Chapter 29: Chapter 29: Dream

Once the meat was cooked, Gu Qingli transferred it to a large clay pot, and Xiao Yunjing carried it to the stove burning in the main room.

It was indeed good to have many people around. The bowls and chopsticks were prepared in no time, and everyone was just waiting for Gu Qingli to give the signal to start.

Gu Qingli first tasted it to check if it was flavorful enough. Feeling it was just right, she announced, "Alright, we can eat!"

Everyone gathered around the stove and began to eat.

The roe deer was very large. Gu Qingli had only cooked half of it, but even that half made a huge pot, and everyone ate until they patted their stomachs in satisfaction.

Especially the three little ones; their small bellies were round and full.

This pot of roe deer meat was indeed delicious. There wasn’t much in the way of seasoning; its deliciousness was due to her adding the spiritual spring water.

She hadn’t seen any chili peppers here yet. If there were chili peppers, adding them would make the flavor even more amazing.

However, she had some in her space. After spring began next year, she could find a way to get some seeds out to plant.

"Third Daughter-in-law, what you made is really delicious!" Ms. Jiang praised Gu Qingli lavishly. No wonder she usually ate so little at each meal. Look, today she even ate two bowls!

"Mm, Third Sister-in-law’s cooking is even more delicious than the food at the restaurants in town," Eldest Brother Xiao commented, nodding as he ate.

"I think it’s even better than the food in the county city’s restaurants," Second Brother Xiao chimed in.

"You’ve eaten there?" Ms. Wang asked.

"No, no," Second Brother Xiao quickly shook his head.

Ms. Wang gave him an ’I don’t believe you for a second’ look.

The rest of them chuckled, covering their mouths.

"Once we have some money, we could open our own small restaurant," Ms. Yang suddenly suggested.

No one responded. Money? They could barely get enough to eat; how could they have spare money?

Ms. Yang knew she had spoken out of turn, her words merely prodding at everyone’s sore spot.

Gu Qingli, however, nodded and said, "That’s feasible."

Although her ambitions didn’t lie in that direction, her family was large. If they opened a restaurant and managed it well, it would be more than enough to provide for the entire family’s food and drink.

The others remained silent upon hearing this; only Xiao Yunjing patted her hand.

After lunch, they saved the leftovers for dinner. Everyone helped clean up before returning to their own rooms.

The snow fell even harder that day. The ground was covered in a thick layer. Gu Qingli was playing for a while when Xiao Yunjing pulled her back into the house.

"Li’er, how about we send the other half of the roe deer to Father and Mother?"

"A little less than half then. That should be enough for the four of them for a few days."

"The other day, I heard Father say he wanted to invite some people for a meal. This half of the roe deer should be about right. If we want some, I can just go hunting in the mountains again."

Gu Qingli nodded. "Okay, I’ll go with you."

"I can handle it alone. You stay at home."

"Alright."

After Xiao Yunjing went out, sure enough, it wasn’t long before he carried that half of the roe deer away.

Seeing him leave, Gu Qingli found herself with nothing to do, so she simply got onto the heated bed and lay down. Before long, she fell asleep.

In a daze, Gu Qingli saw countless black-clothed, masked men fighting in the courtyard. They surrounded and attacked the four Gu family men—father and sons. Some of the black-clothed men even raised their swords to assassinate Ms. Jiang, Ms. Yang, Ms. Wang, and the three little ones.

In an instant, sounds of miserable shrieks were heard. Gu Qingli wanted to scream, wanted to move, but she couldn’t.

She looked towards Xiao Yunjing, hoping he could save them.

But Xiao Yunjing, under the flashing swords and shadows of the black-clothed men, was covered in injuries, his life clearly hanging by a thread.

A sharp pain pierced Gu Qingli’s heart, and with all her might, she let out a roar.

"Li’er, what’s wrong?" Xiao Yunjing had returned to see her face contorted in pain. Her mouth was open, but no sound came out. He immediately patted her awake.

Gu Qingli’s eyes flew open to see Xiao Yunjing before her. She let out a ragged breath and threw herself into his embrace.

