Rebirth: Leading Families to Survive in the Apocalypse-Chapter 817 - Eight Hundred Seventeen: An Ordinary Person
Chapter 817: Chapter Eight Hundred Seventeen: An Ordinary Person
The Mutual Leading Biological Detection Center was situated on the very edge of the Eastern Suburbs. Beyond that was a stretch of deserted fields.
Even though it was only ten in the morning, the weather was so hot that it seemed to melt the pitted asphalt road, and everyone just wanted to find the equipment Lian Ze mentioned and then head back to the base.
"There should be few people here, even zombies are rare."
Su Xiangzhe said slowly as he drove.
"Someone has been here, and someone has killed zombies,"
Lu Hao noted as he looked at the scattered zombie corpses by the roadside. These zombies seemed to have been smashed to death with blunt objects, not neatly like those killed by Special Ability Users, and the bodies also appeared to be fairly recent.
Could it be that some ordinary people had been here recently?
"Someone,"
Mao Qiqi pointed towards the front of the car and said.
"Eh? Is there someone in this remote wilderness?"
Lin Xiuyuan asked curiously.
"One person, an ordinary person, over there."
The group continued along the route indicated on the map. Luckily, many signs from before the Apocalypse were still visible, and they quickly found the "Mutual Leading Biological Detection Center," and the ordinary person Mao Qiqi mentioned was inside.
"Could it be that some team had an accident passing by here and this person took shelter inside?"
Lin Cheng speculated.
"Don’t know, but it’s just an ordinary person, what’s there to be afraid of? Shall we knock on the door too?"
Lin Xiuyuan asked as he looked at the tightly locked gate.
He intended it as a joke, but to his surprise, Lu Hao and his family actually did what he said, and Lu Hao really knocked on that silver-gray metal door.
"Good idea, we wouldn’t want to scare anyone, we are all civilized people,"
Lu Guanhai stood in a nearby shadow waiting.
Sizzling~
A sound of a signal rang out, and everyone turned in surprise towards it, only to see that the visual telephone at the gate flickered and lit up.
A clean-faced middle-aged man appeared on the palm-sized visual telephone.
"Ahem, hello,"
Huang Yunxiang, who was originally facing away from the screen, quickly turned around to greet him.
"..."
The middle-aged man widened his eyes, his mouth opened slightly for a moment, but he said nothing.
"Hello, can you hear me? We are survivors from S City base,"
Lu Hao waved and asked.
"...I can hear you,"
The man’s voice came through somewhat hoarse.
...
Lian Ze had been interestedly observing the surroundings ever since the visual telephone lit up, and once they entered, he realized that the interior didn’t resemble the dilapidated exterior of the building.
Walking down the glass-sealed corridor, the group looked around the biological testing facility in shock and curiosity, while Lu Hao kept his eyes on Shi Ran, who was leading them forward.
"Nice, big brother, you still have electricity here?"
Lin Cheng asked joyfully.
"Solar power, nothing unusual about that,"
Shi Ran now spoke in a clear voice, leading them into the hall of the testing facility and gesturing for them to sit down.
"What would you like to drink? Tea or plain hot water? I don’t have coffee or anything, and even the tea is sun-dried by myself,"
Shi Ran explained on his own.
Before the apocalypse, Shi Ran had been one of the researchers at this facility. When the apocalypse erupted at the early stage, only a few people who were working overtime remained in the facility. Because it was located quite remotely, most of Shi Ran’s colleagues had already left work early to go home. Additionally, since the security of the facility itself was very tight, there were no large-scale zombie attack incidents here.
"There used to be a few colleagues here with me, but they left together because they missed their families too much, leaving me all alone,"
Shi Ran said with self-mockery.
"The apocalypse has been going on for a year now, how have you survived here by yourself?"
Lin Xiuyuan asked incredulously, not understanding how this person had managed to live up to now, especially since there seemed to be no food even though there was electricity.
"Our company might not have paid for overtime, but it did provide a lot of free food during those hours, and I managed to survive on that. But there’s not much left now, and I’m afraid I won’t last much longer,"
Shi Ran reflected and then looked around at the others.
"We are not interested in the food you’ve been raising, we just want to find a genetic testing device we need and then we will leave,"
Lian Ze said immediately.
"The food you’ve raised?"
Lin Cheng swallowed and asked, he had recently watched some post-apocalyptic horror films in the Space and wondered if it was what he thought.
"You’ve figured it out,"
Shi Ran responded with a lowered head and a guarded expression.
"Yes, those boxes under the windowsill outside the door, they’re your homemade fermentation fertilizer, right? And that distillation device for water to the side, you made it yourself too? And... this,"
Lian Ze held up a piece of brownish-yellow feather he was holding and continued, "You’ve been raising at least plants and chickens here."
"So why did you find this place? Isn’t it okay for me to live here alone? I have hardly created a small ecosystem and why do you always ..."
Shi Ran suddenly clutched his head and burst into tears.
"..."
Lian Ze was a bit stunned; he didn’t think he had said anything that could have caused such a reaction.
"Mr. Shi, you really misunderstood us, like our friend just said, we only came looking for a device and would not touch any of your belongings if you wish to continue living here,"
Lu Hao explained, finding Shi Ran’s crying a bit too distressful.
The middle-aged man who was sobbing suddenly stopped, his expression incredulous as he asked, "You won’t take my chickens, the vegetables I’ve raised?"
Who wants to steal your chickens, our Space has more chickens than we can handle, huh? Lin Xiuyuan rolled his eyes, somewhat speechlessly.
"We come from Base S in the city, we don’t lack food,"
Su Xiangzhe added in a friendly manner, they didn’t seem like bad people, right?
"I don’t find your words believable at all..."
Shi Ran shook his head, clearly doubtful.
"Mr. Shi, regardless of what kind of people you’ve encountered before, we truly mean no harm, and we will leave once we have what we need,"
Lu Hao said sincerely as he looked at Shi Ran.
For some reason, seeing Lu Hao like that made Shi Ran remember the way these people had knocked on the door earlier; subconsciously, he nodded:
"We have the genetic testing equipment here, it’s upstairs. But I want to know why you need it?"
"My family member is now in a coma and might need it,"
Lian Ze said.
"And this Base S in the city that you talked about, what is it like? Is there really enough food there?"
Once Shi Ran had calmed down, he began asking various questions.
