Chapter 35 - 25 Revenge 1_2

"Sister, brother-in-law, I just knew,"

As soon as Gu Yanzhi and Song Zhao opened the bedroom door, they saw Gu Yanlin sitting on the living room sofa, dressed in the exact same attire. Looking at the two of them, he spoke in a ghostly voice.

Today, after Song Zhao mentioned Gu Yanqi, Gu Yanlin had a faint hunch in his heart that his sister was preparing to avenge their parents, and himself.

How could he be absent from such a matter? He was also eager to tear that entire family of beasts limb from limb, to grind their bones and scatter their ashes to the winds.

After dinner, he barely slept, keeping an ear out for any noises outside. He was right to do so.

Gu Yanzhi looked at Gu Yanlin, a complex surge of emotions rising in her heart. The task was too dangerous, and she did not want her brother involved. However, avenging their parents was also Gu Yanlin's right. Seeing the resolute look in Gu Yanlin's eyes, Gu Yanzhi knew that persuading him would be futile. Rather than having Gu Yanlin follow them secretly, it was better to act together.

"Let's go."

Gu Yanzhi carefully checked Gu Yanlin's outfit and handed him bulletproof and stab-proof clothing, insisting he dress in his room. Only when all vital parts were protected did they set out.

During the day, Song Zhao had found where Gu Yanqi currently lived, not too far from them, about a one-hour walk.

Inside the house, they always had the heating system on, so they hadn't felt much. As soon as they opened the door, the temperature was even colder than during the day. The three of them closed the door, wrapped their thick scarves tight, and quietly descended the stairs without alerting any of their neighbors.

The night was too dark to see the stairs clearly, so Gu Yanzhi pulled out night-vision goggles and put them on.

To avoid being traced, once out of the building, they walked a good distance before temporarily swapping their combat boots for ice skates. The cold air bit at their toes as they emerged from their boots, instinctively curling together.

The trio, wearing roller skates, glided effortlessly through the deserted, silent streets.

Their shadows flitted through the night, ghost-like in agility, their all-black attire blending seamlessly with the darkness. Only the white streaks left on the ice revealed that someone had passed.

Near their destination, they found a secluded place to change back into their combat boots.

Crouching low, they circled the outer wall of Gu Qiang's residence, finding their entry point.

In C city, all buildings not completely submerged under ice allowed entry either through windows, by breaking the glass, or by removing the windows altogether. Gu Qiang's home was no exception.

Song Zhao was the first to slip in, the faint landing sound drawing no attention. Once inside, Song Zhao realized there was one person guarding on either side of the window, both sleeping soundly against the wall.

He gestured to stop Gu Yanzhi, who had one foot half out the window frame, from coming in.

Song Zhao withdrew the knife strapped to his leg, silently moved beside one of the men, and with a swift motion, a spray of blood jetted out, splashing against the pristine wall. The man slumped to the ground, convulsed a few times, then breathed his last.

The noise of the body hitting the floor woke the other sleeper, who immediately stood up, only to collapse again, a dagger driving precisely into his heart. His eyes wide open in shock, he could not comprehend how he lost his life before he died.

After dispatching these two goons, Gu Yanzhi jumped in through the window.

Zhao moved beside the second victim, extracting the dagger from his heart. With the pull, fresh blood gushed out, mixing with the other man's.

Having done all this, Song Zhao, without a word, went to Gu Yanzhi's side. Gu Yanzhi embraced him soothingly, their hands locked tightly together.

From the moment they entered the building, Song Zhao's emotions were slightly off.

"I'm fine, I've avenged myself,"

"Our whole lives have changed. We're together now, and after tonight, they can't affect us anymore,"

Gu Yanzhi, leaning against Song Zhao, spoke softly, comforting him as well as herself.

Gu Yanzhi keenly understood that Song Zhao's current unusual emotional state stemmed entirely from her experiences in a past life.

"Cough,"

Gu Yanlin, upon arrival, saw the disarray—a bloodstained scene with two bodies—and the couple's deep embrace amongst it all, making him feel somewhat superfluous.
