Reborn as a Landlord-Chapter 1427 - 727: Dissatisfaction (Part 2)
After setting the snacks on the table, the two little maids went to fetch warm water and brought cloths inside.
"Mom, let’s eat while it’s hot." Lady Zhang first put down her needlework and called for Lady Li and Lian Manman to wash their hands and eat some snacks. "Xiao Qi, you and your father come over to eat too."
The whole family washed their hands and enjoyed the snacks with hot tea.
There were two plates of snacks, one of which was date paste cake. Soft and fragrant, the family loved it.
Lian Shouxin picked up a piece of date paste cake, not putting it directly into his mouth but rather looking slightly dazed.
"Hubby, why don’t we pick a couple of these date paste cakes and send them to Old Master Lian?" Lady Zhang noticed Lian Shouxin’s daze and, after thinking for a moment, tentatively suggested.
Lian Manman’s family often sent snacks to Old Master Lian, including these date paste cakes, which were his favorite.
Lian Shouxin hesitated and didn’t speak.
"Mom, let’s skip it this time. The date paste cakes are a bit greasy, and I heard grandpa over there has a heat condition, so it’s not good for him to eat this," Lian Manman said nonchalantly.
Lian Shouxin said nothing, and Lady Zhang didn’t bring it up again.
Lian Zhizhi glanced at Lian Manman, while Zhang Caiyun chuckled, nudging Lian Manman’s arm with her elbow.
Lian Manman ignored Zhang Caiyun, but when the two of them were alone in the outer room, Zhang Caiyun pressed Lian Manman for an answer, and Lian Manman finally spoke up.
"I’m not happy," Lian Manman told Zhang Caiyun. "Sister Caiyun, do you remember I told you, when my sister got engaged to Brother Jiaxing, my grandma pretended to be sick, embarrassed my sister, and made trouble for us?"
"I remember, of course I remember," Zhang Caiyun nodded. "Knowing about it made us all angry. When we talked with others, everyone said they had never seen a grandmother like that.... But what’s it got to do with today?"
Lian Manman’s family was never reluctant to send food to Old Master Lian and Lady Zhou, and Lian Manman had never stopped it.
"My sister’s wedding date was just set, and now he’s hastily talking about engagements with the head of the household. It’s supposed to be an honorable thing, and now everyone’s aware. And he’s throwing money everywhere. Does it mean he wants to compete with my sister for the date?" Lian Manman squinted and said.
"He’s causing a scene without considering anything, Sister Caiyun. What’s his intention?"
"I just felt something was off, but I hadn’t thought deeply about it," Zhang Caiyun blinked and said.
"Maybe he didn’t think deeply about it either," Lian Manman smiled faintly. "What he’s doing shows he’s not happy inside, intentionally or not, he’s causing trouble for my sister and for us."
Old Master Lian’s actions this time, certainly partly because of his favoritism towards Lian Shouren, also showed his subconscious dissatisfaction with Lian Manman’s family.
"What a spectacle, spending money like water. Luckily, our family and Brother Jiaxing’s family know each other well, and everyone knows what each person is like. Brother Jiaxing’s family treasures my sister and doesn’t mind these things. If it were another family, they might not call off the engagement, but they’d hold a grudge. When my sister gets married and starts her life there, it could be a pitfall, waiting for her to fall into it unexpectedly," Lian Manman said indignantly.
"Sister Caiyun, I’m just telling you this. Make sure not to let my sister know, to spare her any upset," Lian Manman instructed Zhang Caiyun again.
Lian Zhizhi diligently did her needlework in the room and did not hear their conversation, but coincidentally, Lady Zhang came out of the house, and Lian Shouxin returned from the front yard with things, catching the tail end of the conversation.
The couple then asked Lian Manman what it was about that she couldn’t tell Lian Zhizhi for fear of upsetting her.
Seeing there was no way to hide it, Lian Manman recounted what she had told Zhang Caiyun to the couple.
Lady Zhang felt sorry for Lian Zhizhi, but her ingrained sense of virtue and respect for elders made it difficult to speak ill of Old Master Lian, so she turned a cold shoulder to Lian Shouxin.
"We’ve never forgotten him with good food and drinks, honoring him like something else, yet why does he still stab us in the heart! Treating us daughters like what!... It’s all your fault," Lady Zhang threw a remark at Lian Shouxin.
Lian Shouxin was already not feeling comfortable inside, and being used as a punching bag by Lady Zhang only intensified his inner turmoil. However, Lian Shouxin had the merit of not quarreling or arguing with Lady Zhang over such matters. Even if he couldn’t admit it verbally, he understood in his heart that it was his parents who were in the wrong. Therefore, he was willing to take some venting from his wife and children without complaint.
As a result, since the family separated, they never had a real argument about the affairs of the old residence.
It must be said, many men in the same situation find it hard to do the same.
Of course, Lady Zhang and her family were also very restrained, never excessively pressing or harping on issues.
Being good-natured with mutual understanding, at times yielding a bit to each other, it’s strange if the days weren’t harmonious.
Lian Shouxin, feeling squeezed, couldn’t easily dispel it, so he called his youngest son, intending for the two of them to take a walk to ease their minds.
Just as the father and son were about to step out of the main gate, they ran into Lian Yeye, who had come running to give Lian Manman a heads-up.
"What, Woo Ergou and Woo Sangou?" Hearing what Lian Yeye said, Lian Shouxin abandoned the thought of taking a walk and followed Lian Yeye back, planning to listen carefully to see what was going on.
Lady Zhang, Lian Manman, and the others were surprised to hear this news, even Lady Li was slightly moved.
"Is it that Old Woo Family with the Lai Zu Zi? How come your old residence still has interaction with such people?" Lady Li seldom commented on matters concerning the old residence, but she couldn’t help herself this time.
