Rebirth: Love in the Apocalypse-Chapter 170: Space 2
Unfortunately, the courtyard was large and had many rooms, but only a few doors could be opened.
Excluding the bedroom, the two found a study, a kitchen, a sitting room, a cellar, a pantry, and two bathrooms.
The sitting was exquisitely furnished but small, as if the builder had long known that no guests would ever visit the courtyard.
As for the other rooms, the cellar was filled with wine gourds while the pantry had sacks full of grains and other ingredients.
"Do you think these things are still edible?" Qin Wu asked, looking at the sacks that were stacked from floor to ceiling.
"I don’t smell mould, so they are at least not mouldy." Mo Chenxuan answered, but he was also uncertain whether the food could be eaten.
After all, the warehouse could preserve things at their original quality, but that was not necessarily true for the rest of the space.
"I am not in the mood to examine them now. Leave them for later?" Qin Wu asked, and Mo Chenxuan nodded.
After that, the two left the pantry and went to the study.
The study was larger than their bedroom.
However, its size was not the most interesting thing about the room.
As soon as they entered, Mo Chenxuan and Qin Wu saw a life-sized painting of two people.
At a glance, the people looked like themselves.
However, both had long hair and wore ancient-style robes.
Additionally, the painting depicted Mo Chenxuan holding a purple-black sword while Qin Wu was holding a silver-white sword.
"This..." Qin Wu exclaimed in a shocked voice.
"What’s going on here? Are they our past life selves?" She wondered, but Mo Chenxuan couldn’t answer because he was just as shocked.
"Wu’er, look at the sword stand below the painting." He finally said, and Qin Wu did as asked.
A moment later, she narrowed her eyes but didn’t look away from the sword stand.
"Those are the swords we are holding in the painting." She said, and Mo Chenxuan nodded.
"Indeed." He said, and also narrowed his eyes.
He didn’t know what was going on but felt that the purple-black sword was inexplicably connected to himself.
"Chenxuan, I don’t know why, but I want to touch the silver-white sword." Qin Wu said, but forcibly suppressed the temptation.
"I have the same feeling for the purple-black sword." Mo Chenxuan said and forced himself to look away.
Excluding the painting and sword stand, the room had two desks and a large bookshelf.
At a glance, there were still books on each desk, as if the owners had only just stepped away and would soon return to continue their work.
Seeing this, Mo Chenxuan walked to one of the desks and closed an open book to read the title.
"Compendium of mutant plants, volume one." He read, and a trace of surprise flashed in his eyes.
After regaining his composure, he opened the book and saw an index.
Unlike a dictionary, the index was not arranged in alphabetical order.
Instead, the plants were listed according to their order of appearance.
Realising this, Mo Chenxuan opened the next page and saw an entry for common grass.
"The earliest mutation of common grass is vine grass, which can pierce people and suck their blood." He read with a thoughtful expression.
Although his group had not encountered this type of mutation, he had heard of it and knew it was first observed in the earliest days of the apocalypse.
After confirming the validity of the compendium, he turned a few pages and read another entry before closing the book.
"The information in this book is quite useful to researchers and other survivors." He said.
"It’s not just that one." Qin Wu said and quickly continued.
"There is a compendium for superpowers, mutants, zombies, beasts, including sea beasts, insects, and others, but all are volume one."
Hearing this, Mo Chenxuan turned and saw Qin Wu standing in front of the bookshelf.
"Chenxuan, I am confused." Qin Wu said.
"What do you mean?" Mo Chenxuan asked.
"I originally thought our space had something to do with a past life we don’t remember, but..." Qin Wu started, frowned, and continued.
"Did the world suffer an apocalypse at some point in the unrecorded past?"
"It’s possible, but there is another possibility." Mo Chenxuan said, and Qin Wu raised an eyebrow in question.
"It’s also possible that our past selves or some other power foresaw the apocalypse and prepared these things for our survival."
"You are right." Qin Wu nodded when she heard the speculation.
However, both were shooting in the dark and didn’t have evidence supporting or disproving any of their speculations.
"There is a lot to unpack, but we don’t have time." Mo Chenxuan said, remembering that the base was about to face a siege.
"Go out?" Qin Wu asked, but Mo Chenxuan shook his head with a mischievous smile.
"Not yet." He said, grabbed Qin Wu, and placed her on the desk for another round of consummation.
From the study to the bedroom, the two messed around for half a day before turning in for a short rest,
The next day, they exited the space and appeared in their bedroom.
Looking out, Qin Wu saw it was almost noon and angrily pinched Mo Chenxuan’s waist.
"We played for too long." She said, but Mo Chenxuan only chuckled and rubbed her hair.
"Let’s go downstairs. Aunt Zhang should have already prepared a late breakfast for us." He said, leading Qin Wu out of the room.
As expected, Aunt Zhang brought out the breakfast as soon as the two sat at the dining table.
"Did anything happen while we were away?" Qin Wu asked, and Aunt Zhang sighed before nodding.
"Something did happen." She said, and the two immediately stopped eating to look at Aunt Zhang.
"What happened? Is it something that the leaders can’t handle?" Qin Wu asked, and Aunt Zhang shook her head. 𝑓𝑟ℯ𝘦𝓌𝘦𝘣𝑛𝑜𝓋𝑒𝓁.𝑐ℴ𝓂
"My old man is handling it, but the process is slow." Aunt Zhang said and began explaining what had happened while the two were enjoying their wedding night.
