Rebirth: Pampered by the Lord-Chapter 2030: Keeping Watch
In the deep mountains and ancient forests, trees were everywhere, and they all looked nearly identical. As Celestial Master Zhang walked, he became somewhat dizzy and couldn’t distinguish north, south, east, or west.
He couldn’t tell whether he was walking toward the outskirts of the mountain or deeper into the wilderness. In the end, drenched in sweat and exhausted, he could walk no further and sat down to rest under a tree.
After this ordeal, the sky grew even darker. In the distance, the faint howling of wolves came...
"Awoo...!"
Originally half-dead from exhaustion, Celestial Master Zhang shivered all over, quickly scrambled up from the ground, and staggered as he tried to find a way out.
But the night had fallen; without the sun to guide him, he couldn’t distinguish directions, making it far from easy to find a way out.
Celestial Master Zhang felt hopeless; he wasn’t afraid of ghosts; he was just afraid of wolves, tigers, and leopards.
At this moment, his stomach growled, but Celestial Master Zhang couldn’t care less as saving his life was the priority. Taking advantage of the faint light left in the forest, he began searching for a towering tree. He figured, if he had to spend a night in the forest, it was better to find a big tree and spend the night up there—safer than being devoured by wolves and leopards below.
Finally, he found a towering tree that took four or five people to wrap their arms around. With immense effort, he managed to climb up.
This tree was massive, its trunk wide, and where it branched out was also spacious. Celestial Master Zhang found a spot, sat down, and set down his bundle, feeling a bit more secure only at this moment.
Then again, his stomach rumbled; earlier, he was too tense to even feel hunger, but now that he was settled, he suddenly felt ravenously hungry.
Celestial Master Zhang took out some rations from his bundle and began to eat.
"Crunch, crunch."
In the silent forest, the sound of Celestial Master Zhang’s chewing was quite distinct. As he was eating heartily, he suddenly heard movement below the tree. Stopping his eating, he looked down, meeting a pair of glowing green eyes directly. Startled, he trembled, and the rations fell to the ground...
It turned out that, at some unknown time, a wolf had arrived at the base of the tree, gazing up at Celestial Master Zhang, as if particularly hoping he would fall. Its mouth was drooling, staring at Celestial Master Zhang as though he were a piece of meat, occasionally licking its lips.
Seeing something fall from the tree, the wolf’s front paws hunched suddenly, leaping up to catch Celestial Master Zhang’s dropped rations, which it devoured in just two or three bites, then lifted its head again, longingly watching Celestial Master Zhang.
At this, Celestial Master Zhang lost all appetite, tightly hugging the tree trunk, utterly afraid of accidentally falling down and becoming wolf food.
This wolf was peculiar, sitting there on the ground with its head held high, its glowing green eyes fixed on Celestial Master Zhang, silent all the while.
Celestial Master Zhang was both frightened and alarmed, his body stiff as he sat in the tree, not daring to blink while confronting the wolf with his gaze.
The night grew deeper, with the continuous sounds of wild animals in the distance, making Celestial Master Zhang shiver uncontrollably.
The wolf, too, seemed to be in a stalemate with him, staying at the base of the tree all night without changing its position.
As dawn approached, Celestial Master Zhang finally couldn’t resist and dozed off, nearly falling in a moment of drowsiness. Luckily, he managed to grab the tree trunk, his body suspended in mid-air.
