The sun rose early, shining in through the window, golden light illuminating the room in warm colors. A gentle breeze rustled the curtains, bringing with it the chirping of birds and the muffled sounds of the city coming to life.
Orion woke up, massaging his temples.
That dream again.
It was always the same—glimpses of betrayal, of blood, of her face. His jaw clenched. It had been years, and still his former life pursued him like a shadow that would not recede.
Taking a harsh breath, he pushed the images away.
Today was the start of something new.
Getting out of bed, he bathed and changed into a new set of robes. The material was soft but firm, cut to flatter his muscular physique. His bluish-white hair, still damp, fell naturally forward across his forehead, setting off his angular features. His frigid blue eyes, deep and unreadable, regarded him from the mirror.
Good-looking.
Firm.
Ready.
A weak smile pulled at his lips. "Beginning today... I do everything I can."
As Orion descended the grand staircase, the rich aroma of breakfast filled the air—freshly baked bread, honeyed fruit, and roasted meat. At the foot of the stairs, both of his mothers, Celia and Sera, awaited him. The moment they saw him, their lips curled into knowing smiles.
Sera spoke first, her voice dripping with teasing mischief. "Celia, look at our Orion. He's become such a good young man. I won't be surprised if we have a queue of daughters-in-law at our doorstep soon."
Celia giggled, covering her mouth with a dainty hand. "No question about it. With that face and bearing, we may have to begin making arrangements for marriage proposals well in advance."
Orion's face went taut for an instant. Love. Marriage. The bitter recollections gnawed at the fringes of his thoughts, unwelcome and uninvited. "I will never make that mistake again."
But gazing at his mothers', so glad and free, he could not bring himself to spoil the spirit. He smiled instead, breaths shallow.
"Stop teasing me, Mother," he grumbled, rubbing his brow.
Their refusal only to stir their mirth. Sera laughed sweetly, and Celia offered a loving grin.
"Alright, alright, we'll cease teasing you—at least for the moment," said Celia with a wink.
Orion shook his head, letting it out in exasperated frustration. "Where is Elara?"
Sera smiled. "Elara made sure to get dressed properly for the market trip, so she ate her breakfast in her room."
Orion nodded. "I see. Well, provided she eats properly."
With that, he sat down with his mother at the table. The warmth of family enveloped him, a sensation that was foreign to his previous life. They talked about things of no import—Sera's insistence that he dress more suitably, Celia's soft reminders to watch out in the city. Orion sat there, quietly savoring these moments.
After breakfast was complete, Orion got up and tidied his clothes, ready to leave. However, before he could even take a step in the direction of the door, there came hurried footsteps along the hall.
Turning, he found Elara coming down the stairs.
She looked stunningly.
Her dark, curly Black hair fell in waves down her back like silk, and her deep blue eyes glinted like the purest lake. She was attired in a golden-white robe, the material flowing gracefully around her slender figure. She had an aura of elegance to her, but the manner in which she hurried downstairs, all but tripping, almost broke that illusion.
Sera hummed with a laugh. "My, my. Our little Elara is simply radiant today. Isn't she, Celia?"
Celia nodded in concurrence. "Indeed. It appears we have another family heartbreaker."
Elara's face flushed red. "M-Mother!" she complained, pouting.
While the women giggled, Elara shifted towards Orion, her demeanor suddenly uncertain. She tugged at the hem of her robe; her voice gentle.
"Brother... do I look okay?"
There was something vulnerable in her eyes—a quiet longing, a silent request for validation.
Orion gazed at her for a moment before giving a small, sincere smile. "You are lovely, Elara. The attire becomes you nicely."
The sentiment was plain, but to Elara, it was everything. A glimmer of happiness grew in her chest, her heart missing a beat. She looked down demurely, her fingers tightening around her robe a little more.
Repressing her happiness, she nodded hastily. "T-Thank you, Brother."
Orion, oblivious to her inner restlessness, shifted towards the door. "Let's go to the market."
Sera and Celia don't see Elara's inner restlessness also. Both smile because both consider their children is very close to them. And after both women and Elara move towards the door of reference.
When they stepped out into the mansion, a line of waiting horses, a magnificent carriage, and numerous guards stood ready in disciplined rows.
One man moved forward.
He was tall and imposing, his muscular physique clear under highly polished armour. His face was serious, but his deep-set eyes were full of respect. With a sharp salute, he said.
"I am Black, leader of the fourth troop. It is my privilege to guard you today, Young Master and Young Miss."
Orion arched an eyebrow and looked at his mother. "Mother, I'm just off to the market. Do I need this many guards?"
Sera's smile was soft. "Orion, you're of royal blood. Whether you want it or not, you must always be guarded."
Celia nodded. "Even if the city is secure, it's always a good idea to take precautions."
Orion sighed. "Fine, fine. Okay."
As he was about to mount the carriage, Celia strode towards him and pressed a pouch into his hand. It was heavy with a telling weight—gold coins.
"Take this. Spend anything you like."
Sera turned to Elara then and pressed a similar pouch into her hand. "Here, Elara. Get something good for yourself."
Elara smiled widely. "Thank you, Mother!"
Orion nodded. "Thank you."
There were four classes of coins to measure wealth in Eldora.
1. Bronze Coins – General money, handled by commoners. (100 bronze = 1 silver)
2. Silver Coins – Standard for general bartering and trading for middle classes. (1,000 silver = 1 gold)
3. Gold Coins – Money of merchants and nobles. (10,000 gold = 1 platinum)
4. Platinum Coins – Highly rare and highly expensive, reserved only for the richest and most senior nobles. One gold coin could provide a month's food for an ordinary family.
As the carriage passed down the streets, Orion gazed out the window. The city pulsed. Merchants cried out their goods, from spicy incense to glittering gems. Children played as they chased down the streets. The aroma of fresh-baked bread and roasting meat blended with the air, a heady mixture of scents.
Alongside the carriage, Commander Black sat his horse. Orion hailed him.
"Which shop sells the best weapons in the city?"
Without hesitation, Black answered. "That would be Iron Fang Armory, Young Lord. They are renowned for their craftsmanship, cultivation pills, and enchanted gear. Many high-ranking nobles purchase their equipment there."
Orion nodded. "Then let's go there."
The carriage turned slightly, heading toward the heart of the market.
Next, a huge structure came into view, banners sporting the image of a sword and a dragon flapping in the wind. Its atmosphere was that of power and prestige.
Orion's lip curled into a smirk.
"Let's see what this is all about."
And so, their next destination had been planned.
