Chapter 86: Floating Candles

Marx walked toward the East Garden. From his location, he could see the five-layer cake placed at the center of the gazebo. He frowned when he saw a servant placing candles along the side of the small bridge where the celebrant was expected to walk later on.

With big strides, Marx approached the servant. "What do you think are you doing?" He asked angrily.

"Good evening, Sir. I was instructed to place the candles on the side of the bridge to the gazebo to create a dramatic effect."

Marx became furious. "Whose idea is this? Don’t you know that you are risking the life of the Princess? The design and the material of her gown will easily catch fire."

The servant was horrified when he realized it. "I am sorry, Sir. I am just a servant following instructions."

"Give me that." Marx took the candle from the servant and when he studied it closely, the candle was meant to float on the water.

"Put it in the water. This is a floating candle."

The servant hesitated. The man in front of him looked like one of the guests. However, he spoke with the authority and aura of a king. He obediently placed the candles on the water.

The candles flickered and the light was reflected on the water creating a dreamy effect.

"Who commanded you to place the candle on the bridge instead of the pond?" Marx asked sternly.

The servant hesitated for a moment. "It is the head maid, Sir." He answered while fidgeting. Did he land himself in trouble?

Prince Raquim also decided to get some fresh air when he heard Marx talking to the servant as if he was the king himself. He sat on a stone chair while watching the scene unfold before him.

He did not know who this man was. He was sent on training in the Albanian Desert, and a day after he came back, his father commanded him to attend Princess Amaya’s birthday party. He has no interest in this princess, however, after their dance, he found her suddenly interesting.

Raquim did not know the man who was talking to the servant. He was definitely not from Lireya or the neighboring countries. He was the last person who danced with Amaya so he must be a VIP.

They were far from him so he could not hear their conversation. He could deduce that the servant finally realized his mistake as he started to lower the candles to the pond.

"Who is this man? Why is he concerned with the First Princess? Why did the servant follow him obediently, despite knowing that he is just a guest?" Raquim pondered.

Soon a plump woman approached them and seemed to be scolding the servant. The servant pointed to Marx and explained something.

’Hmm, this is quite interesting.’

A few meters from Raquim, the head servant was fuming. "Didn’t I tell you to put the candles on the bridge and not on the water? Is it that difficult to understand?" 𝘧𝑟𝑒𝑒𝘸𝘦𝘣𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑒𝓁.𝘤𝘰𝓂

The servant trembled. "I apologize Madam. Sir here asked me to place the candle on the water instead of the bridge."

"He is just a guest. Who are you supposed to take your orders from? Hurry and put back the candles on the bridge. The Princess will soon be heading here for the blowing of the candles."

The servant kneeled and was about to scoop a candle from the water when a cold voice made the temperature drop.

"Don’t even think about it."

The plump woman was dumbfounded. She looked at Marx carefully. He looked familiar but she was pretty sure that he was just one of the guests.

"Excuse me, Sir. It is the Princess Consort who wanted the candles to be on the bridge."

Marx breathed deeply. "The pathway is very narrow. The princess is wearing a ball gown and the material will easily catch fire. Don’t tell me you want to burn the princess on her eighteenth birthday?"

The head maid suddenly realized that what the guest was saying is true. The hem of the princess’s gown will definitely swipe the candles while going through that narrow pathway. She shuddered.

"Thank you Sir for your kind reminder. I will explain to the Princess Consort." The head maid bowed slightly to Marx before leaving.

"So it is the Princess Consort’s idea." Marx was thinking deeply. ’Is this just a case of ignorance or there is a scheme against Amaya?’ He pursed his lips.

Marx decided to go back to the banquet hall. The Royal Family was now taking the family picture. King Duncan was an upright man. He did not want to have a lot of concubines so he only have a few children. Prince Ibarra followed his example and just have two concubines and thus the crown prince just have two sons who can fight for the throne.

There were not too many people on the stage so the photographer finished taking photos in no time.

Before the cutting of the cake and the blowing of candles, Princess Danella played a beautiful song for her sister. The people were amazed at her piano skills. After her performance, a thunderous applause filled the banquet hall. The audience was smitten by Danella and they praised her for being talented at such a young age.

Prince Ibarra and Princess Consort Nelida were proud of their daughter. Ibarra looked at Amaya with regret in his eyes. He wanted Amaya to learn musical skills too but wasn’t able to hire a teacher for her prior to her birthday. He took note of that and will find a teacher for her after the celebration.

Amaya was looking at the grand piano with longing in her eyes. She wanted to learn musical instruments too. She promised that she will practice after her birthday.

"Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. We would like everybody to go to the East Garden. The Princess will slice her cake and blow the candles over there.

Princess Nelida looked down to hide the smug look on her face.
