Reborn as a Landlord-Chapter 1378 - 703: Brazen and Shameless
The second watch of the night, asking for pink votes.
In September, the weather was already a bit chilly. However, inside Lian Yeye’s house, it was very warm because the kang was heated. Lian Yeye’s family didn’t have farmland, but they never lacked firewood. Lian Shouli worked as a carpenter, accumulating a lot of sawdust, which was perfect for burning. Besides, this family of three was industrious—they regularly collected firewood and chopped branches, never running short of fuel. Plus, since it was cold, Lian Shouli needed to work on the ground, so he had lit the kang early on.
Lady He was sitting at the head of the kang, Lady Zhao was also on the kang doing needlework, and Lian Shouli was sitting on the ground doing carpentry. Both of them smiled and greeted when Lian Manman arrived.
Lian Yeye was beside Lian Manman, urging her to sit on the kang.
"Quick, get on the kang; it’s nice and warm," said Lady He, who, as a guest, was even more hospitable than the hosts Lian Shouli and Lady Zhao. "The kang at your Pickled Vegetable Workshop is also hot, but it’s too hot to sit on. This kang is just right."
Lian Manman and Lian Yeye exchanged a glance and both shook their heads discreetly.
Lady He loved visiting places, whether it was the Pickled Vegetable Workshop or Lian Yeye’s house. A big reason was her fondness for warm kangs. The Old Master’s house didn’t have much firewood, so they had to conserve it, prioritizing the Old Master and Lady Zhou. Moreover, heating the kang was a task—not very tiring, but dirty. So with Lian Shouyi and Lady He out visiting, the kang in the West Wing Room could be left unheated.
Lady He was also too lazy to heat the kang and unwilling to sit on a cold one, hence her fondness for other people’s heated kangs.
Such lazy women were rare among the tenant farmers but not unheard of.
Lian Manman and Lian Yeye both removed their shoes to sit on the kang. As Lian Manman looked down, she saw two shoes casually tossed on the ground next to the kang.
They were rough cloth shoes, very large, with no embroidered patterns, roughly stitched, and with one or two very obvious tears on the uppers. There was no need to ask; anyone could tell these were Lady He’s shoes.
In fact, you didn’t need to see the person—just looking at these shoes revealed how slovenly their owner was. Not only were the shoes damaged, but they were also thrown carelessly, the two shoes lying haphazardly, with one sole facing up.
Lian Manman sighed and shook her head, her gaze falling back on Lady He. Lady He sat cross-legged, her feet exposed. The socks on those feet no longer showed their original color. One had a thumb-sized round hole at the sole, exposing the skin.
And that exposed skin was several shades darker than the socks. Lady He’s skin wasn’t that dark, so it was easy to imagine what that meant.
How often did Lady He wash her feet? Or perhaps she never washed them at all?
Lian Manman gained a deeper understanding of the funny face Lian Yeye had pulled earlier.
Lian Manman got on the kang but didn’t sit next to Lady He; instead, she sat beside Lady Zhao. From their seating positions, it was clear that Lady He was acting like the host.
Perhaps sensing Lian Manman’s gaze, Lady He grinned broadly and even reached out to scratch her big toe.
"My feet are clean; not stinky at all. I just washed them yesterday," Lady He lied without blinking.
Lian Yeye rolled her eyes; fortunately, Lady He’s feet didn’t smell. But her claim of washing them yesterday was clearly a bold-faced lie.
"Second Aunt, aren’t you mistaken? Was it yesterday’s yesterday from last year?" Lian Yeye asked bluntly.
Lian Yeye’s sharp question made Lian Manman burst out laughing.
"How could it be last year? It was just yesterday. I wash my feet every day," Lady He said without a change in expression.
Lian Yeye rolled her eyes again and gave Lian Manman a helpless look. Lady He’s skin was so thick you couldn’t pierce it with a needle!
With Lian Manman’s arrival, Lian Yeye busied herself brewing tea and preparing snacks to entertain her.
"Yeye, I’m just sitting for a while; no need to trouble yourself," Lian Manman told Lian Yeye.
"Let her prepare, let her prepare," Lady He interjected before Lian Yeye could respond. "If you don’t eat, I will. I’ve been sitting here all this time and haven’t had a drop to drink."
Lian Manman was rendered speechless.
Lian Yeye brought hot tea, and although she was very reluctant, under Lian Shouli and Lady Zhao’s urging, she poured a cup for Lady He too. Lady He’s skin was thick, but Lian Shouli and Lady Zhao couldn’t bring themselves to ignore her. After all, she was the second sister-in-law. Pouring tea for Lian Manman without offering her any would make the couple look bad.
