Chapter 157: Woman He Loves

Stephane was sizing up Marx. His gaze was cold and penetrating. Marx was staring back in an equally hard manner.

Stephane suddenly found Marx’s gaze locked on something beyond him. His frosty expression turned gentle. He looked back and saw Amaya emerge from the dressing room.

He walked toward Marx and spoke softly in his ear. "It looked like there is a woman that you like. Now, you will know how painful it is to lose a woman you love." Stephane walked past Marx.

"Don’t even think about it. Hell will break loose if you touch even a strand of her hair." Marx’s voice was dangerously threatening.

Stephane continued walking and did not look back. He shrugged his shoulders and lifted both hands in the air.

"What happened? You looked gloomy."

Marx smiled at her but it was a bit forced. "It is nothing. Just a squabble between old best friends." He said as he continued to follow Stephane with his gaze.

Amaya walked slowly beside Marx as they exited the pool area.

"So, you and Teacher Stephane used to be best friends? What happened? Why did you have a fallout?"

Marx sighed. "Stephane and I were classmates from high school. We also went to the same university. He was born in Uropa but he basically grew up in Usturia. One day, Stephane invited his girlfriend to a club. I was also at that club. Stephane has drunk a lot and so I volunteered to drive them home." Marx paused as if the next words that he will utter would hurt him deeply.

"I was crossing an intersection when a car coming from the right hit the back part of the car. The impact of the collision was too great that Stacey, Stephane’s girlfriend died on the spot." Marx’s gaze turned gloomy.

Stephane blamed me for the death and he stopped talking to me after that.

"Why would he blame you? Wasn’t it an accident?"

"Yes, it was. But Stephane chose not to believe it. Even when the police investigation proved that it was an accident he still would not accept it."

Amaya thought for a long time. Her friends have never abandoned her. "Animals are still the most loyal friends. They will not kick you when you are already down."

Marx nodded. He agreed with what Amaya said. Men’s hearts are most vicious. Animals are more simple.

"You have no more events, right? David said that you can take the pups. They can already survive on their own."

Amaya’s face lit up. "That’s great! Are we going to go there?"

"Yes."

They walked side by side as they headed to the main gate of the school where a black Maybach was already waiting for them.

They went directly to the zoo’s hospital. Amaya went to check on Khalil. "How are you, buddy?"

The tiger who has fully recovered, stood from the corner and went to Amaya and rubbed his body on her legs. Amaya patted his head and rubbed her abdomen. "You should go back and accompany the others." She said. Her treatment of the animals was the same as she was treating Julienne.

After they sent back Khalil to the enclosure, her animals surrounded her and greeted her enthusiastically. They were happy to have Khalil back.

Amaya checked on Kong. He looked very happy with his mate. Amaya named the female ape ’Ning’.

Amaya and Marx took the three baby wolves and headed to the Anishton estate. She promised to give the two pups to Grandpa Earl and the other one to Yohan.

"They are still so young. Are they going to survive on their own?" Marx glanced at the three cubs who were lying on Amaya’s lap. He was envious of the three pups.

The old earl was tending to his garden when Amaya and Marx arrived at the Anishton castle.

"Grandpa, how are you?" Amaya’s warm greetings entered the Earl’s hearing. He stood and turned around to greet them. His eyes widened when he saw what was on her hand.

Amaya set down the cage she was carrying. The wolves were still small and they resembled a puppy.

The Earl opened the cage and scooped both of them and brought them to his chest. The young wolves seemed to like the earl. He let them down and let them run around the garden.

"Thank you for bringing them over Amaya. I am truly grateful."

"Don’t mention it, Grandpa. I am the one who is thankful because these pups need someone to take care of them. I know that they found a good home."

Marx and Amaya did not stay long. They did not check on the construction site but headed back to Asteria Palace. Before they entered the car, Amaya looked back at the two mountains behind her. From her location, she could not see the damage done by the explosion because it was covered by Mount Daya.

"I am so busy this week I forgot about Mount Ibra. Do you know how much the explosion has damaged the mountain?" Amaya asked as she squinted her eyes to look beyond Mount Daya.

Marx pulled Amaya under a big tree to hide from the heat of the sun. He took out his cell phone and showed her aerial photos of the mountain. The most damage was at the base where most of the trees were burnt and a lot of the animals died. The upper part not burnt at all.

Amaya’s heart ached when she saw the photos. It will take a long time for that area to recover. While studying the photo, a thought came to her.

"Maybe I should take this opportunity. Since the foot of the mountain was already cleared, I will cultivate different kinds of herbs there including the Milagrosa." Amaya’s eyes lit with excitement. She could turn a tragedy into something good.

"Okay, I will help you with it. I will ask Dave to hire workers to clear the area. But we have to wait for a few more days as the Lireyan military are still scouring the mountain to ensure that there are no traps and no mines were left behind."

Amaya hugged Marx. The stern CEO hugged her back as he sniffed the fragrance of her hair.

Amaya lifted her head and gazed into two ocean-blue orbs. Their faces were too near that she could see her reflection in his pupils.

"You are so good to me, Marx. Thank you." She tip-toed and landed a swift kiss on the corner of his mouth.

It was broad daylight and they were standing in the open. But Marx did not care at all. He held the back of Amaya’s head with one hand while his other hand slipped behind her small waist. He lowered his head and covered her lips with his. He kissed her deeply with so much passion that Amaya was panting when her released her.

He ruffled her hair and said in a husky voice. "Silly girl, you are my woman. I will do everything to help you."

Amaya’s face turned beet red. Before she can say anything, Marx pulled her towards the car.

"It is time to go back." He led her to the car.

Marx opened the car door for her and protected her head when she get inside. Marx entered from the other side of the car. He was thankful that Amaya did not insist on driving this time.

"Marx, I think I can bring back my friend to Mount Daya next week. What do you think?"

"The clearing operation in Mount Ibra should be done at that time. Let us bring them there."

It was already late afternoon when the black Maybach entered the gates of the Asteria palace. Amaya looked for the young prince and she found him in the garden at the North Wing together with the queen and Ibarra’s two daughters from the concubine.

"Good afternoon, Grandma!" Amaya approached her grandmother and kissed her on the forehead. A beautiful smile appeared on Queen Lucinda’s wrinkled face. Her health has improved a lot and she no longer needed the wheelchair. Her mood has also become better especially when she spent them with her younger grandchildren.

Amaya greeted her younger cousins Camilla and Riyana by patting their heads. Both sisters smiled at her and hugged her briefly. Ever since she came, the sisters became more lively. Even Riyana who was an introvert and always withdrawn has become talkative and outgoing. Their elder ’sister’ has given them confidence. They were no longer the neglected ’princesses’ in the palace.

Amaya squatted in front of Yohan. He has gotten fatter and his face was round and cute.

"Big Sister, look! I am getting bigger. My arms have grown muscles." Yohan’s voice sounded cute and lovable. He flexed his arms to show off her muscles.

Amaya laughed and pinched Yohan’s plump cheek. There was no trace of the frail-looking boy she saw on the first day she arrived.

Princess Nelida who was looking out from her balcony on the second floor saw the harmonious scene of five people in the garden. Her gaze darkened as she clasped the railings of the balcony.
