Chapter 274: Was It An Accident?

Amaya was in a daze. A scene from her distant past seemed to overlap with the scene happening before her where a few logs rolled toward their car.

The thundering sound as the multitude of hooves drew nearer and nearer ...

The feel of the ground that trembled while a little girl stood frozen in the path of the stampede...

Then a strong pair of hands suddenly lifted her and carried her to safety.

Princess Amaya blinked when she felt a warm big hand covering her right hand. Her knuckles turned white as she clutched the steering wheel tightly.

"Aya, step on break and change to first gear." Marx’s commanding voice sounded anxious.

Amaya stepped hard on the break and shifted the gear to the lowest.

Dave screamed at the back when the inertia pushed him forward. It was only when he noticed that there was an accident in front of them.

Marx turned the steering wheel to the right. The jeep jerked to the outermost lane of the highway. He turned the steering wheel a few degrees to the left.

"Step on the gas pedal until it touches the floor," Marx shouted urgently while he helped Amaya steady the steering wheel. His movement was fast.

"Change your gear!"

Amaya obediently followed Marx’s instruction and in no time they were overtaking the truck. She held her breath when they passed by the truck. There were only a few centimeters of distance between the two vehicles.

One wrong move and they would either crash on the truck or fall out of the highway.

Marx was leaning toward Amaya and both of his hands covered hers while gripping the steering wheel. He kept the steering wheel steady.

Amaya heaved a sigh of relief when they successfully overtook the truck.

When they were passing the truck, Marx looked at the driver and he was furious when he saw what the driver was doing.

"Damn It!" Marx cursed.

The man was looking straight ahead, a white wire was connected to his ear, and judging by the way he was tapping on the steering wheel, the driver was not aware that his cargo already littered the highway.

A few cars behind them were not as lucky. The logs hit them before they could even think of how to get out of the mess.

Unfortunately, two of those cars belonged to Amaya’’s. They were the guards assigned to them.

"Go block his path."

Amaya nodded and shifted lanes. At the same time, Marx pressed hard on the middle of the steering wheel, and the blaring sound of the horn was heard.

The truck driver realized that he was being forced to stop. He happened to look through the rearview mirror and he was horrified but what he saw.

Some of the logs that fell off his trailer were still rolling on the highway. A black car was hit and the front bumper fell off. It was a Maybach.

The driver trembled. He tried to step on the break but because he was trembling all over, his foot missed the break and instead landed on the gas pedal.

"O Shit! Aya step on the gas!" Marx almost panicked when he saw the truck behind them accelerate.

Even before Marx opened his mouth, Amaya already stepped on the gas and shifted the gear to six giving her car and the truck a safe distance.

After the driver realized his mistake, he brought his car to the side to park. He was praying that nobody got hurt.

Amaya slowed down.

She took a side glance at the man seated cooly beside her. Marx was so calm one would not think that he narrowly escaped a serious accident.

She checked the man in the back seat and noticed that Dave looked pale and in a daze.

"Are you okay, Dave? You looked awful."

Marx looked back. He frowned when he saw that Dave was indeed very pale. Then he snorted.

"Coward. I can’t believe you’re scared to death." 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝙚𝔀𝒆𝒃𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝒐𝒎

Dave did not mind Marx’s sarcasm. He was trying to calm his nerves after such a heart-wrenching experience.

"You two are indeed a match. You are not afraid of death and you both drive like crazy."

Marx chuckled, then his head turned left to study Amaya.

"Are you alright? You did a good job getting us out of danger. I can’t believe you just started driving two months ago."

"You helped me out. You were the one who steered." Amaya replied.

She looked at the side mirror and noticed that there was no car following them.

"Do you think we should go back? The guards’ cars are nowhere to be seen."

"The logs are still blocking their way. Don’t worry about them. They know what to do. They are supposed to protect us but they were not able to."

"Marx don’t be cruel to the guards. If the Princess did not drive like she was in a car race, then two of those vehicles should have been ahead of us and blocked the logs." Dave suddenly came alive in the back seat.

"They must be dead scared by now. They are left behind." Dave’s voice has still a tremor in it. It was obvious that he had not gotten over his nervousness.

"Do you think what happened earlier is an accident?" Amaya spoke when Marx did not react to Dave’s words.

Marx looked at Amaya briefly before focusing his gaze ahead. He tried to recall if there was something unusual with the truck but could not remember anything.

"The Eagle Highway Patrol will investigate. They are quick and accurate. We will know once the investigation is out." Dave who was a local in Lireya said with pride.

"Why did you ask, Aya? Did you notice something was amiss?" Marx asked curiously.

"It is just a hunch. At that time before the logs fell, I had a bad feeling. But it might be an accident. It couldn’t be targeting us, right? No one knows that we would be behind that truck at that time." Amaya’s gaze remained focused on the highway while she spoke.

Marx was silent for a long time. He was contemplating while fiddling with his watch. He pressed a tiny knob beside the watch’s crown and the upper part of the watch loosened. He flipped it open and a round screen hidden under the watch appeared.

Marx tapped a series of codes and a beeping sound was heard.

"Aya, stop the car right now!"
