Chapter Thirty-Six: What a Shameless Fellow
"Where exactly is the exit?" Twilight questioned the whistling Ariel with narrowed eyes.
His suspicion wasn't unfounded. They had been wandering the forest for hours, yet there was no exit in sight.
And whenever he asked Ariel, he would simply smile and say they were almost there. But right now, Twilight couldn't hold it in any longer.
For some reason, he felt that if he had searched for the exit alone, he would have made more progress rather than following Ariel, who seemed to know nothing.
"Haha, we're heading there right now, aren't we?" Ariel chuckled.
But Twilight could sense the nervousness beneath his laugh. Rolling his eyes, he said:
"No, we aren't. We've been walking in circles for hours."
Ariel stopped in his tracks, turning to Twilight with a dashing smile.
"You haven't been paying attention." He sighed before continuing:
"I've been trying to find the others. At night, this forest — no, the entire Deadlands — becomes endless. Magical beasts and Deadlings vanish. So this is the best time to come out for fresh air."
Twilight's eyes gleamed. The others? What did Ariel mean? And just the thought of an endless dead zone sent chills down his spine.
Just as he was about to press Ariel for more answers, footsteps echoed through the area, followed by a voice.
"Ariel, where is your association emblem?"
A young woman in a long black cloak emerged. Her deep blue eyes — the only visible part of her face beneath her veil — flashed dangerously.
Twilight's expression hardened as he observed the newcomers.
Were they the others Ariel spoke of? If so, why had he brought him here? Could it be that his judgment was wrong, and Ariel was an enemy who sought to harm him?
A strange feeling arose in his heart as he backed away, summoning his dark blade.
He assumed a battle stance, surveying the group before him.
Most were clad in battle armour, wielding various weapons.
As Twilight studied them, he noticed a raven emblem attached to their clothing.
'Is that what the blue-eyed lady was asking about?' Now that he thought about it, Ariel wasn't wearing any emblem.

Ariel chuckled nervously, scratching his head as his eyes darted around.
"Vice alliance leader, you know... fighting magical beasts is tough, and I didn't want my emblem tainted by their disgusting blood. So, I took it off." He spoke with forced confidence.
The blue-eyed woman, the so-called vice alliance leader, simply shook her head and directly exposed him.
"Stop lying, Ariel. At night, there are no dangers from magical beasts."
Ariel was momentarily speechless. He couldn't possibly tell her that he took his emblem off to avoid the people hunting his alliance, could he?
Cough. "Miss Vice Alliance Leader, I aspire to be famous throughout the Astral Realm, and dying here isn't part of my plan. So... so I had to take it off. Otherwise, this genius might perish before he gets his chance to shine."
Ariel sighed pitifully, his expression exaggerated.
The vice alliance leader of the Galaxy Wing Alliance laughed.
Then, her gaze shifted to Twilight, interest flickering in her deep blue eyes.
"Ariel, is he a newcomer? Don't tell me you've already rubbed your shamelessness off on him. Otherwise, where's his emblem if he's joined our association?"
"This..." Ariel hesitated, debating whether to speak the truth. Then, with an exasperated sigh, he said:
"He hasn't exactly joined us, but I still decided to help him. After all, this genius couldn't have bad records when I'm aiming to be number one by not helping him, hehe."
For a moment, everyone — including Twilight — had black lines on their faces.
'Just how much more shameless can this swordsman get?'
Twilight was about to interject when the vice alliance leader turned to him. Chuckling at his wariness, she said,
"Young man, we won't harm you. Although you haven't joined our association, we treat others like family. Unless, of course, they harm us first.
"However, if you want to leave this forest, you can follow us. Right now, I'm heading to meet the alliance leader. We'll be leaving this godforsaken place soon."
Twilight pondered for a moment before nodding.
Since they meant him no harm, following them didn't seem like a bad idea.
Trusting them outright wasn't wise, but they were his only way out of this endless forest. Surviving alone would be far more difficult than staying in a group.
They had said there were no magical beasts at night, but what ensured that? Who was to say that wouldn't change in an instant?
Twilight wouldn't gamble with his life. The lesser evil was his best option.
At least if these people turned on him, he had a chance of escaping.
But if something unknown threatened his survival, he had no confidence whatsoever.
And just like that, he joined their party as they resumed their journey through the endless forest.
