Chapter 243: Strange Creatures

"The emperor closed his eyes when he saw how those men were brutally violated before their bodies were shredded into pieces by the monster’s claws. Then the monster feasted on the mangled bodies.

The monster was gloating. It intentionally performed the massacre in front of the camera like it knew there was a camera there. After he was done, he went in front of the camera, roared, and bared its fangs, then everything went black.

The emperor was silent for a long time.

"Emperor, yesterday we received a signal from the transmitter at the foot of Mount Paraiso. Someone entered the mountain."

The third elder pushed the play button and a video appeared on the screen showing three people riding on horses. The man and woman looked valiant as they rode two beautiful white horses while the third person was on a brown horse.

"It is the Princess of Lireya. What do we do Emperor? Do we send people to rescue them?" The tenth elder spoke.

"Idiot, a night has already passed. Do you think they survived in there? Why did you not notify me that someone entered the mountain yesterday?" the man in the red hood shouted and smashed the armrest of his throne with his hand.

The elders were silent. They did not report it because they wanted to know if the three people would survive. They did not care who they were.

"Send the latest models of our drone over there along with highly trained military experts." The emperor said in a loud voice that scared everyone in the room. He was worried. Those were very capable people. What if they get hold of the secrets of Mount Paraiso?

His thoughts drifted to the brutality of what he had seen in the video earlier. If only they could control those mutated animals, they could be the perfect killing machines. He mourned the death of his genius scientist. If only he did not die, then he should have a way to alter the DNA of those animals. He couldn’t find anyone like him in the entire Ra-Iya.

"Number Five, any update on what I asked you previously?"

The fifth elder trembled when his name was mentioned. "Emperor, we have given out the examination and we got the top ten highest scorers. We transferred them to Ra-Iya Science and Technology University to further nurture their talent."

"Hmm. Assign them a project of doing simple genome editing."

"Yes, Emperor!" the fifth elder answered full of respect. He was happy that his task was simple and not risky.

The ten people who were referred to as elders were not really old people. They were only in their late thirties but they were excellent in their fields and they earned the trust of the emperor.

...

At Mount Paraiso, the higher the horses climbed, the thinner the air was. Marx checked their altitude and it was already 9,999 meters above sea level.

Marx tapped something on his wristwatch and Amaya suddenly found that it was easier to breathe and the pressure in her ear lessened.

"The goggles can regulate the surrounding air and relieve the pressure," Marx explained.

"Did you invent these things?" Amaya asked. She looked at Marx with eyes full of administration.

"I created the design and we have a technical team who built the prototype. I just give suggestions." Marx did not want to steal the credit of his technical team.

At 9:00 a.m., they thought that they finally reached the summit of Mount Paraiso but to their surprise, the horses continued to tread through a treacherous ridge around half a kilometer long. The path was only wide enough for two people to walk side by side. Both sides of the slopes were steep. It was as if a god descended from heaven and formed an earthen bridge. If one looked down, he could only see an endless line of green broken by jagged black rocks below. If the horses made a small mistake, they would surely be plunged to their deaths

"So Mount Paraiso is a twin peak." Amaya blurted out. She did not notice this when she studied the mountain from the hunting ground.

"The summit is covered by a thick cloud so one would think that the one behind us is the crest of Mount Paraiso."

While the two people in front of him were conversing normally, Vasquez was very silent at the back. His muscular body was very tense. He dared not look down but focused his gaze ahead so fear would not overcome him. He was not afraid of heights but their situation right now would make even the most valiant heroes scared.

The horses they captured have a mind of their own. Why did they bring them to this desolate place?

"Boss, what kind of horses have we captured? Instead of us leading them, why are we the ones being led at the nose by them?" Vasquez said in an aggrieved tone. "Who the heck would like to pass this hellish path? Even if I don’t fear heights, I think I have an acrophobia now."

Amaya laughed heartily.

Vasquez hugged the neck of his horse tightly when he felt that the ridge was starting to rise.

"Indeed these horses are not ordinary ones. I am wondering if they are bringing us to the place they were born." Marx said calmly. He was not perturbed by the current situation that they were in.

After thirty minutes, they successfully crossed the ridge. To Vasquez, it was like an eternity had passed. He clasped his hands together and looked up to the sky as if thanking someone for still being alive.

"Ah, finally. The torturous ride is over."

Marx glanced at him coldly. He was a mercenary and highly trained guard. How can he lose his composure like this?

Vasquez realized his blunder. He unclasped his hands and straightened his back. His expression also became cold and sharp.

The area they were standing was only wide enough to accommodate six horses. The shape was a concave. It was like the god who built the earthen bridge, carved out a small space from the impregnable wall of the mountain for his landing.

Marx and Amaya studied their surroundings. They can only move forward or go back. They could not turn left or right.

"Why did you bring us here, Apollo?" Marx patted the horse and fed it a sugar cube.

Apollo neighed. He moved forward and hit the thick wall of vines.
