Chapter 130: Was It An Assassination Attempt?

Marx and Amaya exchanged glances. Could it be one of them?

Dave was lost in thought. Could it be that someone wanted him dead because of an important research he was working on?

The three of them looked at each other then they looked back at the soldier who speculated about an assassination plot.

"Whatever happened here should not come out, otherwise you will be in danger. For these two soldiers who were injured, let us just say that they got attacked by wild animals. Do you understand?" Marx spoke in a serious tone.

"Enrico, Ricardo, did you hear that? You should not tell anyone about the ’abnormality’ of tonight’s attack." Dave emphasized Marx’s warning.

"We understand, Dave. Rest assured that our lips are sealed. Additionally, this is the last time that we go on a mountain exploration with you." Enrico said. His voice trembled a little when he recalled that he was almost bitten by a wolf if not for a soldier who was quick to shot it with his gun.

Dave looked at them in surprise.

"We treasure our lives. We just realized how fragile it is and how dangerous this kind of job is." Ricardo explained.

"All right. Just remember not to mention what happened here to anyone."

"How do we get these two injured soldiers out of here?" Amaya glanced at the two soldiers lying on the ground. Someone took the initiative to place sleeping bags under them to make them more comfortable.

"I contacted our base. They will send a helicopter once the sun appears." the lieutenant said.

Amaya looked at the injured tiger with concern in her eyes. She tugged the sleeve of Marx’s shirt. "I don’t think Khalil can walk back with his injury. It will open his wound. Can he be transported in the helicopter as well?"

"Can you arrange for two helicopters? The other one should be a cargo helicopter." Marx asked the lieutenant.

The soldier nodded then he took out a satellite phone from his backpack and punched a series of number on it.

"Shouldn’t we move farther away from here? What if the bombs planted in the bodies of these beasts are set on a timer?" Julienne spoke after a long time. Everyone was surprised to hear what she said. She made sense.

Amaya looked at Julienne strangely. Her gut feeling told her that Julienne was not as simple as she thought. She was well versed in guns, she has a strong physique and did not have any difficulty climbing mountains even when the terrain was difficult.

The soldiers carried the bonfire and the firewood and moved them to a clearing closer to the river bank behind two huge boulders. The boulders should be able to protect them from the splatter of flesh and blood should the animals really explode.

They also moved the tents but did not moved the three remaining bonfires as they were about to be snuffed out.

They waited for day break and to them, it was the longest wait. They took the time to discuss how many animals have each of them killed.

Julienne’s pistol has only six bullets. She killed two wolves and a mutt.

The squad that accompanied them that day consisted of six soldiers plus the squad leader which was the lieutenant. All in all, they killed a total of sixty animals per their calculation.

Enrico and Ricardo were not gun users and they managed to kill a total of three. Enrico did not want to admit that when a mutt pounced on him, he used up all six bullets just to kill it. Ricardo fared better. He used four bullets to kill two wolves.

Valdez and Drake were professional guards and both were sharp shooters. They killed a total of twelve.

Dave did not count how many he killed. He just knew that he used up all the bullets in his pistol so he must have killed six.

Marx used a GLOCK 48 hand gun with a magazine capacity of ten bullets. He used up all bullets and reloaded but did not used the second round.

Amaya killed six and incapacitated two. She realized that her arrows were not as fast and as fatal as the bullets. A boar almost reached her because even with four arrows, two on the eyes and the other two on the shoulders, she did not manage to kill the boar. She took note to ask Marx to teach her how to use guns in the future.

They were surprised when they tallied their kills and reached a hundred. Amaya felt sad. They killed so many wild animals.

In the flickering light of the bonfire, Marx saw the guilt and the sadness in Amaya’s eyes. He pulled her and nestled her head on his chest. He then smoothened her hair with his hand.

"Don’t feel guilty. They are out to kill us. If we did not kill them, then were are the ones who were killed."

"I don’t get it. It is an animal’s instinct that when it felt threatened it will retreat, just like the pack of wolves last time. We only killed one of their own. They felt that they cannot win so they retreated. These breed of animals were different. It seemed as if they were...." Amaya paused and was trying to think of the right words to use.

"Programmed to kill." Marx finished it for her. He continued to run his finger through her hair.

Amaya, appreciated Marx’s comforting act. She nuzzled into his neck and smelt his scent which made her relax.

Dave glanced at Marx who was leaning against a boulder with Amaya on his arms. He thought it was a beautiful scene and took a picture.

...

Somewhere in a room filled with big monitors, twelve men wearing black hoods were replaying the images that were captured earlier. The video was not good because the light was not sufficient. The faces of the people who were fighting the wild beasts were blurry but they were able to make out a woman who used bows and arrows to kill. A boar almost got to her but it suddenly fell and the shot was coming from the side and not captured by the camera.

The door opened. A tall muscular man, around 183 centimeters and wearing a red hood came in.

"There are only a few of them and yet they killed so many. Are you an idiot? Why did you not recall the animals when you see that there are too many casualties?" He roared and everyone trembled in fear.
