Uriel’s grin widened as he read the details of his evolution.
He snapped a finger and, from a spell circle, a rock appeared within the palm of his hands.
Feeling out the fabric of his now evolved core, he activated his talent. From the depths of his body, it felt like tendrils of himself reached out, wrapping around the rock.
Suddenly, he and the rock felt... one.
Its weight, shape, angles, aether contents, runic structure, layering and all else—everything flashed into his mind. It was as if he’d gotten a perfect reading of the rock.
It was as if he himself had created the rock itself.
Well, he had, but it would be more accurate to say that it felt like he had invented rocks as a whole. He understood every single inch of it.
He snapped a finger again, and the rock suddenly began to glow, its heat rising until it became as hot as a burning coal, hot enough to melt through wood and marble alike.
Yet Uriel barely felt it. It was hot, yes, but his shell protected him, the damage inconsequential.
"Finally!"
Finally not being a glass cannon truly was relieving.
’Now, for the branching core step, I’ll focus on—’
Uriel’s pupils constricted to pinholes and his aether primed in nothing but a thought.
His neck snapped upwards, his sensory circle activating as his sight pierced through the ceilings and stared at the skies of the settlement.
His eyes widened.
....
Amon was a young man.
A young man with ambition, endless amounts of it.
And today, his path would bloom.
Why?
Because he had finally saved enough to buy materials for his D Rank Evolution!
His days slaving at the horrible settlement’s butchery had paid off, and now, with all his sword lessons from the Gold Grade instructor his boss had paid for him, it was finally time!
Giddy and exploding with joy, he stood in line at the Nihil Shop, only one person ahead of him and a long line behind him, nearly flooding the streets.
He’d been in line for five hours already.
’Oh! If they still have that sale on, maybe I’ll be able to get a pure-blooded Sky-Borne Lizard!’
His eyes glimmered as his fantasies raged.
’And if I get that Dragon Gate method Thomus told me about... oh my...’ Amon nearly passed out from the excitement he felt.
’But if they don’t, I’ll still be happy with a—’
His thoughts paused.
’Why is it so quiet?’
The chatter that constantly drowned the town had suddenly died down to an eerie nothing and, worse still, the pitter-patter of rain had stopped.
It wasn’t raining anymore.
Confused and slightly afraid, Amon turned to look at the line behind him.
They all stared at the skies, eyes wide, full of despair.
He followed their gazes, his body trembling.
"..."
Flooded.
The sky was flooded with gigantic meteors, all covered in smouldering blood-red flames, directly falling towards them.
They were so numerous they almost seemed like stars, dotting the dark grey clouds above.
Horror consumed Amon.
He immediately turned away and took off, running as he screamed.
"RUN!"
His voice awoke the frozen crowd and they, too, got to their feet and started to run, but it was too late.
BANG!
The settlement was wiped out of existence.
...
It hurt.
All Amon could feel was pain.
He was under a heavy pile of rubble, a large stone pillar pressing against his body and a dozen metal rods piercing into his stomach.
As he breathed in, all he managed to take in was ash and dust, and all he could see was darkness.
His mind blinked in and out of consciousness, the pain awakening him only to become so intense he passed out again, forming a cycle of pure agony.
’I’m going to bleed out.’ That was the first thought he managed to form.
’I can’t die. I can’t die. I can’t die.’
Not before he reached ’it’. Not before he gave his life meaning.
Amon’s jaw tightened and his only remaining arm suddenly received an influx of power, his Spark burning itself to give him strength.
It would surely have consequences, but what greater consequence was there above death?
All he needed to do was live, and he’d find a solution.
With a groan, Amon pushed, tears welling up in his eyes as the pain intensified. His groan soon turned into a guttural roar of desperation.
BANG!
From his palm, a wave of potent force tore upwards, shattering all the rubble above him and flinging it into the distance.
With it, the metal rods tore out of his body, his broken form jetting with blood.
Crying, he pushed himself up to his feet, the last fumes of his burning Spark giving him the strength to do so.
’...’
The settlement was gone.
All that lay around him was destruction and mountains of rubble like the one he’d been under. It was dark; ash and soot filled the air, blocking all vision as flames raged, burning all things.
Cries of pain echoed. Some screamed for help, but he could also see blood—so much of it—seas of it, containing limbs, flesh, and bone, from children and the elderly alike.
It made him sick to his stomach.
He stared up at the skies, tears falling, but his eyes suddenly widened when he saw that... more meteors were appearing.
Another shower was coming.
Panic overflowed in his mind and he suddenly forgot all about the carnage around him. He looked around frantically, searching for a solution.
And he found it. Or at least, he hoped he had.
All across the broken expanse, he could see pillars of golden light that pierced into the skies. He saw people run into them, then vanish.
’If this is a game-like world...’
He didn’t think twice.
