Chapter 39: Chapter 39 Destroying Him

SOPHIA’S POV

When I arrived at the hospital early the next morning there were whispers and some nurses were pointing fingers at me.

At first I thought news of the incident with Professor Rio had traveled.

But after I changed into my scrubs and walked into the operating room, some of the doctors stopped talking.

Someone stopped mid-sentence. I heard another whisper trail off. I looked up and caught a few people watching me, then quickly looking away.

My wolf felt uneasy inside me. She could sense tension. Something was wrong.

“Morning, Sophia,” one surgeon finally greeted me, forcing a smile.

“Morning,” I replied.

I told myself I was imagining things. I had consultations scheduled. I didn’t have time to worry about hospital gossip.

During morning rounds, I still had that strange feeling followed me. Nurses stood in small groups, whispering. When I approached, they fell silent.

One of them gave me a look filled with pity. Another avoided my eyes completely. My wolf became even more restless.

During a chart review, a young resident approached me hesitantly.

“Dr. Sophia,” she said quietly, “is it true about Dr. Chen?”

I started to panic when I heard those words.

“What about Dr. Chen?” I asked.

Before she could answer, a senior nurse grabbed her arm.

“We need you,” the nurse said, pulling her away.

The head nurse looked at me with sad eyes and said nothing.

Something was very wrong.

I checked the OR schedule on my tablet. My heart skipped. Lance’s name was gone. He was supposed to assist me with a lab consultation. His name had been replaced by another doctor. There was no explanation given for this. I was in shock.

What was going on?

“What?” I whispered.

I opened the hospital directory. Lance’s extension was still active. I stepped into an empty conference room and called his extension. It rang and rang.

No answer.

I tried his cell phone but it went straight to voicemail.

“Lance, it’s Sophia,” I said. “Call me back when you get this.”

I hung up, feeling my throat close up. Lance always answered, always.

Throughout the morning, I moved from patient to patient. I smiled when I needed to. I asked the right questions. But my thoughts kept drifting.

Where was Lance?

Between consultations, I checked my phone. Still, nothing.

At lunch, I went to the cafeteria, hoping to hear something. I stood near the counter when two residents at a nearby table spoke openly.

“Did you hear?” one said. “Dr. Chen was terminated this morning.”

My coffee cup froze halfway to my lips.

“Effective immediately,” the other replied. “Security escorted him out.”

My heart started pounding so hard it hurt.

Terminated? Lance?

I set the cup down and walked straight to HR.

The office was busy. I approached the receptionist calmly.

“I need information about Dr. Lance Chen,” I said.

Her expression closed instantly. “I’m sorry, Dr. Sophia. I can’t discuss personal matters.”

“He’s my colleague,” I said quietly. “What happened?”

The HR director stepped out of her office. She looked uncomfortable.

“Dr. Sophia,” she said, “Dr. Chen’s employment has been terminated.”

My eyes went wide with shock. I couldn’t believe it. I literally just saw him yesterday.

“Why?” I asked.

“The decision came from the board,” she replied. “That’s all I can tell you.”

The board? My mind raced. Lance was one of the best surgeons here. This made no sense.

I called Lance again. It went straight to voicemail.

“Lance,” I said. My voice was shaking now, “I heard what happened. Please call me. Are you okay?”

The rest of the afternoon passed in a blur. By four o’clock, I couldn’t stand it anymore. Fear gripped me deep in my chest. My wolf paced inside me. she was agitated now.

I changed out of my scrubs and left early. I took the stairwell to avoid questions.

As I walked down, I heard voices coming from below.

“I appreciate you handling this so efficiently,” a man said.

I froze. I recognized Dr. Peterson’s voice.

“When Alpha Stone makes a request,” Dr. Peterson replied, “we comply.”

My blood ran cold. Alpha Stone? That was Damien.

I stayed hidden, gripping the railing. I had a feeling this conversation might tell me why Lance was really fired. Did Damien have something to do with it?

“Damien wanted Chen gone immediately,” another voice said.

I recognized that voice. It sounded like one of Damien’s close friends; Simon.

“No severance. No references.”

“We complied,” Dr. Peterson said. “He was escorted out at eight.”

“Excellent,” Simon replied.

“Stone Industries funds a third of this hospital,” he continued coldly. “The board knows where loyalty lies.”

“We’ve contacted the other hospitals,” Simon added. “Chen won’t work anywhere we influence.”

“That seems extreme,” Dr. Peterson murmured.

Simon laughed. “Damien doesn’t do half-measures.”

That confirmed it. it really was Damien behind this.

Oh goddess.

I heard the sound of footsteps moving upward. I pressed against the wall, barely breathing as they passed.

When they were gone, my legs gave out. I sat on the stairs, shaking. Damien did this. He destroyed Lance’s career because of me.

Guilt crushed me. I felt anger deep inside my bones. My wolf whimpered. She knew how dangerous Damien’s power was.

I stood slowly and left through a side door. The sunlight felt too bright. I got into my car and locked the doors.

I sat there in silence, hands shaking, knowing one terrible truth.

Anyone close to me gets destroyed.

And Damien Stone made sure of it.
