Chapter 437: Chapter 436_1

Glades Horne lowered his head, his gaze eagerly sweeping to the bottom of the report. The results showed a single fetus.

He had thought Julia would have twins, he mused, feeling a flicker of disappointment that it was a single pregnancy. But then again, a single baby is better, less strenuous for her. He recalled hearing how taxing carrying twins could be for a pregnant woman; many expectant mothers of multiples suffered from severe edema in the later stages, some even finding it difficult to walk. Julia’s morning sickness already pains me deeply; twins would surely make things even harder for her.

As this thought settled, his initial disappointment was instantly swept away by a wave of joy.

"Master Glades, your wife is carrying a single baby, very healthy and developing normally," the doctor explained with a faint smile.

Glades Horne suppressed the excitement and joy welling up in his heart. He gave the doctor a cool glance and said indifferently, "Thank you, Doctor." Then, he took Julia’s hand and said tenderly, "Let’s go home."

Julia allowed him to lead her away. Mila Anderson, seeing the couple’s intimate and affectionate demeanor, headed towards a different exit on the floor below. She had driven herself and didn’t need to squeeze into one car with her sons.

"It’s still early," Julia said, though her mind was preoccupied with her sister-in-law, Adele. Since returning home yesterday, Adele’s loss of appetite has been obvious. Her heart must be in utter turmoil right now.

She understood how Adele felt.

Adele came from such a privileged background and had always been pampered. She had never been in love before; although she yearned for romance, her standards for a boyfriend were understandably high. With five such outstanding older brothers, how could her expectations not be lofty? Yet, out of nowhere, before she could even savor the sweetness of a new romance, she’s facing the prospect of motherhood, not even knowing who the father is. Anyone in her shoes would be heartbroken and completely overwhelmed.

And to compound her distress, Adele refused to let her family know, confiding only in Julia, her sister-in-law.

Her mother-in-law is currently focused entirely on my pregnancy, while the matriarch is completely preoccupied with Marcel Horne. The men in the family wouldn’t be observant enough to notice the subtle changes in Adele, which means I’m currently the only person Adele can confide in and rely on.

Before they left home that morning, Julia had noticed the dark circles under Adele’s eyes and had felt a pang of sadness. She had wanted to ask, but Adele had shaken her head pleadingly. Because everyone else was present, Julia could only helplessly suppress her concern.

"Is there anything important at the company today?" Glades Horne asked after they descended the stairs and exited the hospital. He ushered her into the car, his tall frame following as he settled beside her. The moment he closed the car door, he instructed the bodyguards to drive. Turning his head, he fixed a sharp, penetrating gaze on Julia Bluen.

Perhaps it was because she was keeping things from him that Julia feared his sharp gaze at that moment. In the past, his unpredictable eyes always frightened me. She averted her gaze slightly, forcing a natural, light smile. "Can’t I visit the company even if there isn’t anything important going on?"

Glades Horne blinked, a fleeting glint in the depths of his eyes, as swift as a shooting star.

Suddenly, his large hand captured her chin, a gesture he had rarely made towards her lately. Gripping her chin, he held her face steady. His handsome face drew closer, his overwhelming presence washing over her like a tidal wave. Before Julia Bluen could react, his husky voice, accompanied by his deep, pool-like gaze, reached her ears, "Is it because there’s someone at the company you can’t stop worrying about?"

Julia was forced to meet his gaze for a full minute.

"What do you think?" she parried, appearing much calmer than before.

"What’s wrong with Adele?"

Glades Horne’s gaze intensified, his ardent, serious, and sharp look burning her face, instantly escalating the pressure she felt.

This man... Julia sighed internally. To say he’s fickle is an understatement; chameleon is more apt. He changes so unexpectedly, in ways that are hard to fathom. Fortunately, I’m not the same person I used to be.

"Adele is your sister. What trouble do you think she could be in?" It’s so unfair that I, her sister-in-law, am constantly worried while her own brother seems so detached, she thought. I should test if he’s genuinely concerned about his sister.

"Julia." Glades Horne’s fingers on her chin gentled, his touch now a soft caress sending ripples of sensation over her. His warm lips landed softly on her cheek, full of seductive intent. His deep eyes smoldered with passion, and his husky voice resonated with a captivating magnetism. His voice had always been pleasant, matching his good background and handsome appearance. Even his voice is so pleasing; it’s as if he’s monopolized all the best qualities, she thought. "You, ah, you’re getting more and more cunning."

"Well, I am your wife," Julia said, her face slightly flushed. One is influenced by the company one keeps. He’s inscrutable, so naturally, I’ve been affected too.

"Adele... is she pregnant?"

As someone with experience, Glades Horne could still guess what was different about his sister.

By then, the relationship between his sister and his beloved wife had completely transformed from what it was before, a change that would have shocked anyone who knew them previously. It seemed Adele now trusted only Julia. Their sister-in-law relationship was harmonious; they were like family, like friends. He was very happy about that. Nothing could be kept hidden from him.

Leaning into his embrace, Julia Bluen sighed heavily in her heart. We’re both pregnant, yet our experiences are vastly different. My own mood, treatment, and circumstances contrast completely with those of my younger sister-in-law. I’m joyful, uplifted by the thought of becoming a mother, eagerly anticipating the arrival of my and Glades Horne’s child—a symbol of their love—and a future filled with hope. Adele’s path to motherhood, however, is fraught with trepidation and bewilderment. If she decides to keep the baby, how will her future unfold? Being pregnant out of wedlock, especially having lost her virginity under such circumstances, would undoubtedly lead to rampant speculation. Some people with twisted minds would inevitably assume the worst—that Adele had been violated by multiple attackers, and that’s why she couldn’t identify the father.

One couldn’t assume the world was full of kind people who would sympathize with her plight. There were far too many people who delighted in kicking others when they were down.
