Rebirth! The Assassin's Revenge-Chapter 435: Let’s Go Home
Gu Ningyue wiped away her tears and, turning around by the light of the flashlight, quickly rummaged to bring out many things: "Wow, this is the doll my mom bought me! It’s actually still here. Ah, what a pity, it’s so worn out now, it can’t be used."
As she spoke, she reluctantly held onto it, unwilling to let go.
Ling Tianyou looked at her and smiled: "This doll must have been quite expensive when you were a child!"
Gu Weiwei’s mom managed to make her daughter happy by buying her such a doll. It seems she truly loved her daughter.
Gu Ningyue nodded: "There was a time I got first in the whole class. My mom saved up money for a month just to buy me this doll as a gift."
It was the only toy in her childhood, and she always cherished it greatly.
Ling Tianyou looked at the doll in Gu Ningyue’s hands. Although the doll was a bit misshapen from being squashed, it was made of resin, so it wasn’t impossible to fix or clean it.
"Let’s take this back too!"
As he spoke, Ling Tianyou reached out and picked up a tattered award certificate, on which Gu Weiwei’s name was prominently written.
Though time had passed and the paper was old and yellowed, looking like it might crumble with a little force, the name was still recognizable.
"No wonder you sing so well. You even won a prize in elementary school."
Upon hearing this, Gu Ningyue shifted her attention from the doll to the certificate in Ling Tianyou’s hand: "That! That might have been one of the few shining moments in my life."
Ling Tianyou reached out and patted her head: "It’s okay, it’s all in the past now."
Gu Ningyue responded and continued looking for other things she wanted to take.
She kept searching for who knows how long until she was tired out, sitting down without a care in a dusty spot: "Where should we put these things when we take them back?"
"No worries, I can ask Aunt Zhang to clean a room for you to store your and your mother’s things."
Gu Ningyue nodded, sniffling in the dark.
The doll her mother bought for her, the certificate she got as a child, and the spoon her mother liked most before she passed.
There’s so much more, the stories between her and her mother.
Oh right, there’s also the cross-stitch her mom embroidered by hand, with little butterflies sewn over from the ones she caught.
Fortunately, the glass covering kept it looking new, despite the dust.
She still remembers how the afternoon sun always warmly draped over her mom, who, after making her meal, would sit alone by the door doing cross-stitch.
The dim lights would cast upon her mother, making her gentle face look even more tender.
Occasionally, her mom would turn to her with a gentle smile: "Weiwei, eat well."
Back then, she never wondered why it was always only her eating after school.
It wasn’t until much later that she realized the line her mom always said, ’Mom ate at the store, you eat.’ was just a beautiful lie.
Because when her mom became seriously ill, she took her mom’s place working at the store, which only provided one meal at noon and nothing else.
Later, seeing her as a pitiful little girl, they let her and a few employees eat from the big pot together.
How did she feel back then?
She had long forgotten; she just remembered the heartache, immense pain.
Later, she became very wealthy, enough to treat her mom’s illness, but... it was already too late.
Gu Ningyue’s eyes reddened slightly as she turned to Ling Tianyou, saying: "When my mom passed away, there wasn’t money to buy her a burial plot, and later it was my mentor who helped bury her. Do you know what I was thinking then?"
Ling Tianyou squeezed her hand: "What were you thinking?"
Gu Ningyue forced a smile: "I was thinking, if only I was eighteen back then. When my mom was seriously ill, I could have taken good care of her. I could have gone to work and bought her better medicine. But I was too young then. Even wanting to use my own money to provide a decent burial for my mom wasn’t possible..."
Big tears rolled down from her eyes, and Ling Tianyou felt a pang of heartache as he held Gu Ningyue tightly in his arms.
This was probably the only soft spot in this always-strong girl’s heart. Otherwise, she wouldn’t be crying so heart-wrenchingly in the night.
She showed him her most vulnerable side. If even he couldn’t be relied upon, it would be a second heavy blow to her.
Ling Tianyou wrapped his arms around her, gently patting her back, "Cry it out! You’ll feel better after crying."
He realized he, living such a happy life, had never experienced Gu Ningyue’s hardships, not even capable of offering comfort.
The girl in his embrace cried bitterly, and for the first time, he regretted his own circumstances.
Who knows how long passed before Gu Ningyue finally pulled away from his embrace: "Let’s go! Let’s head back!"
Ling Tianyou brushed away the tears on her face, his eyes full of heartache: "Alright, I’ll drive us back!"
Gu Ningyue, sobbing, asked: "Do you... do you know the way?"
Ling Tianyou responded gently: "How could I get lost with you here? Let’s organize what you want to take, and I’ll help you carry them."
Gu Ningyue nodded, looking at the old items scattered around her, filled with reluctance: "I want to take all of these."
Ling Tianyou smiled and good-naturedly looked at her: "Okay."
As he said this, he began to gather the nearest items to hold in his arms.
Gu Ningyue quickly stopped him, "Let me! I’ll carry them myself! Don’t get your clothes dirty."
Ling Tianyou looked at her, and Gu Ningyue quickly explained: "I didn’t mean anything else. I just mean I can carry them myself. It’s fine."
One piece of Ling Tianyou’s clothing cost more than ten thousand dollars; her belongings together wouldn’t cover even a brooch on it.
These things were worlds apart from Ling Tianyou.
"It’s okay, let’s go! We still have a long way to walk!"
As he spoke, Ling Tianyou, ignoring Gu Ningyue’s surprised gaze, gathered most of the stuff in his arms and stood up.
Gu Ningyue silently picked up the remaining items and chased after him: "You’re not mad, are you?"
Under the moonlight, Ling Tianyou’s face became even more mesmerizing: "No, I’m your boyfriend, you don’t have to be cautious around me, understand?"
Even if there was a gap in status, so what? He didn’t care; no one mattered more than she did.
Gu Ningyue smiled through her tears, "Yes, I understand, let’s go home!"
For the first time, Ling Tianyou didn’t use the title of fiancé to pressure her but said he was her boyfriend.
She was very happy.
