Chapter 1413: Chapter 720: Pleading for Favor (2)

Old Master Lian noticed Lian Shouxin’s displeased expression and quickly swallowed the words he was about to say, pondering for different phrasing. But finding no suitable words, he simply skipped the latter part.

"You can’t write two ’Lian’ characters with one stroke; you are brothers of the same mother. Even if the bones are broken, they are still connected by tendons. If they are not good, it also brings disgrace to your face. If things are good on your side, they also benefit somehow. Whatever others say or think is their business; we are family and always stand together."

"Your eldest and second brothers—well, your second brother is just like that; he’s lazy, speaks poorly, heartless, he can’t stir up much trouble. As for your eldest brother," Old Master Lian glanced at Lian Shouren again and sighed, "Your eldest brother knows his mistakes, and after returning, he’s endured hardships. He said himself, from now on, he will live honestly as a farmer."

"Your eldest brother is over forty, look at his hair, all white. When we walk together, people from behind might think he’s the old one and I’m the younger." Old Master Lian said, his eyes turned red, and tears began to fall. "Old Fourth, look at your elder brother... he’s pitiful."

Old Master Lian’s last words were trembling.

Weren’t they supposed to talk about marriage? Yet the mention was about Lian Shouren, not Si Lang! Lian Shouxin slightly understood. He turned his head to look at Lian Shouren. Lian Shouren sat on the bench, his back hunched, eyes red, looking somewhat pitiable.

"A man, without a woman to serve him, can’t manage. Your mother and I are both old bones now; how many more years do we have? You all have partners to care for each other. I can’t stop worrying about your eldest brother." Old Master Lian wiped his tears, "I never brought up this before. But now, Wu Lang is successful. Isn’t there a saying, when one person gains the Way, even the chickens and dogs ascend to heaven."

"Here at the old house, these two generations haven’t had big aspirations. Just live life as it is. To live a life, he has to have his own family. Especially at your eldest brother’s age, he needs someone to take care of him. Moreover, a man without a wife might be talked about when going out."

"People will say, Wu Lang is so successful, yet his uncle is single, it’s easy to say but hard to hear. For our Old Lian Family, it’s a big household, and it’s disgraceful for anyone."

"My plan is, while I’m still healthy, to find a wife for your eldest brother again. Old Fourth, this matter needs your approval. I’ve prepared the money for this marriage, it’s sufficient."

The word ’sufficient’ here doesn’t mean an attitude of ease but indicates that there’s enough silver coin, enough to manage the task.

Just as Old Master Lian was speaking, there was a clang in the outer room.

"Who’s in the outer room, what are they doing?" Just as Old Master Lian reached the crucial point, he was interrupted, causing a surge of anger.

Unexpectedly, after he asked twice, there was no response from the outer room. Instead, there were footsteps leaving.

"Someone came in, in broad daylight? Jizu, go and check." Old Master Lian instructed.

The phrase ’someone came in’ didn’t mean a guest arrived, but implied a thief came in.

The folk custom at Thirty Mile Camp was simple, the old house had high walls and a deep courtyard, and the gate was a thick wooden door, so it’s almost impossible for a thief to come in during the day. Lian Jizu got up and went to the outer room after hearing Old Master Lian’s words.

"Second aunt, what are you doing? Did you drop the water dipper in the outer room?" Lian Shouxin remained seated, listening to Lian Jizu speaking to outside from the outer room.

"Not me, I didn’t enter the Upper Room." Then came Lady He’s voice, growing more distant, heading towards the main door.

After a while, Lian Jizu returned to the room.

"It must be my second aunt, she hurriedly went outside. I don’t know what she’s intending to do." Lian Jizu said upon entering.

"Ignore her, she’s no good!" Old Master Lian muttered under his breath.

"Old Fourth, what do you think about this matter?" Old Master Lian softened his voice again, looking at Lian Shouxin, "I wish to resolve this concern while I’m still alive."

"Dad, this matter, you ask me? You shouldn’t ask me about this. I’m not fit to say anything." Lian Shouxin said while standing up, "Dad, Mom, if there’s nothing else, I’ll be going. There’s something back home."

Lian Jizu and Lian Shouren quickly stood up, and Old Master Lian looked a bit surprised at Lian Shouxin.

"I’m leaving, you all stay in the room, no need to see me off." Lian Shouxin lowered his head and briskly walked out of the room.

Lian Shouli, who came with Lian Shouxin, had been silent until then. Seeing Lian Shouxin leave, he stood up to follow.

"Old Three, wait a moment." Old Master Lian, failing to stop Lian Shouxin, quickly stopped Lian Shouli.

"Old Three, you and Old Fourth have a good relationship. Help persuade Old Fourth. You’re all brothers, I’ve explained the reasoning; now you go and persuade him well. I’ll wait for your reply."

Lian Shouli stood there dazed, his thin frame wrapped in a thick coat appearing quite skeletal.

Before Lian Shouli could speak, the sound of hurried footsteps echoed from outside, and soon the curtain was lifted as Lian Shouyi rushed in.

"Hey? Weren’t they saying Old Fourth was coming? Where is he? Gone?" Lian Shouyi entered the room, glancing around with his big eyes, speaking carelessly.

"Didn’t you see Old Fourth? Where did you rush off to?" Old Master Lian said peevishly, "Waiting for you, the flowers wilted."

"Dad," Lian Shouyi grinned toothily and glanced at Lian Shouren, Lian Jizu, and Lian Shouli, "Is it about finding a wife for my elder brother again?"