Xiao Yunjing was both surprised and overjoyed. This was the first time his wife had initiated closeness with him.

He held her tightly, gently patting her back, guessing she must have just had a nightmare.

"Did you have a nightmare?"

"Mm," Gu Qingli sniffed, the scene from her dream leaving her deeply unsettled for a long time.

Seeing Ms. Jiang and the others being killed, she had only felt anxious. But when she saw Xiao Yunjing’s life in peril, her heart had ached intensely.

It turned out that, unknowingly, this man had already taken a place in her heart.

"What kind of nightmare did you have?" Xiao Yunjing asked softly.

"I dreamt that many men in black came into our courtyard and killed everyone they saw," Gu Qingli finally said. Whether this dream was a premonition or simply a dream, she felt she had to tell him.

The Xiao Family was definitely not simple. Although Mr. Xiao seemed to be in good health, the dark circles under his eyes couldn’t fool her; Mr. Xiao was ill. Xiao Yunjing and his two brothers knew martial arts, and not just some superficial kind. Though the three boys hadn’t attended a private school, they were all literate and also practiced martial arts.

Sure enough, upon hearing her words, Xiao Yunjing’s body stiffened, and the hand patting Gu Qingli’s back paused for a moment.

"It’s alright, that was just a dream." Xiao Yunjing rested his chin on Gu Qingli’s head, his words comforting, but his mind was already racing.

Indeed, just as she’d thought.

In that case, she should also start working on the things she wanted to do. No matter what the future held, she had to have the ability to protect herself. She was someone who had died once and cherished her life dearly, especially since she had died so tragically and so young before.

The next day, after breakfast, Gu Qingli went to help Ms. Wu. Xiao Yunjing, meanwhile, drove the ox cart to town to buy some things, as Gu Dalin was treating everyone to a meal that day, taking advantage of the fresh roe deer meat.

"Sister, you’re here so early!" As soon as she arrived, Dashuang and Xiaoshuang crowded around her, brushing the snow off her clothes and then pulling her to warm her hands by the fire.

"It’s not that early." After warming her hands, Gu Qingli took the two boys to see Gu Dalin.

"Li’er’s here!" Gu Dalin heard her voice and called out before she even entered the room.

"Yes, Dad. How are you feeling today?" The three of them—sister and brothers—entered the room.

Gu Dalin looked lovingly at the three siblings and said, "Much better. In less than a month, Dad will be able to get down and walk."

"Dad, you should still lie down for a while longer. They say ’an injury to the muscles and bones takes a hundred days to heal.’ There’s nothing to do right now, so there’s no rush." The three siblings sat before Gu Dalin. Gu Qingli noticed his complexion was much better, he had put on some weight, and even looked a bit fairer. Seen this way, Gu Dalin wasn’t bad-looking at all.

"Haha," Gu Dalin chuckled. "I’m used to working. Lying on this heated bed all day like this, I feel really uncomfortable."

"But you still need to let your body recover properly," Xiaoshuang said.

Gu Qingli patted the two boys’ heads. This little fellow Xiaoshuang is really clever; his words leave no room for argument.

Gu Dalin also ruffled Xiaoshuang’s head. "Alright, Dad will listen to you all."

"That’s good. Dashuang, Xiaoshuang, you two keep a close watch on Dad."

The two boys nodded vigorously.

Gu Dalin looked at the three siblings, smiling without saying a word.

"You two stay here and talk with Dad. I’m going to help Mom," Gu Qingli said, standing up.

"Go on, Sister. We’ll come over in a little while too," Dashuang said.

Gu Qingli nodded and came out, heading to the kitchen. The kitchen was a wooden shed built to the left of the main house. At this moment, Ms. Wu was busy working alone.

Gu Qingli breathed on her hands to warm them and went over. "Mom."

"Ah, Li’er, you’re here! Just help Mom tend the fire," Ms. Wu said.

Gu Qingli nodded. She saw that water was boiling in the pot; they were cooking rice first.
