Rebirth: Love in the Apocalypse-Chapter 173: Bitter Odour
Qin Wu and Mo Chenxuan also knew this.
After all, too much information was just as bad as too little.
An hour later, Xu Anying left the villa, and Qin Wu sighed.
"She is a lifesaver." She said, and Mo Chenxuan nodded.
"Fortunately, she chose to follow us. Otherwise, her ability would be an obstacle if she chose another territory." He said.
Since they didn’t have anything urgent to do, the two rested in the villa and waited for night to fall.
At around midnight, they quietly left the villa and went to the reservoir.
For fear of insects and contagions, the reservoir was more like a gigantic tank than a natural water body.
At this time, the reservoir was closed, and the two had to work hard to quietly shift the lid to reveal a gap.
"Let’s start." Mo Chenxuan said, and both began pouring ordinary space water into the reservoir.
However, despite their efforts, it still took four hours to almost fill the reservoir.
When that was done, Qin Wu turned to Mo Chenxuan with an uncertain expression.
"How much well water should we add?" She asked.
"The reservoir has a capacity of fifty million litres. I think mixing in one million litres of well water won’t be too noticeable. What do you think?" Mo Chenxuan asked.
"Let’s try it first. We can make adjustments if the outcome is not what we want."
After that, the two added one million litres of well water and then scooped two cups to test.
"Not bad." Qin Wu said, and Mo Chenxuan agreed.
Although it didn’t taste different from ordinary water, the water was refreshing but not so much that it would alarm others.
"I am exhausted. Let’s go back." Qin Wu urged, looping her arm with Mo Chenxuan’s.
"Do you want to rest or practice?" Mo Chenxuan asked as they walked.
"Rest. I will practice from tomorrow."
"Okay."
As usual, the two slept in the space and woke up feeling refreshed.
After cleaning up and dressing, they exited the space and had breakfast with the Zhang couple.
"Young master, young miss, this is what you asked for." Uncle Zhang said and slid a folder towards the two.
After swallowing the food in his mouth, Mo Chenxuan picked up the folder, opened it, and removed a few documents from inside.
The documents were the report on Base Three, including the rumours about cannibalism.
"Uncle Zhang, what do you think? Do you think the rumours are true?" Qin Wu asked after reading the documents.
However, Uncle Zhang didn’t immediately answer.
Instead, he fell into thought and a minute later, he sighed before he began speaking.
"Our people spoke to a couple that experienced the matter firsthand." Uncle Zhang started and quickly continued.
"They apparently sought shelter at Base Three, and the female ability user was asked to give up her partner as food supply."
"However, the two have a good relationship, and they found an opportunity to escape from base Three."
"Where did they go after escaping from Base Three?" Mo Chenxuan asked.
"They went to the nearby Carefree base and later followed others to the city B base."
"How credible is their accusation?" Qin Wu asked.
"Young miss, I have checked the list of survivors from Base Three, and only a few are ordinary people." Uncle Zhang said, but Qin Wu shook her head with a thoughtful expression.
"It’s not strange that most arrivals are ability users." She said.
After all, the world had just experienced a terrible winter, and many ordinary survivors, especially those in small bases, didn’t make it.
Additionally, travel was dangerous, and it was not uncommon for ordinary survivors to die on the road.
"I have considered that, but there is one thing..." Uncle Zhang started, his expression revealing his disgust.
"Most of the Base Three survivors have a characteristic bitter odour, common in cannibals." The man said, causing Qin Wu to wrinkle her nose.
In their previous life, a researcher concluded that cannibals had a lingering bitter odour, as if the heavens were deliberately setting them apart from other humans.
Knowing this, Mo Chenxuan and Qin Wu asked the territory’s staff to keep a lookout to avoid recruiting cannibals.
That said, bitter odour did not equate to cannibalism, hence Mo Chenxuan and Qin Wu planned to further investigate before taking action.
"Did you wipe our footprints after the investigation?" Mo Chenxuan asked, and Uncle Zhang nodded.
"Don’t worry, young master." The old man said.
After breakfast, the Zhang couple left, and the remaining two exchanged an uneasy glance.
"I didn’t expect to encounter cannibals so soon." Qin Wu said with a melancholic expression. 𝕗𝕣𝐞𝐞𝘄𝐞𝚋𝚗𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗹.𝚌𝕠𝚖
Although the winter was harsh, there were still plenty of supplies and capable people, especially ability users would not starve.
However, most of those who became cannibals did not eat humans because they lacked food, but because they craved meat.
In the end, cannibalism was mostly about greed rather than necessity.
"Chenxuan, we can’t spare them." Qin Wu said, and Mo Chenxuan nodded.
They had seen this kind of thing in their previous life.
Even if the cannibals had arrived at a better base and could access more food, they would probably continue hunting fellow humans.
Knowing this, Mo Chenxuan and Qin Wu didn’t plan to let such dangerous elements take root in the base.
"It’s time to don our masks and let the night shadows take out the trash. " Mo Chenxuan said.
"I am a little looking forward to it." Qin Wu chuckled and said.
"Just a little?" Mo Chenxuan asked, clearly not believing her.
"Chenxuan, we are messengers of justice, not maniacs who enjoy killing people." Qin Wu said in a self-righteous voice, and Mo Chenxuan chuckled before rubbing his wife’s hair.
"You are right. The Night Shadows are messengers of justice." He said and quickly continued.
"However, we have a meeting to attend before we deliver justice."
Soon after, the two left the villa and walked to their office in the administration area.
When they arrived, it was five minutes to ten, but the chiefs and their deputies were already waiting in the meeting room.
