Psychic Overlord-Chapter 66: Esper Title
Chapter 66: Esper Title
Kaizer was silent for a long while, and Dean Rochester used this time to savor his tea in quietude, allowing the young man to think. Dean Rochester had a high opinion of Kaizer and knew that, as a telepath, he must have experienced many difficulties growing up being exposed to the minds of others.
His grandfather, Gerald, had been like Kaizer during their youth—silent and reclusive, very anti-social. He, William Rochester, had rather been very prideful and arrogant, unable to tolerate Gerald, who was also rated to be S-class and always competing with him.
After a few fights and a few life-and-death adventures, the two grew up, warmed up to each other, and changed their ways—Gerald becoming more lively and William becoming more humble as well as mature.
Kaizer was still at the stage Gerald had been at back then, so he still had a lot to learn, and thanks to Gerald, Dean Rochester knew exactly what to teach him. This special ability of endless growth was a surprise, but it did not change the underlying truths that the young man needed to comprehend, and this was one of them.
Kaizer breathed out slowly and closed his eyes, clearing his mind. "Thank you, Mentor William."
Dean Rochester put his cup down and smiled. "No more Grandpa?"
Kaizer smiled lightly. "I still have to show my respect."
The Dean chuckled knowledgeably. "Alright, I understand it’s still a bit too early for us to be all chummy. You chose to trust me, and I will invest everything I have in you, treating you and your sister as my own grandkids."
Dean Rochester opened his desk and took out a box, pushing it towards Kaizer and opening it to face the young man. "Here you go, a set of protective items suitable for you."
Kaizer glanced into the box and saw a neat stack of talismans with colored borders, two bottles of pellets that were red and white in color, and a vial of golden liquid that shimmered lightly.
Dean Rochester smiled and touched the talismans. "You are a well-read young man, so you know about the oriental occupation of cultivators, right? While it might be a bit far-fetched, it is true that many Chinese-born espers possess some unique powers that have transcended typical grading."
"These talismans are produced by Daoming Corporation, a Semi-Esper company that contracts espers with auxiliary powers to create goods or provide services using their powers. The person who made them had the special ability to place spells into special materials that can be activated remotely and are of impeccable quality."
Kaizer saw that the stack had talismans with red borders, green borders, yellow borders, as well as two with white borders and finally one with a black border.
"The red ones summon fireballs to strike opponents. The green ones can heal anyone they are cast upon, restoring most injuries. The yellow ones can create a small shield that surrounds your body and can withstand both physical and elemental damage for up to 10 minutes, but it has a threshold," the Dean began to explain as he lifted one of each type as he referenced their abilities.
The Dean’s expression became slightly more serious as he held the two white ones. "These two are a bit special; their purpose is to purify. They can cleanse any special curse or power that is less physical and more spiritual that isn’t within the scope of traditional healing."
Dean Rochester then held up the black one, which actually glowed in his hands. "This is a custom talisman I used my connections with the Daoming Corporation to order. It works in tandem with my power, which has two effects. One is that it will put you into the void of space for protection and then teleport you anywhere up to 1 kilometer away, then send a beacon to me that I can use to reach your side."
"As for what situation and how to use these talismans, I won’t tell you the obvious; you are smart enough to know their value and their optimal utility." The Dean said as he put them back in an arranged pattern.
The Dean then touched the pellets. "These are also all-purpose medications developed by Ferrian Pharmaceuticals, also a Semi-Esper Corporation. If you are curious, Semi-Esper means that they serve both espers and non-espers, with different products for either side."
"They obviously aren’t as magical as the talismans, but they can be used in conjunction with any method to speed up your recovery, providing stability. You can only take one every hour, though, so keep that in mind lest you mistakenly overdose."
Dean Rochester put the pellets down and then lifted up the small vial. "This is your most precious tool, even more than the Black Talisman. This is the Golden Elixir, made from the sap of the Tree of Life. As you can imagine, its effects transcend everything else, able to bring almost everything but a corpse back to full health instantly."
"Of course, its preciousness is transcendent and even the Esper Academy has a limited quota per year. I only have personal stock due to my status as number one, so I can strong-arm them for more. Use it wisely." Dean Rochester concluded, closing the box and leaving it to Kaizer.
Kaizer was touched, because he could tell that these items were something the Dean had stored for a long time, only bringing them out now because, as he said, Kaizer’s option to trust him made him take the young man as his own grandson.
To that end, Kaizer took the box solemnly. "Thank you, Mentor William. I will not let you down."
Dean Rochester shook his head with a wry smile. "It’s not possible for you to fail given what I know about you. The only question is how greatly you will surpass the basic requirements, and that is something I am greatly looking forward to."
"Do you have any descendants of your own?" Kaizer asked curiously.
Dean Rochester coughed. "...quite a few. As a man with great strength and power, I met countless beauties throughout my life, some irresistible. Naturally, things happened and offspring were born."
"...How many?" Kaizer asked softly.
"Seven sons, four daughters, all of whom I have acknowledged orthodoxly from their birth and cared for them. As for grandkids, I have around 23, and only one of them is around your age. I’ll introduce you to them sometime." Dean Rochester answered dryly.
Kaizer’s lips twitched. His mentor had built up his own harem after his travels, and it was likely that those women were not nobodies, but likely top-tier women on the level of Madam Sylvia in the esper world.
At least, he wasn’t the type to hit and run...
"Alright, I have already registered your details into the Esper Commission, so you can set out whenever you are ready." Dean Rochester said as he clasped his fingers together under his chin.
Kaizer was about to get up when he remembered something. "Right, I heard from the others that when an esper is about to head out on their first mission, they will be given a name that acts like a title or a codename for them to the rest of the world."
Dean Rochester slapped his forehead. "Right, that. Because of the news you gave me, this matter slipped my mind, so it’s good you brought it up. Yes, as is normal, the mentor chooses the name for their Special Echelon student within the academy."
Kaizer was curious. "Have you chosen mine? If so, what is it?"
Dean Rochester smirked. "Of course, I could not have registered your details as a participant without having first decided on your esper name. As for the name itself, it is something I specially chose for you after thinking about your nature and your purpose in the esper world."
"As the future strongest esper, the name must be grand enough to inspire wonder and majesty in the hearts of those who hear of your reputation, just like the Reaper of the past. Also, given your nature and the type of power you have, your method of suppression is different, so it requires something that simply presents your modus operandi."
Dean Rochester clapped his hands. "In light of that, your esper name now and forevermore shall be just one word, but this one word is enough."
With a finger, Dean Rochester pointed at Kaizer, his smile fading slightly. "Kaizer Lunin, the Overlord!"
