anger towards him immediately.
"I don’t need you; I have hands and feet," Old Master Lian said in a huff.
Lady He, eager for relief, turned and left, dragging Lian Yaya with her after taking a couple of steps. Seeing Old Master Lian and Lady Zhou starting to argue, Lady Chiang didn’t know whether to mediate or not, so she simply returned to her room.
After a while, Lian Shouren came out of the room but was also sent back by Old Master Lian.
"Go rest; if you need hot water, here it is, otherwise, just go back to sleep," he said.
"Who am I doing this for? What am I doing this for?" Lady Zhou sat on the stove, clapping her hands, "Am I a lazy person, unwilling to work? Isn’t this all for you? You spineless old fool!"
At this point, Old Master Lian didn’t want to bicker with Lady Zhou anymore. He simply scooped water from the pot and went inside. Lady Zhou, feeling aggrieved, muttered curses outside for a while longer. Since no one replied, she eventually went inside too.
Inside the house, seeing Old Master Lian awkwardly applying a hot towel to his wound, Lady Zhou cursed while snatching it away to help him apply the hot compress.
Of course, Lady Zhou’s mouth never stopped throughout the process.
Old Master Lian played deaf and mute. The fuss lasted until almost dawn, and only then did the old couple go back to sleep.
The next day, Lian Manman and the others heard about what had happened. Of course, they didn’t know the specifics, only that Lady Zhou had gotten up at midnight to call Lady He to work and cussed all night.
Lady Zhang went to the Pickled Vegetable Workshop and learned all about what Lady Zhou had said. She still felt fearful of Lady Zhou’s scolding prowess.
"...She leaves no room for retreat, just cursing to her heart’s content. If you have a thin skin, you’d be driven to jump into a well from her insults. I’m not speaking for Yaya’s mother, but some things a mother-in-law shouldn’t say!" Lady Zhang complained to Lady Li.
Lady Li lovingly patted Lady Zhang’s hair.
"...Back then, your dad praised your father-in-law as a good man, a cultured one. Your mother-in-law, we didn’t really understand her, only that she seemed clean and neat. We heard she was sharp-tongued but also heard she treated her eldest daughter-in-law well. We all hoped for the best, thinking since we gave a generous dowry, and you were capable and amiable, even if she didn’t fancy you, she wouldn’t mistreat you. Who would’ve thought... you endured so much hardship."
Zhang Qingshan and Lady Li were illiterate, but they never beat or cursed the children, nor used foul language to insult their own children. When they hadn’t split the family, Lady Zhang was so compliant to Lady Zhou largely because she feared her cursing.
To avoid humiliation, Lady Zhang preferred to endure other hardships.
"We’ve finally made it through," Lady Li and Lady Zhang sighed together.
Woo Ergou and Woo Sangou had been gone for a few days when Old Master Lian developed another row of sores around his mouth. Just when everyone thought the Woo Family Brothers had taken the money and fled, these two actually returned, travel-stained.
And they brought back a girl.
