Chapter 116: Sharp Tongue, Soft Heart

Sophia headed upstairs and immediately noticed something off. Her clothes were gone.

"Lucas, where are my clothes?"

"What clothes?" he replied, way too casually.

"The ones I changed out of."

The ones covered in blood — clothes she definitely did not want anymore.

"Maybe Mrs. Wilson took them to wash."

Sophia nodded, changed into fresh clothes, and walked toward the door.

"Where are you going?"

"The hospital. Whatever else happened, Andrew got hurt protecting me."

Lucas nodded and, without warning, scooped her right off the floor.

"Lucas! What are you doing?!"

He set her on the table, leaning in close, eyes deep and serious. "Don’t run off alone again like that."

Sophia couldn’t help laughing. "I won’t. I’m not stupid — I do learn."

"Really? Because I think you missed something today."

She blinked. "What?"

He pointed at his face. "Bare minimum, someone should be thanking me properly for rushing in to save her life."

She snorted. "Save me? Lucas, do you actually believe that? I saved you. If I hadn’t cut the ropes while stalling him, you’d be kneeling on gravel right now. I saved myself — and you. And you’re out here trying to steal credit?"

"And what if I had knelt? It would’ve still been for you."

"Mr. Hilton, don’t rewrite history. I never asked you to kneel for me."

Lucas pinched the bridge of his nose, visibly suffering. He could dominate the boardroom, the military, and the stock market — but this woman? Completely unbeatable.

Sophia smirked. "What’s wrong? Out of comebacks? Giving up already?"

"You are infuriating," he grumbled. "Fine. Next time you run off alone and get kidnapped, I won’t come."

Of course he would. He’d burn the world before letting someone touch her. But he needed to say it — a man deserved a little ego comfort.

Sophia watched him turn to leave... then caught his hand.

Lucas froze. Turned.

A warm touch brushed his lips — soft, quick, but real.

"Thank you," she whispered.

Quiet. Uncertain. Rare. A piece of her she hardly ever showed.

Lucas’s heart clenched. Hearing gratitude from her — it felt like being handed a diamond.

"I’ll take you to the hospital."

Sophia gasped dramatically. "Wait — just one kiss and suddenly you need to chauffeur me personally? Aren’t you being a little too eager?"

Lucas stared at her like she was his greatest trial in life. "Do you want the ride or not?"

She lifted her chin proudly. "Since Mr. Hilton is insisting so sincerely, I suppose I should give you the honor."

He shot her a look full of silent exasperation — then lifted her again, carrying her downstairs.

Once there, he even knelt to put her shoes on. And when he saw the delicate anklet wrapped around her ankle, his lips curved.

She’d never taken it off — not even when they’d misunderstood and hurt each other.

That shackle he left her with... she wore willingly.

"Stop staring," she said, kicking her foot lightly. "There’s a man waiting in the hospital, and if we’re late, someone will call me ungrateful."

Lucas tightened his hold and moved even faster.

Hospital.

Susan glared at Andrew lying in the bed, face twisted with disappointment.

"Tell me again — why on earth did you try to save her?"

She’d been complaining for what felt like hours. Andrew, already exhausted, finally snapped.

"Can you stop talking for one minute? We’re in a hospital. Do you plan to follow me here every day just to nag me to death?"

"Andrew, what’s that supposed to mean?" Susan barked. "Look around. Is anyone here taking care of you except me?"

She shifted in her chair and slammed the half-peeled apple down on the table.

"We’ve been married for years, and you actually said you’d hand everything over to Sophia."

"That’s enough. Watch your tone — this is a hospital. I’m not arguing with you in here. Leave. I want to sleep."

Susan’s eyes went wide in disbelief as anger flared in her chest.

"Leave? Are you serious? Look at yourself — who else is here by your side? You want me to go? Fine! I’ll walk out, and I’ll NEVER come back!"

"Have you talked enough?" Andrew shot back. "Olivia isn’t here either, is she? She’s been spoiled rotten by you since she was a kid. Decides to become an actress and disappears without a word! Something happens and she just runs off abroad. It’s been almost half a month — ANY news from her? Susan, she turned out like this because you never once disciplined her! She doesn’t respect anyone — not even me! Even if she comes back, I will no longer acknowledge her as my daughter."

Susan’s brows shot up. "Oh, so I gave you a daughter and suddenly that’s my fault? If YOU hadn’t been messing around outside, how would Sophia even exist?! She’s nothing but trouble!

"And don’t forget — she’s that fox-spirit woman’s child! Do you think I don’t remember how Aurora bewitched you? You were so dizzy in love you couldn’t tell north from south!"

"Enough! Shut up!" Andrew roared. "Aurora was better than you could ever dream of being!"

Susan jumped to her feet. "EXCUSE me? Better than me?!"

She laughed bitterly.

"You’re a fool! She played you like a puppet! You don’t even know that Sophia was never—"

"Oh? Talking about me again?"

Sophia’s cool voice cut through the room like a blade. She walked in slowly, leaning against the wall, arms folded, gaze ice-sharp.

Susan froze — panic flashing across her face. She’d almost spilled too much.

"Susan," Sophia said flatly, "don’t stop. I’d love to hear what else I am in that mouth of yours."

Andrew’s face darkened.

"I’m warning you, Susan — this is the last time. Sophia is my daughter. You WILL treat her like your own. If I hear you slander her or her mother again, don’t blame me for what happens next."

Susan’s jaw clenched so tight her teeth nearly cracked. She grabbed the apple and hurled it at Andrew.

"Fine! I’M DONE TAKING CARE OF YOU!"

She snatched her purse and stormed out.

Sophia watched her back disappear through the doorway, then turned her gaze to Andrew — unreadable, steady, cold.

Susan only had one daughter. If that daughter didn’t hurry home... one day Sophia might really replace her.

Susan would never allow that. 𝚏𝗿𝗲𝐞𝐰𝚎𝕓𝐧𝚘𝘃𝗲𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝕞

Sophia pulled out her phone and dialed Olivia’s number — the one that had been "out of service" for days.

This time, it connected.

A beat of silence. Then—

"...Olivia?"
