Path to Becoming the Greatest Space Mercenary-Chapter 65 Everything Settled
Dorris and Ardesen looked uncomfortable as Avery brought up the investigation into him. Practically giving a silent confirmation that they knew about it.
"Yes, as Storren Corp. is an invested party, we do know about it due to the Alliance Police reaching out to us. Naturally, we were more than willing to assist them in any way as is expected by law. But so far as I know, it was not Storren Corp. that initiated the investigation, but A Deputy Chief Camila from what I remember." Dorris said, maintaining a neutral expression.
When he did not receive the signal for a lie from Kasandra, Avery turned towards her looking confused. But she merely shook her head. Dorris was telling them the truth without trying to hide anything.
’If Storren Corp. isn’t the one that used their influence to pressure the Alliance Police into heavily suspecting me as the culprit, then who did?’ Avery thought, baffled by this turn of events.
He had been convinced that this was a plot by Storren Corp. to have him connected to the murders that had occurred on the Dauntless before he found it. That would have him being arrested, and the vessel returned to them.
However, there was no one else he figured would have a good enough reason to do such a thing. He had hardly been a mercenary for very long. It was doubtful anyone with enough sway to influence the Alliance Police would have any reason to have him arrested for a crime he did not commit.
The only thing he could possibly convince was that this Deputy Chief Camila was at odds with Deputy Chief Ikla and wanted to humiliate him through Avery. After being hired by the Alliance police in the Yuson System twice, it would look poorly on the top officer if Avery was convicted of a serious crime.
Yet, this seemed like a very shallow reason and did not line up with the timing of the investigation. Jasmine had told Avery about it before he had been hired by the Alliance Police the first time.
With nothing else to go on, and a terrible headache coming on as he fruitlessly analyzed the issue, Avery decided to push it to the back of his mind for now. Nothing else had come of it so far, so he was not going to worry about something out of his control.
Yet, while he was considering who might benefit from having him arrested, Kasandra had carefully picked up on the wording that Dorris had used.
She also found it strange how willing these two top officers within Storren Corp. were to compromise if they had such a strong trump card up their sleeves. Not once had they even mentioned it during the negations when it might have been a powerful tool to convince Avery to part with his ship.
When Kasandra brought this up, Dorris attempted to maintain her composure, but Kasandra could hear her heart rate slightly accelerate. A likely sign that she was hiding something.
"Any investigation into Avery as the offender in this case has already been put to a stop. It’s not clear how it happened, but a bunch of evidence from the Alliance Police leaked, and it served as more than enough proof that you can’t be involved." Ardesen said, casually revealing the information Dorris had been hesitant to say.
Avery attempted to inquire more about this situation from the Storren Corp. duo, but they were lacking in information on the subject themselves.
They had been keeping up with any and all information pertaining to Avery, which is why they knew about the details of the case surrounding the Dauntless being leaked.
All they could give him were the sites where the information had first appeared. Anything else they were just as in the dark about.
’Wow, this is kind of a personal invasion of my privacy, but I guess if it helped to clear me.’ Avery thought, reading through the leaked information.
It detailed personal transmission logs, his whereabouts during and around when the crime originally occurred, records from his past and present ships, and several other bits of information to show that he had never left Yuson II nor had any contact with any criminal organizations before the SCXD-011 was stolen.
To try and convict him with all of this evidence now public would be foolhardy to say the least.
’Someone with the Alliance Police must have my back. Was it possibly Deputy Chief Ikla? He would have the authority to do something like this and he might feel he owes me since I helped out big time with the pirates and the energy lifeforms.’
Avery also considered that this might be Jasmine’s doing, but he hoped not. She was only a sergeant and leaking confidential case notes and evidence like this could see her in big trouble. She would lose her job at least.
They were just passing acquaintances after all, so he wanted to believe that she would not go out of her way to do something so reckless and end up in hot water because she tried to help him out.
"If that’s all, then we’ll be going. There is a lot of work that I need to get done thanks to the deals that we’ve made. It’s going to be a major pain convincing the other company heads." Dorris said as she stood up and began walking towards the exit.

"Ah, and make sure to get your ship ready. I’m going to come by with a crew soon so that we can analyze it." Ardesen said before he left.
Soon it was just Kasandra and Avery sitting alone.
The moment she was certain that no one was in the vicinity and might interrupt them, Kasandra threw her entire body onto Avery and gave him an intimate kiss on the cheek.
"I can’t tell if you unbelievable sweet or incredibly stupid." She said jokingly.
While she had agreed to it, she still could not believe he had dropped the equivalent of thirteen million Krenin on a new vessel for her. Plus, the two medium energy lifeform cores and a hundred of the small ones.
The craft that Storren Corp. was going to build for her was going to utterly outstrip what she had been previously flying. Honestly, she felt like she had been transported into some sort of fictional story where she had her own shining knight looking after her.
"It’s not that big of a deal. With another ship we will constitute a more powerful force and make more money. You’re a great copilot, but you deserve to be in control of your own ship again." Avery said bashfully as his cheeks flushed red.
Kasandra had still not let go of him, and he could feel her body up against his. Of course, he had no intention of telling her to stop.
"So, I take it that means you want me to stay with you for the long-haul."
"Yeah, you’re part of my crew and my lover. As long as you still want to be with me, then I want you around."
Hearing this, Kasandra’s smile bloomed into one so bright and dazzling that Avery could not look away.
"Then I think I’ll accept your proposal." Kasandra said mischievously.
She then moved with such swiftness that Avery could hardly believe it and left him behind in the room.
Completely flustered, he ran after her to try and clear things up, but the words got stuck in his throat as he did. It seemed that his partner in both work and life knew just how to keep him on his toes.
