Quills: the Rise of the Northern Matriarch-Chapter 94: The Boundaries (3)
Chapter 94 - The Boundaries (3)
"I believe women and men should all have peaceful means to protect themselves. Like our Peacekeepers. They only need to render the disorderly unconscious. They only sustain fall injuries when they are subdued. There is no need for excessive force." Solina answered passionately. She believed that there was something really wrong with society. Like the lower class needing to earn merit points to become parents. She did agree with the psychological evaluations. It would have prevented her birth or at least Hera being involved with raising children at all.
"The Peacekeeper program was thought up by all of us. Solina has never used her Matriarch tools to violently punish anyone in our organisation." Kehye added proudly.
"She has never physically hurt one of us either." Jun said. He and Kehye were Solina's first three spouses. Hannon chose to stay behind today. He had faced Hera a few times himself and had some terrible trauma. He looked at Kai's face, relieved that he was learning the truth.
Kai did not know that his Mother felt as passionately as him. He kept his reactions guarded, but he was relieved that Solina would be healthy to be around Kelly. He would have to be there for every visit, until he was sure. He was ready to introduce her to the children. Facilitating a meeting with a counsellor was a brilliant idea. He gently squeezed Nora's hand. Her suggestion started a chain reaction that ended up in a meaningful change in his mother, but not only that Setton. It also changed something inside of Kai's wounded soul. He felt warmth from his parents, instead of a guilty pity. They all looked more alive, brighter and seemed to be coping well from the damage that Hera left in her wake.
"Well I am sure Liem, Talan, Kadir and Cerez have their hands full. Would you like to come and meet Kelly and the other Children?" Kai said to his parental group, feeling excited to have a family, almost like the child inside of him was reawakening. Solina had settled down a fair bit. He saw a relieved look come across the whole group's face. He looked at Janel's face to see if he had any objections. Janel noticed and gave him a smile. He looked to Nora who was already gazing at him happily. He was so thankful. He started to stand and the group followed suit. Nora took the lead bringing them further into their living space. The sound of activity and glee. The group walked to the big play room. Kelly was playing with some soft toys on the floor. When she saw her Mother she got excited. Her sister Fiona was patiently playing with her.
"Mommy, Look. Hug" Fiona chattered excitedly as the group approached her. Nora reached down and picked her up.
"Hello Fiona." Nora said and she kissed her on the cheek. Kelly looked up from the floor with a wet drooling smile and waved. Kai picked her up from the floor. Kehye gasped, she was adorable. She had beautiful blue eyes and a dusting of freckles on her face, but the rest looked like Solina's infant pictures.. The freckles and blue eyes looked so striking in contrast to her dark skin and tightly curled hair.
"She is so beautiful. What does her name mean?" Kehye said as he recovered from the sight of her.
"All of the Children have Northern names. Kelly means 'Battle Maiden' in Northerner. Fierce women fought alongside men in battle in Nora's culture." Kai said with a smile.
"Kelly is a tough girl. When she falls, she does not cry. She teethed and weaned so well. " Kai said as he tickled her little belly. Nora noticed that Kai had Kehye's big handsome smile. The whole group looked enchanted with her.
"This is Fiona, her name means 'Vine', Ivy means 'fidelity', it is also a climbing vine plant, Sirona means 'goddess of healing' and Astra means 'from the stars'." Nora explained as she pointed around the room. The newest member of clan Quill was confirmed a week ago. She did not know what she was going to name this child yet. She was relieved to be carrying a singular pregnancy.
"Why do you think you have had so many girls, are you cured?" Solina asked Nora.
"We are trying to figure that out. The likelihood even of a Northerner like me, to have a run of girls is really low. Janel, have you made any progress in figuring out why this is happening?" Nora explained and then passed the baton to her friend who had been studying her.
"Yes. The answer goes back to how her tribe was so isolated. They never fell to the initial virus, they never interbred with a genetically modified person or outer gestated person. So they did not experience the problems that our society did when they bred." Janel explained.
"You would be stunned to believe that before the endemic that altered our way of life our people were predisposed to have more female children. It looks like Nora inherited two sets of alleles from each set of parents that predisposed her to have more female offspring. Making it a dominant trait. Each of her spouses carries the trait except for Kai. Liem, Kadir, Talan and Cerez all have a eighty five percent chance of having a female child with Nora. Kai has a fifty percent chance." Janel explained. Solina looked shocked. The children in this room would all have great potential, but would face so many dangers.

"That is why we have such security measures set in our complex. However I fear that might not keep the governments at bay." Kai said, with worry in his voice. "We created our own software and high security, but as you know in time everything falls to brute force. No matter how thick the wall or how tough you make a fortress, if the right enemy with enough power comes along, the best preparations fail." Kai said solemnly. Solina nodded looking at her son.
"Anyone that attacks a Setton family would pay dearly for that mistake. They must know that they would be starting war with their own military and peacekeeping force if they thought of harming our heir." Solina said, as she cast a look around the nursery and to Nora.
"You are expecting again right? Please tell me if it is the Hudai's heir?" Solina asked.
"How did you guess?" Nora asked, she was shocked that she could already tell.
"I can smell it, the Setton have powerful noses. Do the Hudai know yet? If that child is born female, we could form more of a powerful alliance." Solina finished.
"Talan is nervous about talking to his maternal family. Lara and his father are more awful than Hera," Kai said.
"That perverted narcissist would not be able to stand for anything to happen to her heir. I am sure I could tolerate her in his stead to form an alliance when the child is born. Your software is impressive. Very impressive. Keep working on that. That might be very necessary in the future," Solina said, as if she was reading in the room. Nora was impressed with how astute she was at connecting the dots.
"Of course, you have the full support of Setton. We will abide and not disclose any of our thoughts about this and quietly build our allegiances with other helpful clans like the Leyti, Nobru, Kin, Pennir and others." Solina said as she pointed at each of her spouses in the room.
