Reborn as a Happy Wife in a Rural Family-Chapter 35: Pretending to Have Amnesia
Chapter 35: Chapter 35: Pretending to Have Amnesia
After that, Gu Qingli went to a nearby restaurant to have a light meal.
As she was leaving the restaurant, a cold wind blew. Gu Qingli shivered and hurried back to the Medical Clinic to watch over the woman.
Meanwhile, Xiao Yunjing distractedly went shopping with Eldest Brother Xiao. He only answered Eldest Brother Xiao perfunctorily, either with a nod or an agreeable word. This made Eldest Brother Xiao lose interest in asking further questions.
By the time the brothers returned home, it was already past two in the afternoon.
"Third, where’s your wife?" Ms. Jiang asked Xiao Yunjing when she saw that only two of them had returned.
"Mother, she has something to do in the city. I’ll pick her up later," Xiao Yunjing replied, carrying his bundle into their room.
"Eldest, what’s wrong with Third?"
Eldest Brother Xiao really didn’t know what had happened between him and Gu Qingli, and Third wouldn’t say anything about it either.
He said, "I don’t know, Mother. Don’t worry, Third said he would pick her up later. Quickly call Cailian (Ms. Yang’s given name) and the others out to help carry the things. Everything you asked me to buy is here."
Ms. Jiang nodded and glanced towards Xiao Yunjing’s room a few times.
After putting the bundle away, Xiao Yunjing came out to help carry the items. He fed the ox hay and water, then, without even eating a meal, he drove the ox cart back to the city.
Ms. Jiang watched Xiao Yunjing’s departing figure and shook her head.
As he drove the ox cart, Xiao Yunjing thought about the woman. In his previous life, he would have already reached the border by this time and wouldn’t have been aware of the situation at home. But he later heard his father mention once that around this same time, there had indeed been an assassination attempt, but they had managed to fight off and kill their assailants.
A few days ago, Li’er dreamed that assassins in black had come to kill them, but so far, no one had appeared.
No one had come, yet today a female assassin appeared in the city. Yes, that woman was an assassin; it was just unclear how she had fainted in front of Li’er.
She couldn’t possibly be here to assassinate Li’er. Li’er hadn’t offended anyone in her past or present life. Besides, those few good-for-nothings from the Gu Family didn’t have the capability to hire an assassin.
They themselves had been too busy to cause trouble lately.
Xiao Yunjing, unable to make sense of it all, simply focused on driving the cart, eager to reach Li’er’s side quickly.
By late afternoon, Xiao Yunjing arrived at the Medical Clinic.
"Oh? You’re back, Sir?" The doctor, recognizing the young lady’s husband, rose and greeted him.
"Yes. How is the young lady? Has she woken up?"
"Not yet. Your wife is inside watching over her. Go in and see."
"Alright." Xiao Yunjing nodded.
Gu Qingli heard the familiar voice and quickly came out. Indeed, it was Xiao Yunjing. She went up to him, took his hand, and said, "It’s so cold outside. Didn’t I tell you to come tomorrow?"
Though her words sounded like a rebuke, her soft, almost tender tone was filled with deep concern.
Xiao Yunjing’s heart warmed. "I was worried about you," he said. "Have you had dinner yet?"
"Not yet. Let’s go eat now and find an inn," she replied.
"Alright, let’s go." He was indeed hungry. He had only eaten a bowl of dough drop soup at home that morning and hadn’t had a bite or a sip of water since.
The two of them informed the doctor and then left.
They returned to the noodle shop where Gu Qingli had eaten at noon, and each ordered a bowl of noodles.
"How is that woman?" Xiao Yunjing asked, enveloping her small hand in his large one.
Gu Qingli replied gently, "Her fever has subsided. There’s nothing seriously wrong with her. She should wake up tomorrow morning."
"Good. As long as she wakes up, we’ll no longer be responsible for her," he said.
"Alright, I know," she agreed.
