Path to Becoming the Greatest Space Mercenary-Chapter 459 Mobilization
The Intrepid revealed part of its weapon systems once the enemy vessels had closed in and were at the edge of their pulse lasers’ range.
Immediately, bright flashes of light lit up the space between as over twenty beams streaked by the approaching ships.
"That certainly got their attention." Avery said, wearing a smirk.
Their current aggressors had undoubtably thought that Intrepid to be just a defenseless Ontembaar cargo vessel.
Yet now it had revealed itself to be equipped with deadly top-grade military armaments.
That would come to a shock to anybody, and the way that the more than forty hostile spacecraft slowed down and hastily started backing away was a sure sign that they were wary.
What was supposed to be an easy job where they used overwhelming power to intimidate their targets had just shifted into a potentially deadly battle if they continued.
The Intrepid had not even fully displayed all of its weapons, yet. Still, even just the pulse laser turrets that had popped out of their compartments were enough to give the enemy pause.
"Jasmine I’ll be leaving you in charge here. Try contacting them one more time and see if we can’t avoid hostilities here. I’d prefer not to engage in a battle here if we can help. Our mission is more important, and I don’t want to waste time or resources on this unless necessary. Of course, don’t hold back if they push the issue."
"Kasandra, let’s head to the hangar. We need to be ready to deploy if it does come down to a fight."
Avery got up from his chair and turned to leave with Kasandra coming along with him.
Before he got far though, Jasmine called out to him.
"Are you sure you aren’t going to need me to help you on the Dauntless?"
"For something like this, no. I’ll be fine. This will be a good chance for me to get a bit of practice in since I’ve mostly been stuck on the Intrepid for since we got it. Plus, there’s no one I feel more comfortable leaving the command of this vessel to than you." Avery replied.
Jasmine blushed a bit at the high praise that Avery had just given her.
"Got it. I’ll handle everything here. You two go out there and crush them."
With that, Avery and Kasandra rushed out to the bridge and towards the hangar.
The situation had not devolved into a full-on battle quite yet, but it could at any moment.
Things were like a powder keg with an open flame next to it. At any moment, a fight could break out.
While they were in one of the lifts being taken towards the hangar, the alarm sounding through the Intrepid changed. Going from level two to level one. Indicating that hostilities had finally broken out.
"Looks like we’re in for a bit of combat. I’m honestly a bit excited. All we’ve been doing for a while is beating up on pirates that can hardly defend themselves. This will be a good test of the Intrepid’s capabilities and how well all of us can fight alongside it against other warships." Kasandra said, her lips turned up in a vicious smile.
Avery could not help but agree with her.
While he had wanted to avoid a fight here since it would only slow them down, now that it was inevitable there was no reason to hold back.
They had done multiple exercises simulating attacks from dangerous enemies, but this would be their first real battle against a fleet of powerful vessels since obtaining the Intrepid.
When the two of them reached the hangar, they could see that most of the other small and medium ships had already left.
As soon as the level one alert had gone out, Ezra had led everyone who was already on standby in their vessels out to join the fight.
"There goes Liesel. Looks like were the last ones to arrive."
"Yep, so we need to get out there quick to make up for lost time. Otherwise, everyone else will take care of things before we even get to join in." Kasandra said before breaking off from Avery and rushing over to her own craft.
Being the owner of the Intrepid, Avery had made sure that the Dauntless was docked in the easiest to reach spot upon entering the hangar.
Within just a minute, he was sitting inside the Dauntless’ cockpit and ready to take off.
’It feels nice to have the controls in my hands again. I do enjoy commanding the Intrepid from the bridge, but this is what I really live for.’
Avery carefully lifted the Dauntless up and moved into the main passage of the hangar.
Once he was certain everything was good for him to go, he pushed the throttle on the thrusters and shot out of the hangar.
The moment that he got outside, the raging battle lit up his viewscreen.
With how many vessel were engaged with each other, the fight was extremely chaotic.
Fortunately, the enemy was already on the backfoot since they had underestimated the forces of Avery’s company.
Though the Intrepid had revealed itself to be more than meets the eye, they had thought that they could utilize their numbers to overwhelm the massive ship.
Unfortunately for them, the Intrepid was not just heavily armed but housed around four dozen other warships within it that had swarmed out like certain types of insects did when their hives were disturbed.
"I guess I’ll just go ahead and target the lead enemy craft. No point in prolonging this."
Avery wanted to crush their adversaries’ moral right from the start so that they could easily crush all of them.
What he wanted to most avoid was suffering any casualties here or having multiple of his team’s ships suffer heavy damage and need extensive repairs that would eat into their limited supplies.
"They finally noticed me." Avery said when the two hundred twenty meter long frigate firing from the back of the enemy formation locked onto the Dauntless.
He had been weaving through all of the other vessels to reach his target. Something that could not go unnoticed forever.
However, Avery did not feel an ounce of fear even as powerful multicannons roared to life and fired thousands of rounds at him. This was honestly nothing compared to the time he charged at an Alliance Police heavy cruiser alone.
