Raised From The Wild-Chapter 192: The Human Nature
"What’s that?" The two women in the van sounded frantic. The first van has left ahead of them escorted by several black cars. Only their van was left. They were delayed a bit because Amaya took the time to study her surroundings.
"Stay low!" The royal guard beside her used his palm to push her down the seat. His voice was calm and there was no sound of panic.
"Are we being ambushed?" Shanaya asked in a panic.
"Our apologies for what happened just now, Princess Amaya and Lady Shanaya. Those are the worthless citizens who do nothing but created trouble. They are already apprehended." The guard muttered under his breath.
Amaya did not hear the gunshots anymore, so she lifted her head to look through the window. She saw some people rounding three men in khaki clothes.
"Are those the men who shot us earlier?" Amaya asked.
"Yes, Princess, they are!"
"Why are they targeting us?"
"They are seeking attention for themselves. We have secured the area but somehow they managed to mingle with our uniformed ground personnel."
Amaya wanted to go down from the car to take a look but the guard sitting beside her prevented her from doing so.
"Let it be known that the King of Ra-iya is a devil reincarnate." A loud voice resonated and penetrated the inside of the van. He was speaking in the local dialect but Lireyan and Ra-Iyan dialects are very similar Amaya was able to understand what the man was shouting at the top of his voice.
"He has done a lot of bad things. He has killed many and harmed many young girls. He..." The man was not able to finish his words when another man in civilian clothes stuffed a gun into his mouth and pulled the trigger without blinking.
Amaya was shocked. She saw the man fall on the grass and blood started to seep from his mouth and back.
Shanaya who was also in the same van did not see anything as she was seated in the corner and her eyes closed. She was still scared of the shooting earlier.
Amaya shifted her eyes to the guard seated beside her.
"Pretend that you did not see anything." He whispered.
The driver in front saw the guard’s action in the mirror. He frowned. ’Why is this guard acting too intimate with the Princess?’
Amaya closed her eyes. She was shaken by what she saw. She had seen brutal attacks between animals, predator killing their prey who were helpless, but those were wild animals! What she saw was a human harming a seemingly harmless human being just because of what he said.
Humans were no different from animals after all. The strong trampled on the weak.
The van started moving. Amaya looked back to the spot of the brawl earlier but she did not see the body. Only the pool of blood was left.
’So, they clean up so fast.’ she uttered in her heart.
The royal guard covered her hand with his big one. He squeezed it gently to comfort her.
The van was traveling fast. Amaya hoped that it can slow down a bit so she can enjoy the scenery.
The houses that they passed were made from concrete but they were quite small. A few were even made of bamboo and coconut logs. Amaya concluded that Lireya was more prosperous than Ra-Iya.
Amaya checked her cell phone and find their location. Soon they will enter the capital.
When they entered the capital, Amaya started seeing tall glass buildings and different car models on the highway. The houses were getting bigger and grander.
Soon, traffic became heavy as the road they were passing became congested. The driver kept muttering under his breath. Amaya was happy because she can observe her surroundings. There were a few peddlers on the street who knocked on the car windows and were offering their wares.
The van was traveling at snail-pace.
The traffic light turned red. The driver slammed his hand on the steering wheel and cursed under his breath. They were running late.
Amaya was looking at the car beside theirs. A girl around ten years old was holding a baby in her hand and was knocking on the window of the sedan. The woman in the passenger seat was looking straight ahead and treated the girl with the baby, like air.
’What an apathetic look.’ Amaya breathed deeply. Her heart ached. She took some money from her bag and opened the window. She called the girl over and handed her 100 dollar bill.
"Don’t do that, Princess." The driver said in a loud voice which startled her.
Princess Amaya looked at him and frowned.
"Don’t do what?" Amaya was confused.
Before the driver could answer, several children in rags with faces covered with dirt swarmed at their van. The driver hurriedly raised and locked the car window.
Amaya could not understand how so many children suddenly appeared from nowhere. Where did they come from?
"That’s the reason why you should not be giving them money. If you give one, then what about the others? They will pester you to death." The driver said bitterly.
"Aren’t there orphanages or welfare homes where they can be taken care of?"
"There are too many of them, Princess." The driver sounded a little bit frustrated.
"How come I haven’t encountered them in Lireya? And also when I was in Usturia?" Amaya was just like a child asking a lot of questions.
"Because Lireya is a rich country and Usturia is even richer." The driver’s voice has a tinge of regret. He was unlucky to live in a poor country.
Amaya looked at the children who were reprimanded by the policeman. What drive these people to face the dangers of getting hit by a car? She looked at her guard, her eyes have lots of questions.
"They have mouths to feed and they need to fill their stomachs." The guard said casually.
The traffic light turned green.
Amaya looked back and a young boy was staring at her with pitiful eyes. Something pierced Amaya’s heart. She has to do something for these children.
"Does the government do something for them? I mean, the government can build more orphanages and welfare homes, right?
The driver remained mum. He did not want to answer her question.
