Elder Lady Hu arrived in the afternoon and was taken to the Public Security Bureau as soon as she reached Feng County. However, during the interrogation process her demeanor remained calm, showing no signs of panic. When she heard about Lu Jiaxin’s incident, her face showed pity as she said that had she known something would happen, she would have dragged her along to stay at a relative’s house.
Captain Sun asked with a stern face, “Lu Jiaxin said she got off the train with you and was planning to return to Feng County with you. But when she wanted to stay at the hostel you wouldn’t allow it, even after she insisted on getting you a room as well. You forcibly took her away. When she screamed, you even covered her mouth.”
Elder Lady Hu immediately exclaimed her innocence, stating that these were all fabrications: “I got off the train just after her. I had a big package with me, containing food, clothing, and other heavy items. I moved slowly because the package was so heavy, and by the time I got off the train, that child was already out of sight.”
After saying this, she angrily added, “At the time, I even praised her for being a good child. I didn’t expect someone who looked so innocent to have such a malicious nature as to slander me by accusing me of abducting her?”
“My eldest grandson is a college student, he’ll get a job upon graduation and won’t have trouble finding a wife; My second grandson got married at the beginning of the year, and his wife is now seven months pregnant; My youngest grandson is only ten years old, still in elementary school. Tell me, why would I abduct her?”
...
The interrogation lasted over two hours, with Elder Lady Hu insisting that they went their separate ways as soon as they left the train station. They hadn’t found any fellow passengers to corroborate the story, and now, apart from Lu Jiaxin’s statement and the portrait, there was no other evidence.
Captain Sun said, “Leader, this old woman clearly came prepared; we don’t have solid evidence to convict her.”
Wu Hanping understood his meaning, “Do you think that if Lu Jiaxin confronts her, it might break her silence?”
As clever people themselves, they knew something wasn’t simple when they heard that Lu Jiaxin was scheduled to confront Elder Lady Hu at one in the morning. To them, anyone who commits a crime leaves clues; it’s just that the incident happened near the train station and in the middle of the night, which made the investigation particularly challenging. The greatest difficulty was the limited funds they had, so he thought it might be worth seeing if Lu Jiaxin’s approach would work. If it did, it would save a lot of trouble.
Wu Hanping nodded and said, “Then let them meet, and let’s hope for some results.”
Elder Lady Hu didn’t return alone this time; her youngest son Yang Jun came back with her. By evening, seeing that his mother hadn’t been released yet, he went to see Captain Sun. “To assist with your investigation, I purposely brought my mother back from Jin City. Now that you’ve finished questioning her, why haven’t you let her go home?”
Captain Sun said, “Your mother said she went straight to your aunt’s house after getting off the train and stayed there that night. We asked her what time she arrived, but she can’t remember, and we need to verify that.”
“How long will that take?”
“It’s too late now; we can only go to verify with your aunt in Ancient Capital tomorrow morning. If all goes well, she can go home by tomorrow noon.”
Yang Jun immediately toned down his manner, now that the reason seemed valid, “Captain Sun, my mother is elderly and not in good health. I’m worried that she can’t handle staying in the interrogation room. Could we do this, I’ll take her to stay in the hostel tonight, and I’ll bring her back here tomorrow?”
Captain Sun refused, saying it was against the rules, but he made a concession, “If you brought warmer clothes for her, I can help you take them in.”
After thanking Captain Sun, Yang Jun slipped him a pack of cigarettes, “My mother has never gone through something like this before; she’s been anxious these past days, and I hope you can look after her a bit.”
While Elder Lady Hu was being interrogated, Yang Jun also sought out some old classmates. The current crackdown was severe, and his classmates, having heard the news, dared not get involved. However, as old schoolmates, they still offered a word of advice; if his mother was innocent, she should avoid doing anything unnecessary, as the more she did, the more likely she would give others leverage against her.
Captain Sun accepted the cigarettes not only to reassure Yang Jun but also spoke encouraging words, “Comrade Yang, rest assured, we won’t indulge a bad person, nor will we wrongly accuse a good one. As soon as we verify your mother is wronged, we will release her immediately and will severely punish the false accuser.”
Yang Jun left with a heavy heart.
Turning around, Captain Sun handed over the pack of cigarettes, “Leader, he’s very anxious; he must be worried that Elder Lady Hu won’t hold up under questioning.”
He felt that Elder Lady Hu’s ability to stay composed was likely connected to Yang Jun. Maybe even the whole story was pre-crafted by Yang Jun. Besides, too much time had passed since the incident; if Lu Jiaxin had reported to the Public Security Bureau immediately after waking up, perhaps this case would have already been solved. The delay increased the difficulty of solving the case.
Just after eight o’clock in the evening, Lu Jiaxin arrived at the Public Security Bureau, accompanied by Big Uncle Lu and Lu Jiajie, among others.
Seeing her carrying a suitcase, Captain Sun reminded her, “Miss Lu, you cannot bring any items when you meet Elder Lady Hu.”
Lu Jiaxin immediately assured that she would not bring anything during the meeting, then made a request, “Captain Sun, could you arrange a room for me?”
Captain Sun thought she wanted to rest and led her to a room with just a bed, a long table, and a chair.
“This is where we usually sleep, it’s quite simple. Please make do with it.”
Lu Jiajie frowned upon seeing the bed. Others might not know, but he was very aware that his sister was a bit of a clean freak, which is why they always prepared serving chopsticks for her during meals.
Lu Jiaxin thought it was fine and thanked Captain Sun again. As long as she had a table and a chair to put on makeup, she didn’t mind if the bed was dirty or messy since she wasn’t going to sleep on it.
Big Uncle Lu and Lu Jiajie were arranged in a room next door. Once inside, Big Uncle Lu asked in a low voice, “Xinxin, what’s in this suitcase?”
This suitcase had been given to her by Lu Jiajie just before, so aside from Lu Jiaxin, only he knew what was inside.
Lu Jiajie answered that it contained makeup items, “Xinxin said she needed these things; I got a friend to borrow them from a cultural work group.”
Considering the items were borrowed and not purchased, Big Uncle Lu didn’t say anything further.
After showing people out, Lu Jiaxin began her makeup preparation. The quality of the cosmetic products wasn’t great, but under the circumstances, there was no room to be picky, so she made do with what she had.
Captain Sun didn’t go to sleep, as he wouldn’t be able to sleep back in the dormitory anyway. He forced himself to write up the crime summary he so disliked. After finishing, he checked his watch; it was half-past eleven.
He stepped out of his office and saw the light was still on in the room where Lu Jiaxin was. He was curious what kind of plan this young lady had up her sleeve, hoping it would indeed pry open Elder Lady Hu’s mouth.
