Alarms blared as the wyvern tore through reinforced walls, seeking the energy sources he could sense within. Storage units were ripped open, their precious contents consumed in seconds as Storm devoured core after core, the blue channels along his body glowing brighter with each one.

"He's absorbing them directly," Noah realized, watching through the ship's cameras as they approached. "Not just eating—he's integrating their energy."

"We need to land now," Sophie insisted. "Before the military reinforcements arrive."

Kelvin nodded, guiding their vessel toward a clear section of the landing pad. "I'm registering multiple approaching signatures. Heavy assault class. ETA four minutes."

The ship touched down. The trio disembarked quickly, Sophie grabbed ravager weapons and handed to the boys with her as they surveyed the devastation. The defense grid lay in ruins, ice covering most surfaces in beautiful but lethal formations.

Noah could sense Storm's location. "He's still in the storage facility. His hunger is... lessening. He's found what he needed."

"And what about our uninvited guest?" Sophie asked, scanning the area.

A bellowing roar of frustration drew their attention—the sound almost human despite its volume. Behind a collapsed section of wall, they found a man attempting to stand on shaking legs, his body bruised and bloodied. His left arm was a nightmarish amalgamation of human flesh and something else—gray, scaled, ending in wicked claws that seemed too large for his frame.

"Is that..." Kelvin began, eyes widening.

"Harbinger tissue," Noah said grimly, recognizing the distinctive appearance. Then his eyes narrowed, noticing subtle details he'd initially missed. "No, wait. This isn't self-grafted. It's more like... a transformation half undone."

The realization hit him with sudden clarity. S-rank military—only someone with that classification would have the energy reserves needed for such a profound metamorphosis.

The man's wild eyes found them, pupils dilated with adrenaline and pain. Blood trickled from his nose and ears—signs of neural strain from the forced transformation.

"Where is it?" he demanded, voice hoarse and unsteady. "Where's the dragon?"

Noah, Sophie, and Kelvin exchanged cautious glances, Noah's expression now more wary than before.

"You need medical attention," Sophie said carefully, hand resting on her sidearm.

The man staggered forward, his misshapen left arm dragging at his side. "That thing—what category is it? Nothing like it exists in any registry! No one's ever documented anything close to that power level!" His words came in an excited rush, eyes feverish with obsession.

"We're just academy students," Noah lied smoothly, studying the man's partially transformed limb with new understanding. "We were tracking an anomalous energy signal for a research project. We don't know what that creature was."

The man's eyes narrowed, suspicious despite his injuries. "Academy? Which one?"

"Twelve," Kelvin offered quickly.

"Academy Twelve? Do students even have clearance for this sector?" the man growled. "And students don't fly military-grade scout ships."

"It's modified civilian," Sophie countered. "Look, we need to get out of here. Military's inbound, and unless you have authorization to be here—"

"Darius Mercer," the man interrupted, a manic smile spreading across his face despite the blood staining his teeth. "Former military, S-rank. And I'm going to be the one who brings that beast down."

The S-rank confirmation solidified Noah's theory. A shapeshifter, and a powerful one. Someone who could potentially mimic even Storm's abilities given the right circumstances. The threat level had just increased exponentially.

Before any of them could respond, a deafening roar shook the ground beneath them. Storm emerged from the ruined facility, his hunger temporarily sated, the blue energy along his body pulsing with renewed vigor.

"Oh. My. God." Kelvin whispered, seeing Storm at full size for the first time with his own eyes rather than through cameras. "He's even more incredible up close! The scale patterning alone shows he's evolved for his electricity and cold fusion powers. And look at those energy channels—they're following perfect geometric progression along the wing membranes!"

"Kelvin," Sophie hissed. "Not the time!"

Darius's eyes widened with an almost religious fervor as he stared at Storm. "Perfect," he whispered. "Absolutely perfect."

Noah watched Darius closely, noting how the man's damaged arm seemed to subtly heal, a skill a certain alien specie possessed.

Storm's head swiveled toward them, star-bright eyes fixing on Noah. For a moment, something like recognition flickered in those alien orbs. The massive wyvern hesitated, wings half-extended.

Then military dropships appeared on the horizon, no more than two minutes away.

Storm's attention snapped to the new threat. With a contemptuous snort that frosted the air around his nostrils, he launched skyward, wings creating downdrafts strong enough to knock the humans off their feet.

In seconds, Storm was gone, disappearing into the storm clouds of his own making, continuing his hunt for energy across the landscape.

"We need to go," Noah said urgently, helping Sophie to her feet. "Military's going to have questions we don't want to answer."

"What about him?" Sophie asked, nodding toward Darius, who was still staring at the sky with unnerving intensity.

"We can't just leave—" Kelvin began.

A manic laugh interrupted him as Darius struggled to his feet. "A dragon," he repeated, seemingly to himself. "All those years on the Frontline, and I never saw anything like it. The guild's going to shit themselves when I bring back its core."

Noah stepped forward, deliberately blocking Darius's view of their ship. "You need medical help. The military will be here any second—"

"You three know something," Darius cut in, his good hand suddenly gripping Noah's collar with surprising strength. "No students just happen to be tracking a beast like that. What is it? Where did it come from?"

Noah met the man's fevered gaze steadily, acutely aware of what this S-rank shapeshifter might be capable of. "We don't know what it is. We picked up the energy signature after the lake incident and followed it here."

"Bullshit," Darius hissed, his grip tightening. "That thing made eye contact with you. It recognized you."

Sophie's weapon was suddenly pressed against Darius's temple. "Let him go now or I swear I'll be the first woman to carve a core crystal out of a man's heart!!"

The standoff lasted only seconds before military dropships roared overhead, searchlights sweeping the devastated complex.

"This isn't over," Darius promised, releasing Noah and stepping back. "I'm going to find that creature. And when I do..."

He didn't finish the threat. Instead, he turned and staggered away, disappearing behind the ruined facility with surprising speed despite his injuries—speed that confirmed Noah's suspicion that Darius was far more dangerous than he appeared.

"We need to go," Sophie insisted, pulling Noah toward their ship. "Now."

As they raced back to their vessel, Kelvin was still staring at the sky where Storm had vanished, his eyes wide with scientific wonder.

"The atmospheric manipulation is beyond anything I have seen an awakened individual even hope to do! Did you see how he created localized pressure differentials to generate that vertical lift? And the electromagnetic field it's generating—it's not just controlling the ice, it's actually altering weather patterns at a molecular level!" He fumbled with his datapad across his forearm, fingers flying across the screen.

"The energy conversion efficiency must be astronomical. No natural organism should be capable of that level of thermodynamic control unless—" his voice dropped to an awed whisper, "—unless it's consciously calculating each energy state transition. This isn't instinct; Storm is actively problem-solving through quantum physics!"

Sophie sighed, grabbing his arm to pull him along. "Yes, Kelvin. The lightning ice dragon is a math genius. Now move your ass before we all get court-martialed."

Noah cast one last look at the sky, worry etching deep lines across his face. Storm was growing stronger with every core he consumed. And now they had another problem—an S-rank shapeshifter with an unhealthy obsession with his companion. Someone who might have the power to mimic even Storm's enormous abilities.

Finding Storm had just become even more urgent.
