With no time to worry about their enemy’s affiliation, Avery contacted the leaders of the other mercenary squads and moved into an interception formation with Ezra and Kaiden.

With the bulk of the merchant ships caught in a minefield, sticking close to protect them was going to be ineffective. The only way to prevent further damage was to engage with the fast-approaching enemy and take them down first.

"This is going to be one hell of a fight." Avery mumbled.

Even if they were older models, they were dealing with vessels once adopted by the military of a major power in this part of the galaxy. Each of them was going to be far more firepower than the average outlaw.

There were no jeering comments, or commands that came from the approaching enemies. They simply had their weapons charged and were waiting to get in range to annihilate their targets.

It was fairly obvious that these attackers were not pirates, but they also did not seem like trained military personnel either.

After seeing the way the Alliance Police conducted themselves during the large scale pirate raid, all Avery could think was that these individuals were sloppy. Their craft were not lined up in any sort of formation and were simply charging ahead and planning to use their firepower to overwhelm the Moonrise fleet.

"Their cruisers have locked onto us." Kasandra said, the Dauntless’ alarm alerting them to the weapons trained on them.

Large bore lasers cut through the space between them and appeared to be flying towards the Dauntless.

However, by a narrow margin, Avery avoided the powerful blasts thanks to the chaffs and decoy beacons that Jasmine had deployed just moments prior.

Right behind Avery were Ezra and Kaiden and following close behind were around eighty percent of the mercenaries that had been hired to protect the fleet.

Seeing that their opponents had longer range weapons with immense power, they all knew their best bet was to jump into the fray quickly and bring the battle up close and personal. It would be more difficult for the large and medium sized ships the enemy possessed to attack due to fear of hitting their comrades.

Avery was the first to enter close range, and dozens of cannons all aimed towards him to take him out.

Despite his best efforts, the Dauntless’ shields were dropping at a steady pace, but he was not going to be on the receiving end of fire without fighting back.

He aimed his three main laser cannons on one of the small vessels and pulled the trigger.

There was a bright flash, and his target took major damage to its shields, but that was all. These former military vessels were a lot tougher than any souped-up civilian ship.

Still, Avery was used to fighting in similar conditions to this in simulations, and his duel with Ezra had been tougher in his opinion. The people they were fighting right now had powerful vessels, but they hardly knew how to use them.

With fast and crazy maneuvers, he darted in between the large and medium sized vessels and continuously fired his plasma launcher to rapidly deplete their defenses. And when any smaller pursuit ships tried to flank him, he unleashed a punishing barrage from his stern scatterguns.

"Whoa! Looks like Ezra’s going a bit wild himself."

Avery watched as one of the enemy cruisers’ thrusters suddenly exploded after taking a direct hit from the Specter’s railgun. In terms of pure force, it beat every other weapon currently on the battlefield. Even the Dauntless’ plasma launchers were not quite as devastating with only a single shot.

Not to be outdone though, Avery pushed himself even harder.

At some point he could swear he heard someone screaming to his left, but other than information pertaining to the current battle, he tuned everything else out.

As the skirmish became more chaotic, some of the enemy craft broke away and headed towards the mostly defenseless cargo ships.

Their goal had never been to tangle with a bunch of mercenaries, but to eliminate the Moonrise merchant company.

The reaming guards that had stayed behind moved to engage, but they found it difficult to keep the larger military vessels from advancing.

"Guess, we’re going to their rescue. Kasandra inform the others and cover our escape." Avery said, swiftly turning the Dauntless around and gunning it towards the enemies threatening the merchants.

Obviously, the cruisers he had been kiting around turned their weapons on him the moment he tried to break away, but at the same time Ezra and Kaiden unleashed a barrage of attacks to cover for their leader as he went to the rescue of the ones paying them.

As they approached, Avery noticed the Dauntless’ shields getting dangerously low. Yet before he even needed to say anything, Kasandra used one of their shield cells to instantly restore their primary protection. She was a reliable partner as ever.

Getting into close range, Avery rapidly fired his plasma launchers and caused havoc within the enemy ranks.

He almost immediately became their primary target and gave the other mercenaries some breathing room.

Lasers and bullets streaked through space all around him, and the frequency of alarms signaling a hit became almost like a melody with how often it went off. Avery avoided what he could, but there was only so much he could do against so many hostile ships.

"Avery, I don’t mean to distract you, but we’re not going to last much longer like this." Kasandra said, her tone on edge.

She was doing what she could to assist him. Still, no matter how impeccable the Dauntless was, it had its limits and was close to reaching them.

"Don’t worry I’ve got this."

After flying around in a seemingly random pattern, Avery eventually came to a stop below one of the large enemy craft.

Several weapons tried to lock onto him and blow him to pieces, expect, not a single one could aim a shot at him.

Avery had systematically destroyed or damaged any weapon systems that would be able to hit him from this angle without first destroying the vessel he was hiding under.

Naturally the light cruiser attempted to move away, but Avery kept to it closely. It was impossible for the much large ship to outmaneuver him, especially since its prolusion systems had already received damage.

From his safe spot, Avery fired potshots at any craft that were in his line of sight. Causing major damage to them as they tried to reposition.

Soon they would have him back in range of their weapons and would be able to finally blow him away. Or that would have been the case if he was fighting alone.

"They really aren’t the brightest bunch. Devoting so much attention to one enemy when there are so many more around them." Avery said while exaggeratedly shaking his head.

Having regrouped, the other mercenary came in fast and laid down heavy fire on the enemy vessels one by one.

The concerted bombardment did major damage even to the largest and heavily shielded cruiser the enemy had deployed to eliminate the Moonrise cargo ships.

No longer the center of attention, Avery trained his plasma cannons on the craft he was hiding under and breached its hull with balls of white-hot plasma.

He dove down to avoid the ensuing explosion of the ship’s main generator and joined in with the other mercenaries in routing their opponents.
