Chapter 442: Chapter 226: Marriage Arrangements (Part 2)

Sang Wan instantly held her forehead, overwhelmed, and found herself caught between laughter and tears. Sang Yan had both parents alive and well, and she herself was a married woman; moreover, Sang Yan was of the same generation. Taking charge of Sang Yan’s marriage affairs was absurd and laughable. She had no idea what Mrs. Li was thinking!

"Mother!" Sang Yan was so mortified that her voice was thick with nasal congestion. Her eyes reddened, and she wished she could just disappear into a crack in the ground. How embarrassing! If she had known that her mother brought her here to discuss this matter, she would have never come even if it killed her! What is this supposed to be?

"Stop pulling at me and go say a few kind words to your cousin sister!" Mrs. Li, frustrated with Sang Yan’s lack of spirit, pushed her forward after shaking off her hand.

Sang Yan couldn’t bear it and, twisting her body, she got up and ran to a corner to stand with her back to them. She bit her lip, and tears uncontrollably cascaded down her cheeks.

"You useless girl!" Mrs. Li gnashed her teeth in fury, then hastily turned to Sang Wan with a forced smile: "Miss Wan, that’s just how Ayan is. She gets embarrassed over nothing. But since it’s just amongst family, what’s there to be embarrassed about? It’s a good thing it’s you, Miss Wan, who wouldn’t take it to heart! Miss Wan, I’m begging you to take care of this matter. Please help Ayan find a good family to marry into. If you do, I’ll be forever grateful for your great kindness!"

"Aunt," Sang Wan suppressed the surprise in her heart and pondered for a moment before saying, "Aunt, since ancient times marital affairs have always been decided by one’s parents. Both you and Uncle are hale and hearty, so why should the responsibility of my cousin sister’s marriage fall to me? If you don’t care, I must. If others learned of this, they would say that I am overstepping my bounds into my natal family! Aunt, I’m sorry, but I can’t help you with this. This concerns my cousin sister’s lifetime of happiness. How am I, someone who hasn’t lived many years, supposed to know how to judge people? That responsibility is too great; I cannot bear it! What’s more, as a young bride myself, how could I possibly go about inquiring into other families’ sons? Aunt, you’ve really put me in a difficult position! I can see that my cousin sister isn’t getting any younger. You should find her a good match. When the time comes, I’ll certainly send a generous gift to add to her dowry. What do you think of that?"

Upon hearing Sang Wan’s refusal, Mrs. Li’s burning heart suddenly cooled by half, and a surge of resentment and acidity rose within her. She blamed Sang Wan for lacking human kindness, for looking down on poor relatives once she had become prosperous and for not being willing to lend a hand, probably because she was afraid that her own future daughter-in-law might marry better and surpass her, kindling jealousy in her heart!

Mrs. Li wanted to say more, but when she heard Sang Wan mention personally sending a generous gift for Sang Yan’s dowry, the complaints that were on the tip of her tongue seemed to get stuck.

At this point, all she could ask for was Sang Wan’s help. If Sang Wan refused, what could she do? If she angered her further, and ended up without any dowry, wouldn’t it be a great loss? If Sang Wan really did provide a substantial amount of silver for her daughter’s dowry, enough to buy several hundred acres of fertile land, her daughter wouldn’t have to worry for the rest of her life!

Mrs. Li was hesitating internally when Sang Wan smiled and said: "Let’s just settle it then! It’s getting late, and tomorrow morning you’ll have to set off early, Aunt. You should rest now. Since you’ve come all this way, I don’t have much to give you, but I’ll have Liu Ya prepare some fabrics and a few boxes of rouge and cosmetic powder for my cousin sister to take home."

Mrs. Li hurriedly smiled in thanks: "That’s very kind of you! These past two years I’ve been worried about your sister’s dowry. With your assurance, I can rest easy. I wanted to match her with four hundred acres of fertile land, but unfortunately, I haven’t found anything suitable. How about you help with that, Miss Wan?" 𝗳𝚛𝗲𝕖𝚠𝚎𝚋𝗻𝗼𝕧𝗲𝐥.𝚌𝚘𝐦

Liu Ya rolled her eyes aside, thinking to herself that the second lady really had quite the nerve, asking straight away for four hundred acres of fertile land – that’s several thousand silver taels!

Sang Wan was also displeased, frowning as she said: "When the time comes, I’ll help make up for whatever Aunt is short of. By the way, how are the marriage arrangements for my eldest cousin sister going?"

It was their family business, and Sang Wan did not wish to interfere, but seeing Mrs. Li caring only for Sang Yan’s benefits with shameless brazenness and even calculating against her own self while utterly ignoring Sang Rou, it was somewhat unfair.

Mrs. Li’s face immediately showed a look of disgust, saying: "With her terrible temperament, which good family would want her? That worries me too! If someone is willing to take her, I’d be willing to pay them to marry her off at the earliest! I’ve stopped bothering with her matters long ago; doesn’t she have her father? I am alone and can’t take care of everything. Just Ayan is enough to worry about!"

"Aunt, that’s not right!" Sang Wan replied with a smile: "After all, she calls you mother. If you don’t take care of her affairs, who will? Uncle, being a man, doesn’t understand these things. You’ll have to concern yourself more with it! There is no logic in marrying off the younger daughter before the elder one in any family, right Aunt?"

Seeing Sang Wan evidently taking Sang Rou’s side, Mrs. Li’s heart immediately felt unpleasant. She muttered a vague agreement, and then, as if struck by a sudden thought, she slapped her forehead and said: "Oh dear, I almost forgot to tell you about a big issue!" Mrs. Li then exaggerated the story of Sang Wan’s last visit, when Sang Pingliang and Sang Rou plotted against Shi Fengju, and she boasted smugly, "That shameless girl was so delighted with her father’s words that her eyes were crinkled with laughter. I couldn’t stand her vixen look, so I scratched her face, leaving two bloody marks that are still visible! Miss Wan, you were kind enough to be concerned for others, but look, that heartless girl was scheming against you behind your back!"

Sang Wan was both shocked and angry, speechless for a moment. It seemed she had truly meddled in affairs where she shouldn’t have!

She believed that Mrs. Li wouldn’t deceive her about this matter, and the possibility of her Uncle doing such things was not out of the question. It turned out that the Aunt really did care about Sang Yan’s interests, without the intention of pushing her towards Sang Wan!