After finishing their noodles, they found an inn on the same street. They first stabled the ox cart and instructed the inn attendant to feed the ox well.
Afterwards, the two returned to the Medical Clinic. Only a Medicine Apprentice was there; the doctor had already gone home.
"Sir, Madam, the doctor instructed that I should watch the clinic tonight. You can go back and rest." After saying this, the Medicine Apprentice put up the door planks and, rubbing his hands together against the cold, quickly ran into the inner room.
Xiao Yunjing said, "Alright then. Thank you for your trouble, young man."
The Medicine Apprentice waved his hand, urging them to leave quickly so he could shut the main door. It was too cold; the wind was whistling and seeping into the room.
As a martial artist with internal energy, Xiao Yunjing wasn’t afraid of the cold at all.
He also found it very strange. In just over a month, his martial arts had reached the peak he had achieved in his previous life. This speed was too incredible.
Moreover, Gu Qingli didn’t seem to fear the cold much either.
The two nodded and quickly returned to the inn.
Back at the inn, they asked an attendant to bring hot water. After washing up, they lay down on the bed.
With his beloved wife in his arms, Xiao Yunjing couldn’t muster even a hint of desire. He frowned, completely puzzled about what was wrong.
Gu Qingli saw his deeply troubled expression and snickered softly while nestled in his arms.
HEHE~ Her potion was working quite well, wasn’t it? Making him able to only look.
However, this body was still too young; it wasn’t suitable to engage in marital relations too early. They could wait another two years.
"Li’er, am I ill?" Xiao Yunjing suddenly asked. He himself could identify some common poisons and had checked himself; he hadn’t been poisoned by anything.
It was very strange.
"What illness?" Gu Qingli asked, feigning a blank look.
Seeing her innocent, dazed expression, Xiao Yunjing lost even more of his mood.
"It’s nothing. Let’s sleep," Xiao Yunjing said, gently stroking her soft hair.
"Mm," she agreed.
「The next day」
They woke up early, mainly because they weren’t used to the inn’s beds. They waited until the Medical Clinic opened before going in.
"Sir, Madam, you’re here!" the Medicine Apprentice exclaimed as soon as he saw them, pulling them towards the inner room. "The young lady has woken up, but she seems a bit strange. Go take a look."
They exchanged a glance and immediately went inside.
On the sickbed, the woman had turned over and sat up. She looked at them warily, her eyes filled with defensiveness.
"Who are you?" the woman asked sharply.
"We are the ones who saved you. Yesterday, you fainted in front of me and asked me to save you. Don’t you remember?" Gu Qingli stated calmly.
"Saved me?" the woman murmured, seeming to be thinking.
"Yes," Gu Qingli nodded.
The woman seemed to recall something and lowered her guard a little.
"Now that you’re mostly recovered, you can return the ten taels of silver I advanced for your treatment yesterday, and then we can go home," Gu Qingli added.
"Silver?" The woman felt around her clothes.
"I don’t have any."
She doesn’t have any? Does this woman take me for a sucker?
That was ten taels of silver! She, Gu Qingli, had only just escaped poverty yesterday. To be swindled out of ten taels of silver for no reason made her heart ache with regret.
"Then where is your home? We can take you back, and you can have your family pay," Gu Qingli quickly asked, intending to also probe the woman’s background.
"Family? Who... am I?" the woman asked them, looking bewildered.
"Are you pretending to have amnesia?" Gu Qingli lost her patience. Her expression darkened, and her tone became heavy. She had kindly saved this woman’s life, yet the woman was trying to fool her.
Although it wasn’t a huge sum, that money didn’t grow on trees either! Ten taels of silver was enough for their family’s expenses for several months.
The key thing was, she was unwilling to have spent it saving a liar.
"I’m not," the woman stated emphatically.
Xiao Yunjing, however, had been observing her every move and couldn’t detect any signs of deception. She didn’t seem to be feigning madness or playing dumb.
