766: Operation Arid Soil : Part Seventy-Seven

It was impressive just how many rats could hide inside of a single architecture, even without meaning to, Benerib just kept running into them left and right, turn a corner, there was one trying to sneak around, glance inside of a room, find a shivering shadow hiding underneath some piece of furniture, look up and find one who thought themselves smart by taking the high ground.

There were civilians of course, but also arm-bearers around, though, these were the sort that had gone to hide instead of fighting, in short, they were cowards and were quick to lose their nerves when confronted with a genuine killer. freēnovelkiss.com

As such, no one she had encountered within this holy temple had actually fought back much, and anyway, Benerib did not tend to discuss with soon-to-be corpses, most having been struck down before they could even react.

Like the arm-bearer on the ground before her right now, she had cut his face off before he could even gasp in surprise.

‘Mmh?

Someone triggered the vapour in that one…’ and thus, she began walking toward what she was sensing, quickly enough, the vapour that had been activated faded away, which wasn’t to surprising, although skilled in the most common manner of using the pale red vapour, without her presence to direct the corpse-puppet, it could only rely on itself, and considering the raw material that were the remains, it was like giving a beginner a fork to fight against a group of seasoned warriors.

Hooking the leaf curtain in the way, she flung it open, walking directly into the kitchen area, and only finding the hacked-up remains of the corpse puppet, instantly noticing that the nzappa zap axe that it had been holding before was missing.

‘I definitely sensed some watchful vapour’ Benerib looked around, pots that had been used to stock blood were still lying around, none of the leaf curtains leading out of the area were moving, so the odds that the roach roaming around had made a run for it seemed unlikely.

The kitchens were a rather large area, but a very open one, hiding there was not simple, spots one could squeeze themselves into to hope to not be seen were greatly limited, and she knew very well the one who had been here moments ago and defeated the puppet was a worshipper of Watchful Undeviginti, as such, illusions were out of the question, they had to be concealing themselves in simplistic manner.

‘Pretty good at covering their signature however…’ the heretic sighed loudly ‘…I have a feeling my original prey is close-by…’

She walked up to a cabinet, the kitchens were full of such pieces of furniture alongside closets and pantries, some even carved directly into the building itself, allowing for them to be situated off from the ground, as though growing directly from the walls.

The two sickles disappeared, leaving place to most simple spear, which she stabbed right the cabinet without even bothering to open it, the weapon made entirely out of energy punched holes right through the sandstone, one by one, she punctured every piece of furniture without care for what might be inside, whilst the hidden boy shivered in terror.

He had been swift, so quick in fact, that it almost felt like his body had acted on its own, unfortunately for him, his hijinks during his time at the solar temple had not included the creation of a great hiding spot in the kitchens, though, he did know the best spots as him and the other orphans had basically been doing nothing but play hide and seek all day, everyday.

And so, whilst carrying the baby, he had leapt up and crawled over the top of one of the rows of cabinets that protruded from the wall, being relatively high up and wide, by tucking himself right up against the wall into a corner, he was not visible unless someone was relatively tall, which was not the case for the mask woman, who continued to pierce everything, skewering food and blood supplies without a care in the world.

‘She’ll definitely find me soon enough… What can I do?’ his mind was racing with possibilities, but none seemed plausible, he could not run away from her, not only would he have to jump down before taking off, which would slow him down considerably, but if she wanted to catch up to him, she would be able to anyways, fighting seemed out of the question as well, that woman would tear him apart within seconds, his sword skills were nothing exceptional, his strength not that much better than average, and his vapour manipulation still considering as beginner.

In short, the best he could do was pray.

Keeping the baby against his chest, making sure that if the spear came piercing from below, that the infant would be less likely to be struck as well…

The sound of sandstone being pierced was constant, whether it got further or closer, it remained just as terrifying, but soon enough, the spear of red vapour became visible as it was thrust upward.

‘What are the odds… That she just completely misses me?’ he wondered, a cold sweat running along his spine as he watched the weapon draw closer and closer, deep down, he knew that she would not miss him, she was methodical, stabbing multiples per any possible hiding spot, covering enough ground to ensure that anything or anyone that might be there would be impaled.

‘Undeviginti, oh watchful one… Even if I must perish today, that is fine… Please, simply protect the child…’ carefully tucking the baby as far away as was possible, he prepared to roll off the side, if he had to die, he should at least make sure that it was during a fight.

‘Hopefully, she won’t bother to check for the baby’s presence…’ he moved.

“Vile heretic!

You dare trespass on holy ground?!” the boy froze as a booming voice erupted.

Benerib turned to look at the one who had just barged in, a middle-aged man dressed in robes that marked him as a worshipper of Prime Undeviginti, though they were torn and stained with blood.

‘No weapon?’

With a swing of his palm, the man launched a slash of prime vapour toward Benerib, which she evaded by moving to the side.

‘That’s one of the Ersta’sols!’ the boy rejoiced as the sanguine follower rushed the man down and kicked him out of the kitchen area entirely, taking the fight into the hallway.

The solar temple shook as the Prime Ersta’sol unleashed his power.

‘She’s done for!’ though genuinely believing it, the boy still picked the baby up and used this opportunity to slip away.
