Pokemon: The Gameboy Effect-Chapter 362: Shiny?
John approached the door between thunder and lightning, his heart racing with anticipation.
"What Pokemon could it be this time?" he muttered, walking in with barely contained impatience.
The light shifted around him, and John found himself once again in that ethereal space between thunder and lightning constructed by ancient power. The illumination was as bright as day, but different from before, pure white instead of the usual electric blue.
In the center of the crackling energy field, a large feline Pokemon stood with perfect poise.
This was a Pokemon nearly half John’s height, covered in pristine white fur where there should have been yellow. Black skin showed through at the waist, abdomen, feet, and shoulders, while distinctive saffron-colored markings adorned its chest and hands. Most striking was the saffron tuft on its forehead and the long, scarf-like ponytail of fur extending from between its shoulders.
The name and level floated above its head in glowing text.
[Zeraora LV72]
" A level 72 Zeraora..." John breathed, studying the legendary carefully. But something was wrong with the coloring.
"I remember Zeraora should have yellow fur. Why is this one different?" John suddenly had the urge to light a cigarette, his hands trembling slightly.
There was only one explanation, and the realization hit him like a freight train.
"It’s a shiny Zeraora!"
"Holy shit..." John exhaled slowly, the words barely a whisper.
A legendary Pokemon, and a shiny variant at that! The odds were astronomical, somewhere around 1 in 230,000. It wasn’t just like winning five million in the lottery; it was like buying ten lottery tickets and hitting the jackpot on every single one.
"This time, I don’t have Togepi by my side, which means I’m fighting with my own mediocre luck," John thought grimly. Without his luck-boosting partner, how much grinding would it have taken to encounter a shiny Zeraora?
"I have to consider whether this might be my only chance in this lifetime."
John clenched his fists tightly. After all the time he’d already invested, facing such a perfectly leveled, perfectly rare Pokemon, if he failed to catch it now, he might as well quit on the spot.
Standing in the center of the lightning field, Zeraora opened its eyes and fixed John with an emotionless stare. White bolts of electricity danced across its body, the same pure white current he’d noticed in the office lighting earlier.
"White lightning... I’ll have to research what type that is later," John mused, stepping forward with determination.
Time to fight!
Three Pokeballs flew through the air in perfect formation.
"Greninja, Gardevoir, Gengar, let’s go!"
Greninja burst forward with explosive speed, water cascading from its body as it ran. The water collapsed and reformed into a massive shuriken on its back as it took position in front of John.
Gardevoir erupted in multicolored light, transforming like a magical girl into its Mega Evolution, now draped in an elegant black gown.
"Gengar~" Gengar covered its mouth with a mischievous snicker, waving its hands to summon concealing fog around itself.
The legendary had awakened!
A cold gleam flashed in Zeraora’s eyes as it bared its fangs in a feral grin, fierce as a hunting tiger. It crouched low, touched one foot to the ground, and thunder exploded around it!
In the blink of an eye, Zeraora materialized as a streak of white lightning.
Clenching its right fist, white sparks rioted around it, but these weren’t ordinary electric sparks. Instead of sharp, crackling energy, this power spread outward in twisted, plasma-like tendrils.
Wreathed in white thunder, Zeraora threw a devastating punch directly at John.
"Plasma Fists?" John recognized Zeraora’s signature move.
After experiencing Regieleki’s overwhelming speed, Zeraora felt fast but not impossibly so. Still dangerous, but manageable.
"Role Play!"
Greninja stepped protectively in front of John, somehow producing a black hat from nowhere and placing it on its head before meeting Zeraora’s fist head-on.
BOOM!
SIZZLE!!
Greninja was engulfed in countless tendrils of distorted white plasma, but unlike the agony of Regieleki’s attacks, this time it actually smiled.
Shock flickered across Zeraora’s furious expression. Its ultimate technique had landed perfectly, so why wasn’t it working?
The answer was elegantly simple. Role Play had transformed Greninja’s ability into Zeraora’s own ability.
Unfortunately for the legendary, Zeraora only possessed one ability: "Volt Absorb."
[Volt Absorb: A Pokemon with this ability is immune to Electric-type moves. When hit by an Electric-type attack, it recovers 25% of its maximum HP.]
So what if it was a legendary Pokemon’s exclusive move? As long as it was Electric-type, Greninja could absorb it completely!
Instead of pain, Greninja felt a steady stream of power flowing into its body, restoring its strength.
"Ultimate Water Shuriken!" John raised his hand dramatically.
"Let me show you something special!"
Greninja spun around and drew its massive shuriken, enlarging it further while coating it in golden energy. The spiral Aura Sphere technique was woven into the attack with Lock-On for perfect accuracy, then hurled directly at Zeraora.
Zeraora’s reaction was lightning-fast!
The moment the enhanced shuriken launched, it pushed off with tremendous force, retreating dozens of meters instantly. With a casual wave of its hand, seven pure white Electro Balls materialized and launched in response.
BOOM!
The Ultimate Water Shuriken collided with the Electro Balls and exploded in mid-air. But a second later, the Spiral Aura Sphere component burst through the smoke, continuing its relentless pursuit of Zeraora!
Zeraora hadn’t anticipated the follow-up attack, but its exceptional speed allowed for an immediate response. It transformed into white lightning, running sideways to avoid the incoming projectile.
However, Aura Sphere had natural homing capabilities.
At the same moment, Gengar’s figure suddenly materialized directly in front of Zeraora’s escape route.
The grinning purple ghost launched a barrage of Shadow Balls at point-blank range.
Mid-dodge, Zeraora suddenly felt its body become several times heavier.
Without realizing it, the legendary had entered a strange dimensional space.
This space was called "Trick Room."
In this reversed environment, Pokemon that were originally slow became faster, while naturally fast Pokemon were dramatically slowed down.
Due to Zeraora’s immense power, Mega Gardevoir’s Trick Room couldn’t completely suppress it or make John’s team faster than the legendary. But the speed differential was significantly reduced, making the battle far more manageable.
BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!
Both Aura Sphere and Shadow Ball found their mark, and the explosion was inevitable.
"The difference between legendary Pokemon and regular ones comes down to base stats," John analyzed while the smoke cleared. "The higher the level, the more pronounced the gap becomes. With a 12-level difference, the power disparity between Regieleki and this Zeraora is like night and day!"
John had wanted to use Trick Room against Regieleki as well, but the level gap had been too enormous for the technique to make any meaningful impact.
Suddenly, a flash of white light filled John’s vision, and he found himself teleported several feet into the air.
Looking down, he saw Zeraora’s fist slam into the ground where he’d been standing, white sparks erupting from the impact crater.
"Well, legendary Pokemon definitely shouldn’t be underestimated," John muttered, touching his chest with relief. If he hadn’t reacted in time and taken that punch directly, the encounter would have ended immediately.
But...
"It seems like I can actually keep up with its movements this time," John said, glancing at Mega Gardevoir.
"Garde!" Mega Gardevoir’s entire body was tense with concentration, her elegant gown fluttering in the electric wind.
"Then this should be completely manageable," John grinned, raising his hand and pressing downward in a commanding gesture.
"Psychic!"
