Path to Becoming the Greatest Space Mercenary-Chapter 455 Aberrant Space Monsters
Everyone’s eyes were glued to the images being displayed in the center of the room.
They were not all looking at the same one, as each of the space monsters had something different to draw one’s eyes to it.
For Avery’s part, he had locked his gaze on the one directly in front of him that had mostly charcoal colored skin with red stripes that looked like they coiled around its body.
From the displayed image he was unable to understand how big it was, but fortunately, there was a scale displayed in the corner.
’Those things are on average nine hundred meters long, three hundred-twenty wide, and one hundred forty tall. Damn they’re massive.’
It was fairly common for space monsters to be enormous creatures as it took specialized conditions to be able to survive in space, and creatures that were small simply did not have the mass needed for the complex bodily systems.
Still, these space monsters that had been dubbed Volmargar, (a name Avery would later learn came from a fictional beast from Tuuali’s home world), by Zefield’s team were on the large size even as space monsters went. Just three of them together would be around as large as the Intrepid.
Their large size was not the only thing that they had going for them either.
Apparently, they could propel themselves through the combustion of internal gas they stored in their bodies, and from out of several openings they could fire a liquid that when ignited was nearly as hot military grade plasma used in modern weaponry.
This made them very dangerous, as they could quickly burn through shielding and armor plating with a few direct hits.
If there was one thing that these monsters did not have going for them was that they were not particularly tough considering their size.
Most mutations worked well on them expect for explosive. Their combustible liquid projectiles could cause missiles and the like to detonate before impact, so it was recommended to bring them down with a barrage of lasers and multi-cannon fire.
"Those things certainly look nasty." Ezra said, staring at a different creature from Avery.
Hearing this from his second-in-command, Avery turned his attention towards what Ezra was talking about.
The space monster he was inspecting looked like the most unimpressive as they were diamonded shaped and had a metallic looking sheen around them
Surprisingly, their average size was only sixty meters long and five meters long.
Honestly, they looked more like some type of projectile rather than an actual living being.
However, their outer appearance was apparently just a shell that covered the true creature within.
From what Zefield’s team had observed from these things that they had been calling Hinvieners, they ate asteroids that were highly rich in metal ores and used those to create their unique crystalline shell structure.
This gave them a magnetic quality, which was how they propelled themselves around space in large groups.
When in combat, they would fling each other like projectiles and bore themselves into the hull of ships they hit. Eating away at and ravaging the insides of the vessels.
The worst part about them though was that their outer armor was reflective and ablative. Allowing them to absorb more weapons’ fire than one would expect for their size.
’Just these first two already look difficult to deal with. And I’m going to guess that the other three aren’t going to be any easier.’ Avery thought, moving his eyes over to the next creature.
This space monster’s main body was long and thick, but not very tall.
It also had massive fibrous wings that it apparently used to gather solar winds for momentum and to absorb energy from the system’s star.
Surprisingly, they could shoot some type of condensed laser attack from their many mouths. Which did not seem natural at all.
They had been given the name Fluem. An archaic word for shiny in the Vensian language. Something that Zefield’s lieutenant, Petris, had apparently muttered when they first encountered the creature, and the name ended up sticking.
With the ability to absorb a certain amount of light, laser attacks were not particularly effective against them, though there was a limit to what they could take and eventually they would be overwhelmed.
Avery thought that these things sounded a bit like Jallla’s and while nothing fully conclusive had been found yet, the data Zefield and his team had collected on their first visit to the system suggested that the two fairly different space monsters might have some genetic similarities that connected them.
The more he looked at each of the space monsters and read about their characteristics, the more Avery had a certain sinking feeling that something was not right here.
Still, since everyone was still busying themselves examining the displayed data, he checked out the remaining two as well.
First was a space monster that had thousands of spines protruding out of its body that it could shoot out of itself like shrapnel. And even once it was dead it was still dangerous. Upon dying all of the muscles that kept its spines in place relaxed and launched all at once. A last parting girt that might kill anyone that was still around.
This made long-range weapons the most useful against them as otherwise they would deal major damage when defeated.
Finally, the last space monster apparently did not have much if anything in the way of combat abilities.
Yet with their relatively small size, they zipped around the area and caused signal inference through the release of gases and electronic waves. Making them a major pain as their very presence made communications very difficult.
They were certainly an odd type of space monster, and if it were not for the other four types being present in the system, they would merely be seen as annoyance at best.
Except, with four very real threats around, having communication issues could potentially lead to fatalities.
Once a few minutes had passed and almost everyone had enough time to look over each of the monsters. Zefield spoke up again and drew everyone’s attention towards.
"I’m sure that some of you have already realized already. All of these creatures have something in common."
