Chapter 98: Chapter 98 Plotting And Scheming

SOPHIA’S POV

Stewart Manor was beautiful in the way old money always was.

The place had perfectly manicured lawns, stone architecture that had stood for generations, and an iron gate that screamed "keep out" to anyone who didn’t belong.

I parked near the main entrance and grabbed the gift George had prepared. It was heavy. It was probably some expensive vase or piece of art.

The front door opened before I could knock. A maid in uniform greeted me and led me through the house to a lovely sitting room. And that’s when my day got worse.

Damien was there, sitting in an armchair and beside him was Tiffany. She was wearing a soft pink dress that made her look innocent and sweet.

They looked like a couple.

My wolf whimpered. I felt the mate bond pulling painfully in my chest. I ignored it.

"Sophia!" Tiffany’s voice was high. "I didn’t know you’d be here."

"Neither did I," I said flatly. I looked at Damien. He looked uncomfortable.

I looked around and saw her.

Simon’s mother – Helena - was propped up on pillows. She looked pale. Her silver hair was perfectly styled. Even though she was just recovering from a brain surgery, she was wearing full makeup and jewelry.

Wow...

"Mrs. Stone," I said politely, walking over to set the gift on the side table. "This is from George. He wanted to congratulate you on your recovery but couldn’t make it himself due to his knee."

Helena glared at me. "How thoughtful of George. Though I’m surprised he sent you instead of someone from the family."

Her words hit their mark, but I didn’t react. "I’m happy to help however I can."

"Are you?" Helena’s smile was thin. "That’s not what I’ve heard. Simon tells me you’ve been running around with that doctor. The one who operated on me. Is that true?"

My hands clenched at my sides. "Lance is a friend and colleague."

"A friend." Helena laughed. "Is that what young women call their lovers these days?."

I felt my wolf growling inside me but I controlled myself.

Not here. Not now.

Helena shifted on her chaise, wincing slightly. "I hear this doctor has been spending quite a bit of time with Sophia. That doesn’t sound like ’just friends’ to me."

My wolf snarled. I felt her pushing at my control. The disrespect was too much. This woman whose life Lance had just saved was now using him as ammunition to attack me.

"You’re right," I said "Lance and I aren’t just friends. We’re colleagues who respect each other. We’re two people who understand what it’s like to be discarded by those who should care about us. And yes, we spend time together because he treats me like a human being instead of a breeding tool."

Helena’s eyes widened. Tiffany made a small sound of shock.

"How dare you speak to me that way-" Helena started.

"How dare I?" I stepped closer. My wolf’s presence filled the room with enough power that even Helena, a beta, felt it. "You’re alive because of Lance. He risked his barely-healed hands to save your life despite what your son did to him. And now you’re sitting here, in the comfort of your home, using him to insult me?"

"I was merely pointing out-"

"You were being cruel." I looked around the room, taking in all of them. "You all are. You use people and throw them away when you’re done."

"Sophia," Damien’s voice carried alpha command. "Stop."

"No." I turned to face him. "I’m done stopping. I’m done being quiet. I’m done letting your family treat me like garbage while I smile and take it."

I looked back at Helena. "Lance saved your life. The least you could do is show some gratitude instead of using him to attack the woman who convinced him to help you in the first place."

Helena’s face had gone red. "You convinced him? So you admit you have influence over him. That sounds very intimate to me."

I laughed. "You really don’t understand, do you? Lance did the surgery because he’s a good man. Because he took an oath to save lives, even the lives of people whose sons tried to destroy him. He’s more honorable than anyone in this room, and you’re trying to twist that into something dirty."

"I think you should leave," Helena said coldly. "You’ve delivered George’s gift. Your presence is no longer required."

"Gladly."

I turned toward the door and walked out of the sitting room. In the hallway, I nearly collided with Simon.

He’d clearly just arrived. His jacket was still on. He had his car keys in his hand.

"Sophia? What-"

"Your mother is as vile as you are," I said, moving past him. "Congratulations on the family resemblance."

I didn’t wait for his response. I just kept walking till I got to my car. My hands were shaking so badly it took three tries to get the key in the ignition. 𝑓𝑟𝑒𝘦𝓌𝑒𝑏𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑒𝘭.𝒸𝘰𝑚

Only when I was driving away from Stewart Manor did I let the tears fall.

THIRD PERSON’S POV

Simon walked into the sitting room to find his mother looking.

"What happened?" Simon asked.

"That woman," Helena spat, "is absolutely insufferable. The disrespect! Speaking to me that way in my own home!"

"What did Sophia say?" Simon looked at Damien.

Damien’s jaw was tight. "She defended her friend. She pointed out that he saved Mother’s life despite what you did to him."

"It wasn’t personal," Simon muttered.

"It was cruel," Damien said quietly. His words surprised everyone, including himself

Helena’s eyes narrowed. "So you’re defending her now? After everything?"

"I’m stating facts." Damien stood up. He looked at Simon and pointed at the gift Sophia brought "This gift she brought is from my grand dad but it also carries the wishes of myself and my wife."

The word "wife" shocked everyone.

Tiffany’s face went pale. "Your wife?"

"Sophia is still my wife," Damien said. "Until the divorce is finalized, that’s her title."

Simon was shocked. This wasn’t the Damien they knew - the one who openly preferred Tiffany.

"Damien, darling," Helena said. "You don’t have to pretend for our sake. We all know your marriage is just a formality at this point. Tiffany here would make a wonderful Luna—"

Damien cut her off "I said what I said."

He walked out of the room without another word.

Tiffany bit her lip. "I don’t understand. He’s been so attentive lately. I thought-"

"Don’t worry, dear." Helena reached out and patted Tiffany’s hand. "Damien is just being diplomatic. He has to maintain appearances until the divorce is official. But you and I both know where his heart truly lies."

Simon nodded slowly. "Mother’s right. Once the divorce goes through, Damien will be free to make you his Luna officially. You’re perfect for him, Tiffany”

"But what if-"

"No what-ifs." Helena cut in. "We’ll make sure this divorce happens quickly. And when it does, you’ll be right there ready to step into your rightful place."

Tiffany smiled "You really think so?"

"I know so." Helena settled back into her pillows. "Simon, you’ll help, won’t you? Make sure there are no complications with the divorce proceedings?"

Simon smiled. This was something he could control, something he could fix. "Of course”

Tiffany’s smile grew wider, more confident. In her mind, she was already planning her future as Luna of Moonstone Pack.
