After several days of rituals, purchasing scriptures, distributing porridge and steamed buns, Lian Manman’s family was busy for a few days, and Old Master Lian’s condition actually improved slightly. Although he still couldn’t speak, he could move his body and his appetite was better.

Having improved a bit, Old Master Lian was no longer willing to lie on the kang and be cared for. Even for relieving himself, he insisted on going to the outdoor toilet with assistance, rather than doing it indoors.

"The Old Master knows how to care for others." When Lian Shouxin and Lady Zhang were discussing this at home, they both expressed their sentiments.

The ones Old Master Lian cared for were naturally Lian Shouren and Lian Shouyi. In the previous days when Old Master Lian couldn’t move and needed constant care, he only ate plain rice. He refused to drink water unless extremely thirsty and avoided greasy food, all to trouble the caring Lady Zhou and his two sons as little as possible.

Even Lian Manman had to admit that although Old Master Lian was biased, he was very disciplined and cared about dignity. Lian Manman also believed that if it were Lian Shouxin or Lian Shouli taking care of him, he would act the same way. His actions were not only out of care for his sons, avoiding causing trouble for them, but also because of his concern for dignity.

Needing help with bowel and urinary movements could strip a person of dignity. At least, that’s how Old Master Lian viewed it.

Besides, as his body could move, Old Master Lian wanted to stop taking medicine. Recently, Doctor Li visited again to adjust the prescription. Most of the added ingredients were tonics for his body, costing quite a bit.

The money for the medicine and Doctor Li’s fee were naturally paid by Lian Manman’s family.

Though Old Master Lian couldn’t speak, he managed to express his desire to stop taking medicine. In this aspect, he was like any elderly tenant farmer. That is, when sick, they try to endure. If they can’t, they have to consult a doctor and take medicine. After a couple of doses show slight improvement, they don’t wish to continue.

This is merely out of habitual thrift, caring about saving money.

Both Lian Shouxin and Wu Lang disagreed with Old Master Lian’s intention. They continued to prepare the prescribed medicine and it was sent to the old residence, where two long-term workers staying there would boil it every day and make sure Old Master Lian drank it.

Days passed without much incident, and soon it was the second day of the second month.

As the saying goes, on the second of February, the dragon raises its head, a significant day for tenant farmers.

Wu Lang specially visited Scholar Wang’s house to discuss with him, and they jointly funded a dragon dance troupe to perform in the village. They also hired an opera troupe to set up a stage on the communal threshing ground and perform operas all day.

Entertainment was scarce for tenant farmers, especially during the off-season. Hence, not only did the villagers from Thirty Mile Camp come out in droves, but even people from the surrounding villages came to join the festivities. On the threshing ground, even before the opera stage was fully set, people were already crowding with long benches and small stools to secure a spot.

Since Lian Manman’s family contributed money, the dragon dance troupe first performed at the village archway, then at Lian Manman’s house entrance. Lian Manman came out to watch and gave out rewards, and the troupe thanked her before continuing, traversing every street in the village.

As for the opera, Lian Manman didn’t go to see it. She had caught a slight chill last night, her nose was stuffy, and she felt tired, avoiding further exposure to cold by staying home.

Since the incident before the family separation, when Lian Manman nearly lost her life, her health had been good, with hardly any headaches or colds. Therefore, when she mentioned feeling unwell and decided not to watch the opera, the family became concerned.

Doctor Li was naturally invited immediately.

After checking her pulse, Doctor Li said it was just a minor cold, and since the cold was superficial, she just needed to let it pass, stay warm, and eat a light diet to recover.

Lian Manman agreed with Doctor Li and didn’t need a prescription.

Seeing Lian Manman’s reluctance to take medicine, Lady Zhang sliced ginger, boiled a thick bowl of ginger soup, added several spoons of brown sugar, and served it to Lian Manman.
