Path to Becoming the Greatest Space Mercenary-Chapter 106 Attack on Phregon III
While Avery and Kaiden had no awareness of the significance of what Grito had just said, the expressions on Jasmine and Ezra’s faces were dead giveaways that they knew about whatever this Odium Syndicate was.
As for Sergeant Farash, he was noticeably displeased that Grito had revealed this bit of sensitive information to an uninvolved party.
"Is there something important I should know about this Odium Syndicate?" Avery whispered into Jasmine’s ear.
"Yeah, they’re an illegal organization that operates in the alliance’s third quadrant. I don’t know too much about them since they don’t have any influence around the Yuson System, but apparently, they bring in some highly addictive drugs from the Zatis Consortium."
Digging deep into his memories, Avery pictured the large star charts he had been forced to memorize when he was still a student and could vaguely recall the Zatis Consortium.
They were essentially a governing body of multiple corporations that controlled a vast amount of territory and shared a border with the Dramid Alliance.
The two powers had never really gotten along, as the Zatis Consortium was always trying to annex parts of alliance space as their own.
"I’d ask that you not share this information with anyone else" Sergeant Farash said, his tone disgruntled.
Obviously, it was best that information like this did not get out.

However, there was hardly any time to worry about this development before something far more pressing occurred.
Sirens started blaring throughout the station, and the previously composed police officers throughout the building became visibly panicked.
"Jasmine! What does this alarm mean?!"
Seeing the normally calm and collected police whipped up into a frenzy, Avery immediately sought out information on it from the best source he had.
"This is an alert for-"
Before Jasmine could finish explaining what was going on to Avery, a thunderous boom reached their ears, and a few seconds later, the entire building shook violently.
For all those that were no strangers to combat, it was clear what this was. Within the vicinity a large explosion had just gone off and caused untold damage to the colony.
Fortunately, it did not seem that the colony’s outer walls had been breached since the police station’s emergency shutters had not activated, but this was undoubtedly an unprecedented emergency.
"All of you! Head to the basement shelter!" Sergeant Farash said commandingly.
Looking at where he was pointing, Avery could see that civilian members of the station’s staff had formed a line and were hastily moving in a single direction.
Still, neither Avery nor any of his other companions moved to join those that were fleeing to safety. They were mercenaries. Conflict was their bread and butter. Hiding in safety while this incident was settled was not their style.
Immediately the four of them pulled out their terminals and stared searching for information.
"Seems that were dealing with some sort of coordinated terrorist attack." Kaiden said, pulling up news reports that were coming in by the second.
"The Mercenary Association already has several requests for protection jobs. It seems a lot of high-profile businesses involved with the planet in this system being terraformed are being attacked." Ezra said, having gone straight to the association sight.
While they did this, Avery brought up the colony’s map and marked the locations that were currently known to have turned into battlefields. If they were going to join the fight, they first needed to head back to the hangar that their ships were docked at and grab their gear.
Sergeant Farash futilely yelled at them to evacuate, before having to rush off to join his unit. There were so many incidents going on right now that practically every officer on the colony needed to be deployed.
"Okay. Let’s go meet up with Kasandra at the front and head out."

Taking the lead, Avery pushed his way through the throngs of people running around and headed towards the reception desk where Kasandra had been collecting the money for the bounties they had taken down.
When the four of them arrived in the room that was equally as bustling as where they had been before, they found Kasandra standing off in a corner with her right hand placed over her laser pistol.
"So, what’s the plan?"
Swiftly, Avery explained that they would head back to their vessels and gear up before heading out to take the closest high paying missions being offered by the Mercenary Association. They normally operated in space, fighting from their ships, but that did not mean they were not equipped to fight in person as well.
Crass though it may have been, a crisis like this had the potential to be worth a lot of money for skilled mercenaries.
Once they had plotted out the optimal route, Avery’s team left the police station and rushed back towards the hangar.
Along the way, they saw dozens of police vehicles flying around and heard the occasional explosion, but nothing was happening in their immediate vicinity.
Everything was going well, until Kaiden noticed the minor inconsistency that had subconsciously been bothering all of them.
Caught up in the rapidly developing situation, it was not until they had traveled a fair distance that Kaiden looked behind them and saw that their group had picked up a sixth member.
Instead of staying at the police station like he should have, Grito was trailing behind them. Having avoided detection up to this point thanks to his naturally small size and the haste with which everyone had been moving.
"Oi! What are you doing following us around?" Kaiden said, whipping around and glaring at the small Baccigan that had been tailing them.
Grito withered in front of such an intense look, and his body began visibly shaking in fear.
Still, despite how terrified he was of the Kaiden and the situation, he worked up the courage to say what was on his mind.
"I-if you all are mercenaries. You’ll rescue my uncle if I pay you, right?"
This sudden request came as a shock to Avery and his group. Certainly, they remembered Grito begging Sergeant Farash to do this, but they never expected to receive such an offer themselves.
Yet, as Avery was about to respond as leader of their squad, the sound of something whistling through the air caught his attention.
Naturally, Kaiden and Kasandra with their impeccable hearing heard it as well, and they both jumped into action.
Kaiden dashed forward and scooped Grito up while Kasandra turned towards the sound with her laser pistol at the ready.
Not a moment after Kaiden had grabbed Grito, a large capture net slammed into the ground where the unsuspecting Baccigan had been standing.
Kasandra was the first to start opening fire on the would-be kidnappers lying in wait on top of a nearby building.
Avery and Ezra quickly followed suit, and the three of them had the people after Grito pinned down.
"Okay, we’ll discus payment later. For now, were going back to our ships." Avery said, indicating for Ezra to take Grito as they made a break for it.
Disregarding caution for speed, their group of six ran towards the hangar while occasionally fighting off groups of armored individuals that were clearly after Grito.
Fortunately, they made it back to the hangar in one piece, and all of them first headed towards the Dauntless to discuss their next move.
